Apple now has more cash to spend than the United States government.
Latest figures from the US Treasury Department show that the country has an operating cash balance of $73.7bn (£45.3bn).
Apple's most recent financial results put its reserves at $76.4bn.

lol Obama has an iPad thats awesome, would make me want one if I wasn't happy with my android and its market :devil

in its reserves... what in the world fdo they need 76.4 billion in reserve for?

Apple has been sued by investors in the past for sitting on reserves like that instead of issuing dividends. I don't know if the lawsuits were successful or not, though looking at the current reserves I'd guess not.

apple stocks are currently ~400 dollars a share right now

apple have always kept large cash reserves which is a pretty conservative strategy, and rather unfashionable these days. it provides a large safety barrier and gives them an advantage when it comes to takeovers and acquisitions, especially in the last few years with the debt market problems. contrast that approach with the bulk of dotcoms which have $0 revenues, $0 assets and market caps of $10-100m ...

by "takeover and acquisitions" you mean buying out other companies? if so... thats a rather monopolistic move, and i am in the furthest corner away from that.
-
they buy technology (generally in the form of patents) and the vehicle for the tech is a company. also plenty of manufacturing investments to safeguard their supply chain. acquisitions are standard practice for even for SMEs.
-
is it actually in cash? gold? other company's stock? savings account?
semp
-
a mix of cash (instant access deposits) and short- and longterm securities, about an equal split iirc.
edit: they are carrying massive reserves even for apple atm, expect some MAJOR acquisitions sometime soon ... :headscratch:

Maybe they plan on buying the U.S goverment?

That's a very interesting prospect... how would that work?

I thought so.

They cut a deal with the goverment to use their reserve money to help pay off some of our debts in exchange for political saying on goverment activities? possibly have the goverment look the other way as apple moves to become a monopoly? or they could just do a deal that makes the president's strings be pulled by apple behind the curtains.
Ya never know :noid

if they pay off the ogvernment so they get a say on the doings behind closed doors in exchange for being a monoply, isnt that called corruption? I'm sure theres some going on now, but there are supposedly laws against it, arent there?

political corruption and monopolies are not worth the price the working class would pay.

They will probably pass a bill saying every house hold should have an apple device in it :rofl

I agree.
But it would be behind closed doors, the working class most likely wouldnt even know it was going on.
So basically we'd get shafted without even knowing it :(

i disagree, i do not wish to turn this into a political thread and voice my opinons, but in a nut shell i feel thats already happening, and if (God Forbid) Aplle should have say in the government by buying it out, it would only get worse.

$76bn is a very small drop in a $40tn ocean I'm afraid. And that's as political as I'm going to get.

Im looking forward to the day were more in a trekie world. Money is BS.
Doubt it will happen in my lifetime though.
If 10% were spent on exploration, and the abilty to do it, other then killing each other, we might colonize another planet.
Untill then, were just pawns.
