Title: This has bothered me for a few days..
Post by: Gary26 on August 06, 2011, 08:08:40 AM
Thursday night I was flying around(as a knight) and the Rooks were taking it to us good. People were doing the usual cries about ignoring the fight and not dropping what they were doing to rush to the aid of their fellow Knights. One guy made a comment about losing the war, to which I replied,"war is hell". Next thing you know im being asked if I had been to war, to which i replied no, but i dont have to be there to know its hell. Then I was told I was wrong and I had to be there to know it was hell. He had been a marine for 20 years and thats the way it was. Then others were kinda jumping in on me.(not to bad)

First off, I have nothing but TOTAL respect for ALL of our service men and women. To say that a person has to be there to know its hell, is kinda wrong. I am a fireman, so a know a small amount about personal sacrifice for the good of others. Does the layperson need to be a fireman to know that the inside of a house fire is a bad place? No. They just know.
My grandfather fought in WW2, my dad in Vietnam and my brother in the first gulf war.

Now for a bit more of my history on "war is hell". On October 14 2010, a local man, friend and future fireman was KIA in Afghanistan. Losing him, being part of the Honor Guard that saluted his procession as they brought him home from the airport and took him to his final resting place, in my eyes, makes me feel like war is hell.

Im not trying to take away anything from our vets. I only wish I could be half the man the Alec was at half my age. I am going to raise my son to remember those lost and what they did for our country.

With the one year mark for Lance Cpl Alec E. Catherwood just 2 short months away, I would like to share this video. In the group on the right, 2nd row from the back, on the far left you will see the back of my balding head, fighting(to no evail) to hold back my tears. Sitting with other Honor Guard  members from Stillman Fire, Byron Fire, local police, county police and Illinois State police. Politicians are up front, but nobody cares about them.

<S> To ALL veterans past, present and future.
RIP Alec. We will take it from here.

Gary, I am glad you are playing here.

This is a great game.  There are many peopleplaying, most of them are quiet and respectful.  There is a very small percentage that are vociferous with their insults.  They make so much noise you might think that they were the majority.  No.  The majority of the poor sportsmanship comes from a minority.

I'm guessing you have a clear view of what is right and what is wrong.  The sociopaths you encounter here do not have that clear view and demonstrate it daily.

If I may offer just one piece of advice.  Ignore them.  Their arguments are untenable and ignoring them will thwart their efforts to get attention.

Good post Gary & well put, if the truth was known a lot of the arm chair warriors here, personal "combat experiences" couldn't stand the light of day.

This is making me second guess chewing out a bishop last week.  I've already decided that I don't owe him an apology because he frequently tries to run up his score by using my squad as a distraction.  He especially likes to go to a base we're trying to take so he can camp 1 end of 1 runway and rack up some kills instead of helping us take the field.  When we're about 1 guy short of being able to pull off a capture this behavior makes me extremely frustrated.  I have also gone so far as to change countries in order to kill this individual in the past hand I haven't ruled out doing it in the future.

With all that being said.  I do realize that this is a game that can be played many ways and we all have a right to play it the way we want.  Even if it means changing countries to target one individual player for not being a team player.

Nah, and it doesn't matter who it is.  He has every right to do as he pleases just like the rest of us.
Different people will always want to do different things but this particular consistent behavior from 1 particular player is my biggest gripe when it comes to Aces High.

Well there is a good reason I have been in this game for so long. This game is full of people that respect the military. This game is rich with history. Not just joystick warriors. I have never let a few bad opinions get to ne, but thisone kinda stewed in my head for a bit. I will never pretend to understand the hardships of war, but having lost do to war I will forever respect the men and women that have to wage them.

I remember a vTard doing that before you guys got pushed out by the knights.  He saw we were rolling bases and then was just following us like a puppy with an M3...reluctant to do any dirty work.  I asked if he was part of the best base takers sqwad and he proudly said yes.  We all had a good laugh.  Was pretty funny.

It's a response to Robs off topic rant.

Guess you are saying my comment doesn't belong....much like others said your comment, "War is hell" didn't belong in your OP.

Isn't it funny how things go around like that?

He could have ignored people in game as well and never started a thread about people commenting on his remark being out of place.

Instead he did, then he commented about a remark I made being out of place.

Wheeee.

His brother got all effed up from it (only in his early 40's but you could swear hes in his in 90's). its rough.  :salute to all those serving past, present and future.

Robs comment may have been a little off topic, but seems to me he has made the decision not to pop off at the mouth to other players since you dont know what kind of cord you gonna strike.

I'll often comment on a conversation in a thread.  In this case Rob was discussing a player's behavior, grizz was speculating if it was butcher, and I was commenting to rob that I've seen his squadies do what he was describing.

I'm the one who got called out for my comment not fitting in...yet there was no comment on the conversation to begin with.

In a thread by a guy who was telling us about getting called out for a comment, I got called out for a comment by the guy who started the thread about getting called out.

Just found that funny.

Not to beat this into the ground but what you brought up my squaddies doing was the opposite of what I was complaining about.  Apparently my guys were taking bases where people wanted to sit and fight.

The bottom line is this:

You can report chat and you can report voice.  But there are very good reasons that we can't report 'Not listening to me'.

Gary, any combat vet I've ever talked to in many years of talking to vets, never wore it on his sleeve, or used it as a club to try and shut someone up.

Quite the contrary.  They are generally the most humble and respectful people I've ever known.  I have yet to meet one who would wish you to see combat just so you could understand it better.

I'd suggest whoever it was, probably wasn't a real combat vet.   Bill Mauldin, back in WW2 did a great Willie and Joe cartoon, where some really beat up vets are sitting down, looking dead tired.  Another soldier with his fists clinched, clean shaven and helmet cocked is strutting by.  I'll try and scan it later.

One of the combat guys comments something like this"  "That can't be no combat vet.  He's looking for a fight!"

Sounds like the guy you ran into.

Why wouldn't I have another comment after this.  You jumped on my comment asking where it fit in while ignoring the conversation I pointed out that spurred it.

This has nothing to do with showing how big I am.

Sorry someone took offense to your comment and it "bothered you for a few days".

Now you take offense to my comments.  Maybe you should wear your bunker gear when you log in.

It fits because toon war is hell and the vTargets are very serious about it. We must discuss the hypocrisy of his post so that the magnitude of toon war hell is properly portrayed.

how many players do you need to take a base?  you will bring something like 20 or 30 dive kill yourselves on the hangars, then take the base.  when your base taking "fights" end bad  is because you guys dont engage any fighters as they fly by you and go kill the goons.  I am not the only one who has noticed it.  we dont even bother getting alt or go around, we just fly right thru you because we know you wont engage.

I have upped many times when I see your noe's and rack up the kills knowing that if I get behind 1, nobody will help because you are busy killing buildings.  I am not the only one who has noticed that either, we actually laugh about it on local.  perhaps when you guys change the way you play, your frustration will go away, and we all could get more fights.

one last thing, we stopped upping when you guys have your noe's because we got bored.  we have 20 or 30 guys attacking a base and there's no fights.  all we do is get behind somebody shoot him, go to another shoot, it's so stupid that it's no fun.  when you guys actually start fighting "gloriously" is when the town and all the hangars are down.

so if you complain about somebody padding up score and racking up kills, we have lots of them on the knight side.

Gary as a vet I have to say that the guy who gave you hellis an idiot and should be not given another thought. I served in Desert Storm and did a tour in Iraq and as far as I am concerned you can say whatever you want. I mean after all it is a free country and that dufus should realize that he is serving to protect your right to say anything you want. For him to say you can't comment since you have never been there is like having an astronaut saying noone can comment on the immensness of space.
In my opinon he was probably a fobbit ( Person who lived and worked in the F.O.B.) and the only time he saw the wire was when he flew in to start his tour and flew out to end it.
You said nothing wrong so never give it another thought. ....
