Title: driver kills in tanks
Post by: Tank-Ace on August 12, 2011, 02:31:29 PM
My wish is that you can wound the driver without destroying the tank. The tank is immobilized but still functional. You still get to shoot back and (maybe) land your kills if the fight dies down and enemies move more than 6K away from you.

I agree.  I think the damage model or "list" could be about three times longer.  Right now, for damage we have: no engine, no left track, no right track, no turret, ... oh, and pintle gun destroyed.

I can imagine a list was compiled some time ago and those 5 items were the things that all imaginable damage lead to so that is where it sits.

Really, what else is relevant to AH combat though? What do I care if I lost my left armor skirt? It doesn't even stop 7.92's  :noid.

I think the "list" is ok, if we're going for the problems that those damaged parts will cause or result in, as you said.

But I can't count the number of times my driver is wounded by a shell from the side (that would likely pass clean through the tank, with very little risk of a catasrophic detonation of my ammunition) and end up in the tower because HTC decided that the driver is imperative to my tank being able to shoot.

You can have your driver kill the same time I get my track commander kill.

Imagine the hours and hours of coding Dale would have to do. Just him. Sitting in that office at 3 am with a single light on over his head as he pounds another cup of coffee and his hair all frizzly. Before you know it he starts adding clowncars with 75mm guns and warp drive to the bombers.

Bad idea -1

I understand the issues with adding more code to the damage model, it cant be easy or quick to do.  But like I said earlier, it is all based on 1 of 4 things: a damaged track, fully destroyed turret, a dead engine, ... ... .... or a fully destroyed tank.  There is no partial damage anywhere.  Is there not some damage that would allow the tank a reduced speed only (transmission damage?), or perhaps to destroy the hull MG only, or perhaps to jam the turret, or maybe destroy the main gun sight, or perhaps increase reload times due to having the loader move to the driver position because the driver was killed, etc etc etc.  Lots of options.

Since "Pilots" exist in other modeled vehicles, we should have them in tanks.

Pilot get's hit, he gets hurt or dies.

The commander would be the best option for the "pilot" then. Hes in command of the tank, hes the one directing it, the others are just following orders.

But unlike a plane, the tank isn't in danger of being destroyed as a direct result of a crew member being injured or killed. In a plane, if the pilot is killed, the plane crashes. In a tank, if the driver is killed, the tank continues what it was doing immediatly before the driver was killed.

Most any round that made it into the passenger compartment of a tank would have caused spalling which would likely have eviscerated everybody inside.

So what you're getting at is you want the tank commander to be able to be killed :headscratch:
Well, since we "are" the tank commander, you'd just tower out.

Wish granted!!! *applause*

You miss the point. The tank can continue to fight or opperate with as few as 1 crew member left. It won't do so very efficiently, but the fact of that matter is that it WILL continue to opperate.

GVs are completly different from planes most regards, and should be treated differently from planes. That means no "your driver is wounded, so we sent you back to the tower  :aok" BS.

Driver wounded: you can't move, same as an engine hit
Commander wounded: you revert to the old driver view, or to the turret view
Gunner or loader: unable to fire, same as damaged turret

You should have hit all of these crew members before its considered a "pilot kill" as in a plane.

Last time I checked this was his job, game design...

Is the Debate still up for the jeep with the 75mm recoilless? or did that get shut down?  :headscratch:
