67 years ago 01.08.1944 began the Warsaw Uprising.
200 000 people were killed
The city was destroyed

I just had a long talk with my younger cousin-in-laws about this the other day. I asked them what they knew of their heritage and they threw out the stereotypical "horses charging tanks" propaganda. I hope the ensuing history lesson about never giving up sunk in.

The valiant people that tried to throw off the Nazi grip on their city,have the Russians to thank for losing the battle.Just a few miles from Warsaw there was a large amount of Russian forces.Stalin held them back so he could get rid of the democratic leaders and fighters,so Poland could easily be made a Russian satellite.
Tanks versus horses didn't happen.They fought dismounted.
The reason the Germans did so well with their "Blitzkrieg" was the fact they were the first to use close air support to their advantage.German tanks weren't that great,as France had better tanks,and more of them.The Germans had Stukas,and knew how to use them.
If the French would have launched an attack on Germany as soon as the Germans attacked Poland,now we have a war on two fronts,and Hitler found out later that isn't a good thing.

Check your history. France did Invade Germany while Germany was occupied on the Eastern Front. Check out "Sitskrieg" or "The Phony War".
France actually did invade Germany but only some small distance. The number 5 miles or 50 miles or something comes to mind. Then they just sat there until Germany returned from their campaign on the Eastern Front in May of 1940.

Your absolutley correct sir!The French didn't press the drive,I was watching an old WWII news reel film,and when asked by a reporter why a soldier wasn't firing at a enemy in plain view.he retorted,"oh no I wouldn't want to do that,he might fire back!".Sitzkrieg at it's best!
The Brits and the Belgians not stopping the so called Blitzkrieg caused the French to call it quits way too early.
Read a book called the Blitzkrieg Myth by John Mosier.Guderian wasn't the first to use Blitzkrieg tactics.A British officer named Fuller used it in a battle during WWI!Guderian improved it with close air support,and it worked against the defensive minded allied leaders.

Read a book (yeah I know, big surprise) back in college that was the diary of a Polish teenager who fought with the resistance in Warsaw and was there for the Uprising in 43 and the battle fought in 44, ending up a POW before he was 16. It's basically his diary from 39-45. A rather amazing book called:
"Dying we Live" by Julian Egeniusz Kulski.

Yes they did. And a big mistake they made by not going full force into Germany. Forty Divisions against one German Division (might be wrong on the number), the Allies would have taken half of Germany before Germany could get their army together in Poland and counter attack.
And it was 50 miles.

just remember it's always better to look back and say this shouldda been done this way, or that way. but in reality we were not there at the time and the info that we have now was not available at the time. it's like watching a horror movie and yelling at the girl not to go into the room.
I remember reading back in the 70's how europe wanted to avoid another war, so they gave in to germany's many demands. at the end it made things worst.

Close, Germany had 38 divisions on the western front in September 1939. [edit] and another 11 divisions in reserve behind the western front.
