Simply put. M-18.
Yes, we've joked around about it for what seems like forever, but now that we have a new Heavy German Tank, we need something to counter it.
The Nashorn is a good idea, but it wasn't specifically designed to counter the threat of Hitler's panzer divisions in WWII.
The M-18 was almost 35 mph faster (according to Wiki), 25-30 mph (according to various other sources). The armor of the M-18 was almost equal to that of the Nashorn (almost).
The Nashorn has it beat with the 88mm cannon, but the M-18 could be fitted with the 90mm or 105mm variant. (I have looked up site after site, I couldn't find any with any info about those variants or if they were even used in the war, although I know prototypes were built). The 76mm cannon, iirc can destroy a King Tiger. 115mm penetration at 1k is more than enough to enter a King Tiger at various areas (without factoring in deflection).
This is just a sort of spitballing thread, if you have any info on the cannon variants please feel free to discuss.
-
I think it is kinda silly to ask for a free unit that can relatively easily beat a 100 perk unit. I'd be like demanding free Meteor Mk IIIs to counter the Me262 and forgetting the effect it would have on everything else.
-
I thought it was mentioned somewhere that if the M-18 was added, it would definitely be perked.
-
where is bar?
-
The M18's gun would be almost identicle to the M4A3(76)'s. Picture a slightly tougher M8 with a 76mm gun.
Nashorn trades off the speed for vast quantities of firepower. Mounting a KwK 43 L'71, it would be the equal of anything in the game for guns.
The M18 would require a flanking manuver, which is more difficult than most who have never had to do one would think. M8 vs Panzer is as close a comparison as you can get. The M8 has difficulties killing a panzer with its 37mm at combat ranges, even when, compared to the thickness of armor being penetrated, the M8 has the more powerfull gun.
The nashorn, on the other hand, would have the capability to engage the King Tiger from the front at ranges of upto 1800yds or so. I'd say a perk price of 4 would be good, at least initially. Leave it at that for 2 tours, and then adjust depending on the usage in the second tour (the stats from the first tour will be skewed by the usage it will get just because its new).
Would need a large perk price in the Midwar arena (the Nashorn went into service in 1943).

where is bar?
well yesterday i was sleeping or getting it on with a hottie... today i ran out of cash so now im here :P
Jager a.k.a... ohh nevermind... The M-18's M1A1 IS the M4A3/76mm's gun. They are both M1A1 cannons.
Also flanking maneuvers are not hard to do in this game it just requires fire drawn elsewhere and a brain to accomplish. and dont try it in a valley
-
You're assuming the guy in the KingTiger isn't expierenced enough (and wary enough; in a King Tiger, if you're not overly cautious, you have a very rare brand of courage indeed) to watch his flanks, and that he doesn't have people screening him. Even when I'm in a Panzer, I check my sides before engaging a new target, or every 3 rounds if it takes longer than that to kill a tank. And a quartering shot likely won't be enough to kill or even wound a King Tiger.
Not saying that the M18 wouldn't be nice, and very usefull. Would love to have it in the game.... eventually. I'm just saying that the Nashorn better fits the title of the thread. While it likely wouldn't be as multipurpose, and outside of its narrow specialized skill of engaging enemy heavy tanks it would probably fare worse than the M18, theres no denying that for the specific task of hunting down King Tigers, the Nashorn is better equiped.

no im saying a flanking maneuver is easy to accomplish till you pull the trigger and give yourself away. getting near the side of a tank is not the only part of a flanking maneuver. you ever maneuver 5 T34s to the side of a tank battle and wipe the enemy line clean? :D
-
No, but I've manuvered a company's worth of panzers and M4's during a mission :neener:. We broke a personal base capture time record with that one IIRC. Something like 6 minutes from spawn-in to base capture.
But I'm talking more of an individual-friendly solution. Fact is some just don't have access to skilled players that are willing to help them out. Fortunatly I do, so its sort of a non issue (personally anyway), I just prefer the Nashorn to the M18 on a sentimental level. Hell, I even have a squadie that is willing, sometimes eager, to drive an M3 for my Panther or Tiger and spot targets/resupply me.
But can you just admit that, as an individual use weapon to destroy a KingTiger, the Nashorn is superior to the M18? It would please me ever so much to hear it.
-

I dont know what for. The M8 could knock that thing out from 1600 yards away. The M-18 would be an M8 with a M4/76 gun, thats it.
-
Tiger II already has counters, namely the Tiger II, Ju87, Fw190F-8 and probably anything that can lug a 500kg or 1000lb bomb, maybe even a 250kg or 500lb bomb.
-
Instead of "countering" the King Tiger via another tank, especially a JS-2 or other such thing, just approach the issue by going back down the spectrum. Dont make it an issue of "to be able to knock out the King", but rather adding another way to kill the King. :D
Here is what HTC is hopefully doing with regards to GV's, IMO:
Priority: Re-modeling the Panzer IV with F and H model 75mm guns available.
Secondary: Adding a British EW or MW tank such as the Cromwell (w/ choice of 6 Pdr and 75mm), or the Valentine (w/ choice of 2 Pdr or 6 Pdr); adding the StuG III and/or the Hetzer; adding the Su-100; adding in the SdKfz 251/9 (7.5cm infantry cannon, similar to LVT4 abilities), 251/22 (7.5 cm PaK40 L/46, same gun as Pzr IV H).
Tertiary: M10, M18, Type 97 Shinhoto Chi-Ha, Char-B1, Panzer III J, the M7 Priest or maybe the M4/105 (or better yet the Sexton w/ 25 Pdr). Somewhere in there I'd like to see a gv w/ a heavy mortar mounted and be able to be aimed in similar fashion to the naval guns (indirect fire).
-
If the M-18 were added, I could see a small park price being put on it, definitely could be added alongside the Nashorn. The M-18 would give GVers the Scoot and Shoot option of attack and the Nashorn would give the ability to overwhelm anything with its superior firepower.
I dont know what for. The M8 could knock that thing out from 1600 yards away. The M-18 would be an M8 with a M4/76 gun, thats it.
I hope you aren't saying the M8 could knock out the Tiger II. The M-18 would be faster than the M8 (depending on which information you have), more responsive, and the 76mm gun would give it a strong advantage over the M8, unlike the meager step that you describe. The M8 with the M4/76 gun isn't something you'd laugh at.
Karnak, I can't find any records, were the 90mm or 105mm built beyond the prototype stages? Everything I've found suggests that they were never developed enough before the war ended.

the 90mm M-18= M-36

the 90mm M-18= M-36
Wasn't the M-36 built on the M-10 chassis design?
-
Yes, BAR is wrong on that count, M36 = upgunned and uparmored M10, not an M18. Maybe he thought that it was an upgrade of the M18 because 18 X 2 = 36 :lol?
M18 was never upgraded if I remember things right.

You've got your answer to the king tiger in the t-34/85

Yeah, the T-34 is quick and it has a decent gun, but the moment a King Tiger, Panther or Tiger I gets a bead on it, it's history. It is no answer to the German tanks.
It could hold its own, but it can't excell in the role that the M-18, M-36 or Nashorn would.

I posted the stats on the M-18, Its 25mph cross country, so don't expect it to be anything fancy, M-18 was fitted with a few varities however the 76mm is all you will have, with the same ammunition as the M4A3(76) we have.
M10-
Crew 5
Combat weight 32.6 Tons
Max Speed cross country 20mph, Road 30mph
Armament: 3-inch gun M7 in Mount M5, .50 cal M2
Main gun ammunition: 54 rounds, 1,000 rounds .50cal
M62 APC muzzle velocity 2,600ft/sec penetration of 93mm at 500 yards @30 degrees
M93 HVAP muzzle velocity 3,400 ft/sec, pentration of 157mm at 500 yards @30 degrees
Armor: 57mm gun mantlet, 25mm Turret sides, 38mm UFH, 50mm LFH, 19mm upper hull side, 25mm lower hull side
M-18 specifications:
Crew: 5
Combat weight 20 tons
Max speed: cross country 25mph, road 50mph
Armament: M1A1 76mm in M62 combination mount + one .50cal
Muzzle Velocity: 2,600ft (M62 APC) 3,400ft (m93 HVAP)
Penetration: @500 yards @ 30 degrees 93mm (M62) 157mm (m93)
Armor: 13mm front, 13mm side, 13mm rear, 8mm top, 6mm floor
M-36 would be the choice, since we would get the M-10 and the M-36.
-
butcher... notice the cross country speed of the King Tiger? :aok its 4 mph. HTC uses road speeds not cross country <S>
the M18 would be rolling around at 50mph-60mph
-
How does getting the M18 give us the M10 and M36?
Yeah, the T-34 is quick and it has a decent gun, but the moment a King Tiger, Panther or Tiger I gets a bead on it, it's history. It is no answer to the German tanks.
It could hold its own, but it can't excell in the role that the M-18, M-36 or Nashorn would.
Exactly right. The T-34/85 was a stop-gap measure in response to the increasing ineffectiveness of the older 76.2mm guns. They chose the 85mm mostly because it was already in mass production, it was readily available, and because it had shown effective against all but the heaviest german tanks (at that time, they were Tiger I and the Panther, both of which can give a T-34 trouble when handled well).
The T-34/85 is by no means an 'answer' to the Tiger II. Its capable of killing them certinaly, but then again, so is every tank in the game, as is a halftrack. The Nashorn and the M-18 are both dedicated tank-destroyers. Both rely on different means to effectivly counter enemy tanks. While they aren't nessicarily any better than a T-34/85 overall, they do their specific job, engaging and dispatching enemy armor, more efficiently
-
Do not kid yourselves, the T34x was junk compared to a Panther, Tiger, or King Tiger. Yeah, the speed, sloped armor, and decent 85mm main gun helped, but it was the fact that the Soviets had ten T34's to every single German tank that saved the day for the Red Army. The German gunners could only reload so fast so all that needed to happen was one single T34 to get a flank shot or two within acceptable range and it was over. Move up the next 10 Soviet tanks and keep on moving forward.

You can't possible pitch the T34/85 against the M-18 or Nashorn for a few reasons. One the T34/85 was a medium tank, designed to break through and engage, where the Nashorn was designed as a tank hunter on defense from a hull down position miles away for range shots. The M-18 required to flank tanks using speed, and hoping in Aces high there isn't a Fokker DR1 around to put the turret out of position.
All 3 tanks have different roles in Aces high, and the strategies for them have to be used accordingly. Surely you wouldn't take an M4(75) up for a GV Base defense, where as you wouldn't spawn an M-18 to an enemy airfield while ords are up.
Sure you could, but it would result in massive 200 whine :)
-
I would love to see the M18 and Nashorn be free tanks. Mostly thats just because I would enjoy opening up a 40lb on a group of spawn campers.
Nashorn: spawn in, one-shot somebody, die
M18: spawn in, kill someone in 2-3 hits, die
-

The M-18 would maneuver to the flanks/rear, and be able to kill someone with one shot.
As good as the gun is, it would by no means be a stand-off weapon, like you're suggesting
-
Yeah, but even at 50mph, you probably won't evade heavy fire for very long. I figure a mad dash through the spawn, getting a side hit if there is one, but other than that just pumping shells at a single target you want dead.
Not picturing it as a stand off weapon at all.

jager, butch, dunno bout you guys but blowing through the enemy's flanks at high speed in an M8 or M-18 Lite is very effective and very deadly

I know you tried a few times against me, except I had the high grounds and hull down position :)

I feel a need to also point out that flanking doesn't have to be done in plain view, its ok to extend out past the view of your enemy and approach unseen.
I read a few posts where people clearly do not understand that concept.

Any bomber with F3 view.

OK, so V135 at its worst. You spawn in, turn the turret, fire, and then you explode. Thats it. end of story. period.
M18 (or M18 lite) can zip around, and get off a few rounds before being hit (and killed, given this thing's armor). Speed doesn't mean you won't get hit, it just means you go longer without being hit.

Let's use a bit of common sense here.
1 second: 1 shot.
6 seconds (or so): 2 shots
12seconds: 3 shots.
So...... Do you see where this is going? The longer you're alive, the longer you have to do damage. So with that being said, speed is very important.
-
Oh sure, if there's only a few campers then theres a decent possibility you'll be able to kill them all. But V135 and V85 are notorious for having campers skilled and plentiful.
A couple of camers? ok. 5-6? it starting to get a little sketchy. 7-8? odds are that one of those shells will hit you eventually.

And what is the chance that they'll all see you? You probably won't be the only guy out there, anyway. Flanking at camped bases isn't as hard as you make it out to be, if you are willing to put in a bit of extra time, you can do it with ease.

you basically just said it's logical to up a perk ride to a known heavy camp when you know even KT's wont last in that mess... real logical...
Listen every GV in this game has an advantage and disadvantage vs all the other GVs. some like the tigers have armor and firepower, others like the T34s and light vehicles use speed. Ther M-18 would use speed and most sane people wouldnt up anything perked into a large camp...
I know you tried a few times against me, except I had the high grounds and hull down position :)
yeah that wasnt the best day for my speed demons VS you :) thankfully i upped a panther later eh? :aok (also the way i got the perks for the panther was from my M3 in that valley from hell :ahand

I'm not a newb BAR, I know the basics of armor combat. I ought to after going on 7 years with Aces High.
I'm not saying that the M18 wouldn't be superior to many (even most) tanks as a camp breaker, I'm just saying that at a heavy camp, speed doesn't mean you don't die, it just means you avoid death for longer.

But it doesn't mean you're useless and doing nothing but dragging out the process, either.
-
I never said that. But some of the time, you'll do infinitly better with a nashorn than an M-18 because of the one-shot capabilty. Sometimes, thats all you have time for, and you certinaly can't do much worse with a Nashorn than with a hellcat.
-
well then why not both?
-
Which one first? Both would be entirely new vehicles, and HTC isn't in the habit of giving us two big additions at the same time.

pretty sure a turret on a chassis with similar armor thickness would be better than spawning in and being forced to slowly pivot the vehicle towards the spawn camper to kill them giving the enemy time to fire multiple rounds to your head :aok
hey jager also gimme shades for the last seven years because your earliest shade that i know of pops up only at LW tour 118 and that was only one GV sortie and this was in November 2009 and i show you as truly starting in December 2009 :aok while looking at your stats too... seems the average stats for a new player...

you lie jager and i'll call you out on it. i hate liars espacially poorly constructed ones when your sig shows what tour you started in
-
The nashron was actually highly manuverable. Depending on the spawn, you can easily just traverse the gun and pop a camper in the faces before you die.
B-17's is the earliest I remember, was some time back in 06 or 07, maybe very late '05. I was a numbers guy before that. I was a numbers guy before that, as at 9, you're not always the most intelegent. I believe I was tick-tock sometime after that, but I may be thinking of something else.

SU-100. It looks cool too.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SU-100
The SU-100 quickly proved itself to be among the best self-propelled anti-tank guns of World War II, able to penetrate 125 mm (4.9 in) of vertical armor from a range of 2,000 m (1.2 mi) and the sloped 85 mm (3.3 in) front armor of the German Panther from 1,500 m (0.93 mi).[citation needed] This was quite capable of defeating any German tank in service with the exception of the King Tiger, for which Soviet soldiers gave it the obscene nickname "Pizdets vsemu" ("uplifting end to anything").[1]

+1, but some more EW and MW stuff first.

I would hope they finish out Late War before adding anything else, with only a few dozen in EW + MW vs few hundred in LW I would hate to see a Hanger queen in the LWA.
-
For ground vehicles, which this thread is about, we're pretty well covered. Really the only major additions we're missing are the IS-2, the Jagdpanther, the (dare I say it?) M18, and MAYBE the M36 Slugger.
While we have but a single EW tank. We could do with an M3 stuart, Panzer III E, Panzer III J2, Crusader, Matilda, the BT-7, maybe the Pz 38(t), etc.

i remember B-17's but the irony either way is that in your signature you are still a liar. thank you for changing it afterward but tour 106 was still in 2008 when you "started" so please tell me im not intelligent when i call you out on a lie again. ill leave it at that. :aok

AH is falling behind...notice that the M18 is being added >.>

I heard the m-18 is 2 weeks out
-
The M18 would be cannon fodder as soon as it stops to fire. I bet HE would be able to bring it down.
It would simply be an up-gunned M8. It would be nice to have an actual "shoot-n-scoot" AFV, but in AH it would have a very narrow band of opportunity to perform. Alone or in small groups it would be near-worthless, imo. It'd have to be supported by tanks, it'd need wide open spaces to use its speed to obtain a flanking position, and it would have to be under friendly skies.
I say the Su-100 first. That is just me. :)
-
I'd be happy with anything that could kill that darn King Tiger thingy, im still hoping for the Jeep with the 75mm Recoilless :pray but i doubt that would happen, "Poor Little Feller, Ya art not do that to him" :salute to anyone brave enough to drive a jeep in the middle of a spawn war. :cry
-

If the spawn is insanely camped, I love upping a jeep to drive around. It's funny to see all the tanks trying to draw a bead on 1 little jeep flying around blasting away with a .50 Cal. I happened to track a Panther last tour because he didn't think the little bugger sitting behind him plinking away was any threat. Saw the track fall off, and drove away laughing. Great fun!
-
:lol i was actually driving a jeep earlier in the TT in the ndisles map, i wasnt as lucky though jager, i got a full frontal shot from a T34/85 HVAP at point blank.... :ahand oh well its what i get for spawncamping sooner 13 times in the AvA on free tank night, sorry man! :rofl

youre talking to the guy who just killed 9 tanks in a T34/76 in TT without getting shot :aok actually i had about 5-10 nice runs until i discoed each time

I would have thought there would be more players asking for an M-36 "Jackson" TD. It came into service in September 1944 and there were quite a few built (@1400). Outside of the M-26 Pershing it was the most powerfull AFV the US fielded in WW2 by virtue of its 90mm gun.
Im partial to model pics to examine shape, this is the upgunned M-10 version (M-36):

This is the version that was mounted on the M4 Shermans hull (M-36B1):
