Title: AH Bulletin Board umlaut problem
Post by: Bizman on July 24, 2011, 02:33:30 AM
This is the closest forum by topic I could find to report this: For a couple of weeks now umlauted a and o have not shown properly. This is not only my problem, it has been documented to affect the whole Finnish AH community since July 16th. I suppose the same goes with the Swedes, Danes, Norwegians and Germans.

Or, dare I suppose, this is a conspiracy to force us to type in English also on our Squad Forums in case some Three Letter Organization wants to bypass the login passwords to spy our tactics in the next scenario?  :noid

Yep, it's about the dots. I just tested with the trema (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trema_%28diacritic%29) button on my keyboard, and it seems to affect all letters having double dots on them. Thus it affects even more languages, even English. Not to mention French, Turkish, Albanian... You name it.

thats strange, the forum and all the stuff behind it should be able to handle multiple character sets  :headscratch:

Looks like there's mismatch between doc charset (ISO-8859-1 aka Latin-1) and DB (UTF-8).

yeah I'd be looking at the char encoding in the MySQL tables, Ive had them change after reimporting tables and/or upgrading it. :old:

Already checked the encoding Holmes.  It is set to UTF8 and so is the board.  Not sure what happened yet.  Still trying to find the bug.

EDIT:  Ahhhhh.  It seems SMF has limited character set support for UTF8.  I'll need to switch it, which is going to require some effort as they do not have a tool to undo UTF8 support.  At least, not for the version we are running.

Ok, see if it works now folks.  A little hacking into the SMF source might do the trick.

that sounds like a bit of a PITA to do :(

I just rechecked a couple of my own databases and one of them still has tables mysqlimport decided by itself to convert from utf8_general to latin1_swedish :bhead

I appreciate the tip, it did point me in the right direction.

Why SMF would provide conversion to UTF8, but no function to revert is a bit puzzling.

Yes, I got bit my the conversion to latin1_swedish a while back on another database while migrating to a newer version of MySQL.  Thankfully it was a small database with several small tables (no need to do the "copy to tmp" thing).

Why SMF would provide conversion to UTF8, but no function to revert is a bit puzzling.

Because back conversion is lossy and also because all new HTML standards are based on unicode.

Thänks! It seems to wörk nöw! WTG  :salute

Long threads still have strange markings instead of umlauts in messages that have been typed during this episode, but it's a thing one can live with.
