Title: Went shooting today
Post by: Tupac on July 28, 2011, 06:58:30 PM
So, I love to shoot my .22 but I'm having trouble finding any decent ammo for it

Heres my group with some plinking remington subsonic ammo

I think I could get it much better with the use of better ammo

Also that is at 50 yards

I've never had any trouble with Remington ammo.

I've never tried Winchester ammo for a .22, but I always associate Winchester with the bigger caliber rifles. I tend to stay away from it for smaller barrels, then.

Your group is tight adjust your sights up 2 inches and to the left 2 inches lol

What I was shooting today is better than what I was shooting Tuesday. Maybe its just the idiot behidn the trigger. The target on the left is at 50 yards, and the big holes are with some reloaded 30/06 that I'm trying. The right is at 100 and it isnt any good

I shoot CCI Mini Mags with my Sig Sauer Mosquito.  They're a little more expensive, about $7 per 100rnd box, but they are better then any of the cheap stuff in my opinion.  If you want cheaper, around $20 per 500rnd, then I would suggest the Blazer ammo.  I've had pretty good luck with it too.

I've never liked Remington 22LR, it seems to be a lot "dirtier" then other brands.  Just my opinion.

.22's are always fun to shoot. Were you using a scope or open sights? I used to have a scope for mine, but I took it off when I went to shoot some guns the other day and I really like open sights for my .22 rifle. I also fired my 7.7mm Japanese rifle for the first time too. I was able to get all the rounds on target and that rifle was just way too fun to shoot. My friend also brought up an Italian rifle that fires 7.62 rounds. It has a short barrel and that thing was LOUD!

I'd have somebody else shoot the rifle, to see if the gun is shooting to the right or maybe you are pulling it to the right yourself.  If it is you pulling, then you might want to work on your trigger control to improve your shooting.

I have a surplus Russian Nagant that shoots 7.62x54.  You know it when it fires!   Thing is loud and kicks like a mule!   :D

Nah its not the trigger I've already got it nice and light. Not much pull either, so I know right where it goes bang. (or clink in the .22s case) It shoots in different places with different ammo, and it could have been the wind too.

In that case, try the CCI Mini Mags.

I love Nagants, I always try to find the 147 grain ammo if I can, the 174 stuff hurts. I brought my M39 to the range and let my friend shoot it. He couldnt hit the target, so it must have been the gun   so I loaded up 5 rounds and took aim at a sporting clay on the 200 yard birm, and busted it the second shot.

Either way, you've already mastered one shooting skill, blaming everything but the shooter.  :D  I've seen many a skilled excuse makers at the range.   :neener:

Second on the CCI mini mags.  Your groups are pretty tight, adjust the sights a little bit.  What gun are you shooting these with?

Also the .22 looks like its made out of cheap plastic, but its actually just dull stainless.

I don't know how much better of a group you'll get with higher quality ammo, but it certainly can't hurt.  A majority of hits seem to be within a 1 in group (on the center target).  I don't know if that "all weather" version is really designed for super-accurate shooter, but rather ruggedness.

Its got a bull barrel on it. One of my friends was getting 1/4" groups but he was usin on of those things that clamps the gun in place, but I dont have one of those

Tight group. Sights to adjust. I would guess you have a pretty smooth, consistent trigger pull or the group would be larger. My Dad would probably hassle that first though. He always does.

Boo

PS My Dad used to be ranked nationally for combat pistol shooting back in the day. He is too old for that at almost 80 but will still outshoot most people. Seeing that target brings back memories.

Mini mags are the best you can do for off the shelf .22LR and worth it. I'll buy Federal bulk packs to throw a lot of rounds through the AR-15 conversions/uppers.  Walther P22 will shoot either reliably as will my other plinkers. Remington thunderbolt is absolute garbage and I'm cursed with a few packs of it left over from when I had a pump .22 and it didn't matter. I don't have any bolt guns in .22 or I'd be rid of that garbage by now.

on the pic of the .22 I notice both your rings for your scope are in the same spot. Why is that? most of the time you see a ring aft of the breech and one forward.
Just wonderin myself. also what kind of scope are you using?

To shoot the 30/06 move up to reloading and honing custom ammo. Even bringing you 06 to a gunnie for some triggering and floating will help much. The thing is there is a store bought load your rifle will like for hunting purposes, but there is a handload that it will simply love. I could spend an hour making 10 perfect loads.  :salute

If you hit down to the right that many times, you are pulling or your scope is off. That is not the wind.
Title: Re: Went shooting today
Post by: 68Hawk on July 29, 2011, 11:28:42 AM
Spikes is correct.  Unless you have a constant wind going left to right, you probably need to re-zero your optic.

From your Tuesday targets, the one on the right looks like you're jerking the trigger.  The one on the left has that rightward grouping also.  Make sure your scope rings are nice and tight and use thread locker on them (the blue not the red).  Also check the focus on it.  Then confirm your zero from a good supported position.

If you were using iron sights I'd say that your eye focus might have something to do with it, but your are grouping nicely.  Keep with all your good fundamentals, sight picture and trigger press being the most important, and don't forget the follow through.  I bet once you get the scope adjusted properly you'll see those groups hit reliably at your point of aim.

Just a thought, but...

Unless you NEED to be more accurate, just buy the cheapest "name brand" ammo you can find and concentrate on shooting technique.  I used to buy blocks of remmington thunderbolt .22, and it shot just fine in my 10-22, good enough that I could see the results of good or bad technique in my groupings.

I also found that lightweight or high speed ammo was rarely more accurate than even the thunderbolt stuff, which is derided as "bad" ammo by some people.

My best advice is to try various inexpensive types before you try any sort of premium or specialty ammo like subsonic or ultra high-speed.  If you can't find decent results with the cheap stuff then try various extreme stuff like lightweight/fast, lightweight slow, heavyweight, etc.  But if you can't find a decent ammo that doesn't cost a lot, then chances are you are up against either a technique problem or a basic limitation of the gun.

My mini-14 is sort of like that...  The best ammo I found for it is anything with heavyweight bullets, the heavier the better.  But no matter what ammo I use and no matter who is shooting it (taking technique out of the equation), it still shoots no better than 3 inch groups at 100 yards, so I've found the limits of the gun.  If you can't find a good ammo and everyone gets the same results, then you may be at the limits of that gun.

It is disappointing to find that you are a more accurate shooter than your gun is capable of delivering, but throwing money at a gun that is already more accurate than you are is likewise frustrating.

Call me one of those "some people".  The Remington Thundrbolt is awful.  It shoots very dirty and has many more FTF per box then any other 22LR ammo I have ever used.  In the cheap category, I much prefer the Blazer 22LR or even the Federal American Eagle.

The Thunderbolt stuff seems to have a good quality bullet, but the primer is spotty and the powder is dirty.  The American Eagle shoots cleaner and is much more reliable, but the projectile is visibly not manufactured as well.  I like the Blazer the best of the cheap stuff.  The projectile manufacturing quality is consistanly good, they shoot pretty cleanly, and I have had very few FTF incidents.

I have all three ammo types in my inventory, so I am not simply talking out my butt cheeks, I really have used all of these.

The reason my scope is mounted like that is because I wanted the scope as far back as possible. It's got a leupold 9x3 scope on it

I have targets from far earlier then that. When I test perfect loads for a rifle I save the targets with the load info attached on a separate piece of paper attached to them. That way I dont forget the load or how it performs. Been shooting for almost 45 years.  :salute

I get alot of duds with Blazer ammo. Roughly around 5-6 per 50.  My favorite when I can find it is Winchester Wildcats. I hate CCI .22LR ammo because I have to clear more jams and duds than should ever happen in a semi-auto.

Scopes do not like to be suspended from a single mounting point. That adds additional stress to the scope tube and allows flexing, it is after all thin walled aluminum tubing. It is better if the scope is mounted at two spots that are not close together to give it a more stable position. Look for a mounting system that will place the scope where it needs to be to give you a full field of view and be fully supported.

Another thing, is that a rimfire scope? If it is not a rimfire scope that means the parallax setting is for 100+ yards and will give you fits at under 100 yards. That is important as parallax can change your point of impact just by changing your check weld on the rifle. Unless you align your eye in the exact same place to shoot the scope it will shift the group location. If you move during the group and then go back to finish it it will be worse. You can find decent moderately priced variable power scopes set for rimfire where the parallax is set for 50 to 100 yards.  Do NOT mess with the power setting until you get the rifle and scope dialed in. Cheaper scopes will change the point of impact as you change the scope power. Once you are set then you can do a repeatability test for the scope click settings. That is a more advanced practice than what you are ready for at this time.

Check the trigger for how much effort it takes to make the gun go bang. You want between 3 to 5.5 lbs trigger pull for a standard style field trigger. A custom target trigger can go into ounces of pull but you get that after you have become proficient at shooting.

Don't sweat the brand or velocity of ammo just yet. Practice first until you get consistent ROUND groups. When I say consistent, that means in the same position of the target for the same aiming point. Once you and the rifle are set then you can look for the exact ammo for precision. It may well turn out to be the cheapest stuff at Walmart. Rimfire rifles can be really strange about what ammo they really like.

For crying out loud!

Don't PULL the trigger. SQUEEZE it. Straight back.

I usually fire after along exhale. Know when your trigger breaks.

Is that without any adjustments to the scope?  If so, then I would say you found an ammo that your gun likes to eat.  I thought you would like the CCI, it's pretty good stuff for 22LR.

Scope adjustment was all you needed.  I can betcha that you'd shoot just as good of a group with your previous cheaper ammo.  That being said, the CCI is much cleaner which is well worth it for me.
