The Macchi C.202 Folgore "THUNDERBOLT" went into service with the Regia Aeronautica in July 1941 and immediately proved to be an effective front line fighter. The Folgore first saw combat during the Siege of Malta on 29 or 30 September 1941 this first mission was intercepting British Hurricanes over Sicily. However the presence of the Folgores in Maltese skies was to last only until the end of November, when most of the unit was transferred to the deteriorating North Africa front. On 26 November 1941, during Operation Crusader, 19 Macchis of 9° Gruppo, 4° Stormo were sent to Africa, in response to the British offensive. During its initial combats over the Western Desert, the Folgore was quite a shock to British pilots fighting it in Hurricanes and P-40E Kittyhawks.
This setup represents the Folgore's debut in North Africa operating in support of Italy during Operation Crusader and their initial battles with the RAF's Desert Air Force.
This setup represents the general area and the victory conditions are not historical.
Objectives:
Allies:
Advance up the coast from Tripoli and destroy the city of Tunis.
Axis:
Advance down the coast from Tunis and destroy the city of Tripoli.
Victory will be determined Thursday night Aug 4th at Midnite EST and will be based on higher percentage of enemy city destroyed.
NOTE: Due to the fact only one city per side is targeted and the Axis has 3 country owned cities on this terrain as opposed to 1 for the allies, each percentage of the axis city destroyed will adjusted to 2.66%

Whoo hoo! more I-16! Been having too much fun in that little plane this week to not want more. :D
-
Early war North Africa......Excellent

Perhaps if the I-16 is a sub for the G.50, disable the 20mm options in the server settings?

Quite true Krusty. I meant to have no rockets and type 24 loadout only for the I-16 when I wrote the setup. It slipped my mind so thanks for the reminder.
Also you Buff drivers. The G4M is subbing for the SM-79 and has an Italian skin on this map. Remember to use it if you're Buffing for the Axis. :aok

Ah Yes, was planning to do this but forgot to put it in the write up.

Also Jim I had another misfire. It should be P-40B Tomahawks for the Allies not P-40E Kittyhawks. Trap caught that one.
Thanks Trap. Sorry guys my PC was down earlier this week and it played hell with getting anything done.
-
Ok, No problem.
-
Quick questions. Was the Sm-79 as flamable as the G4M, and what is it about the betty that makes it a suitable sub? (don't take this as a dig on the plane chosen as a sub, just a genuine question)
I-16 with 4 BB guns will make you work for the kill. awsome :D
-
Tmetal, it was a slow vulnerable early bomber with a light bombload.
The Betty is one of probably 2-3 planes in the game that COULD sub for it. The others are the Ju88 and the Boston III off the top of my head. I think they're both faster than the Betty as well.
-
thanks krusty :aok
-
No prob.
Turns out the boston III is some 80mph faster. Too fast for most planes in this setup to even catch.

Ju88 is closer, matching up to 8K but faster above that. It also doesn't look the part, and is ugly (old graphics, blech!)

So, betty is the best choice. Although it's probably better defended, the 20mm gun sucks horribly on it, so I guess it evens out.
-
Plus this terrain has a default skin for it.

-
yeah she is better defended, but seems much more delicate when you consider her fondness for cooking the crew over an open flame. Then again I fly the betty more often than I fly the Ju88 or the boston in the MA's and AvA. Maybe I should talk to a professional about my masochistic tendancies. :uhoh
Jimson - i normaly don't like the look of that particular Italian camo job, but it definately works for the G4M.
-
I think it's pretty cool that the SEA terrain team includes these substitute skins.
The Rangoon terrain has a Japanese 110c skin to use as a sub for the Ki45 I believe, and a Tabby skin for the C47.
The Japan terrain even has a Nakajima Kikka skin for the Me262, although you would really have to stretch into "what if?" territory for that one.
-
Since these are built into the terrain you really can't tell what the map will be used for in the future. I think they're just hedging their bets with the 262s and off-beat substitutes. You can only send the map to HTC to be compiled so many times.

If you squint you can imagine the glass dome nose is the third engine!
-
If I take my reading glasses off there's no squinting required.
-
Awesome! :aok

There is a bug with the new version that doesn't allow any weapon load outs to be disabled.
For now, the I-16 has been removed and the 109E has been added.
I'll change it back when there is a patch to fix this.
-
I don't see the 109 being a G.50 standin either, or is the idea that you're ditching the G.50 and just giving something else from the axis force of the time for variety's sake?
-
Just for now, until a patch fixes it so we can put the I-16 back in without 20mms and rockets.
-
I guess the real solution is.... well.....
Have HTC add the G.50!
Okay, okay.. I'm goin', I'm goin'! :bolt:
-
You got my vote.

Hey Jim,
Nice work...
But the AVA has the P-40B active only. The setup states P-40E. Turning on both is historically accurate I believe.
RAF, RAAF, and SAAF squadrons had the Tomahawk IIB and Kittyhawk I in late 1941.
Cheers...
-
Commonwealth squadrons did not operate the Kittyhawk until early 1942. I could find nothing about Kittyhawks being used in 1941 when I wrote this setup. If you have info on Kittyhawks in combat over Tobruk in November 1941 I will gladly change the setup.

Shifty,
I concede Sir, to my understanding the first action of the Kittyhawk I with commonwealth air forces was January 1st 1942 by No. 3 Squadron RAAF. They were deployed to the region in December but not in action until January.
:salute

Yeah it just missed this one was the best I could come up with too. Still it's kind of cool to give the Italian bird it's moment in the sun for a setup. ;)
-
Might be useful for the MOTD to note that planes are available at vehicle fields. I didn't know that the other night, looked at the proximity of air bases and was sad.

Really fun setup.
The Hurri1 turns out to be a beast, for once.. :D

Well, consider also that in the MTO the Hurr1s were flying often with naval gear onboard (Sea Hurricanes) and/or giant scoop filters under the nose, which severely impacted performance in a negative way. It's natural they should be a bit of a powerhouse in here.
They also roll too fast. The modelling needs revisiting :noid
Although, I think the I16 would give the Hurr a run for its money. Can't wait to try it out.
-
OK, I-16 is back in. No 20mm, no rockets. 109 has been removed.
-
Sweet. Now I jsut have to find time to get into this set up before it goes away. :headscratch:
-
Is there a default Italian skin for the I16 on this map?
-
Don't think so.
