Can you overclock your computer to much? If you do what will happen?

It will damage your cpu/mobo/ram/video card. so if you cant afford to replace it, dont push it as far as it will go. but if you have a decent aftermarket fan you can do some oc. how much depends on what cpu/mobo/ram you have. it all works together so if you oc your puter more than your ram/vc can handle then it may be worst. each cpu is different so some will oc more than others. but sometimes pushing it to their max is not really worth it since you wont use the extra "power".
oc is fairly easy if you have the right mobo. all the mobos i got, i got them just for their oc ability and ease of use. in other words, post what you have and somebody will tell you if it's possible.

Talking about amd systems, without any knowledge about the intel:
When i oc, i do it in small steps, about 100mhz on the cpu. If i go too far, it 100mhz wont damage my computer but there will be notable mistakes, freezes, program crashes etc. My phenomII 955 runs at 3.2 GHz by factory default, without any overvoltage i could push it up to 3.8. After that, overvoltage is needed to maintain the stability, but that means a LOT of extra energy consumption and my supercheap PSU cant handle that.
What i can say: be patient, dont try to push it up to the limit in 10 mins. Do it in small steps, only overvoltage if you have a very capable cooling/PSU. Its valid with the video card/ram/mobo too. Test your system after every step, if you see anomalies, let it be any small, step one back. Also check the temperatures at full throttle, i never let mine go over 50 celsius (not the cpu, chipset, gpu or RAM). In this case, you wont damage anything yet will get about 15-20% inprovement.

if its a newer processor and even some old ones, nothing will happen. but there's always the possibility you can damage your system. but it's like building a computer, first you are afraid, then find out it's not so hard after all.

< AMD phenom quad core at 2.9ghz I'm sure it can be cranked up more but no need its fast enough. I love my Nvidia GTS 450 aswell :p
