Thanks for that, he was an extraordinary man. I was moved just watching that clip knowing what he'd done and his ultimate fate. I often wonder how he felt playing himself in the movie, 'To Hell and Back'. He must have known that no movie could possibly get across what it was like to be in combat. He must have felt an awful fraud even though he had nothing to prove.
Americans can be proud to have a man like that and we Irish too considering his background.

Thanks for that video. I drove my sister to a funeral in Tyler Tx. a few years ago, and seen a sign that said "home of Audie Murphy" on the way there. I informed her who he was.

THE CROSSES GROW ON ANZIO
Oh, gather 'round me, comrades; and
listen while I speak
Of a war, a war, a war where hell is
six feet deep.
Along the shore, the cannons roar. Oh
how can a soldier sleep?
The going's slow on Anzio. And hell is
six feet deep.
Praise be to God for this captured sod that
rich with blood does seep.
With yours and mine, like butchered
swine's; and hell is six feet deep.
That death awaits there's no debate;
no triumph will we reap.
The crosses grow on Anzio, where hell is
six feet deep.
. . . Audie Murphy, 1948

Speaking of Audie Murphy, there's a little park out in Georgetown, called Berry Springs, and he was very close relatives with the people who used to own it (I think he was their grandson?.)
-
I was fortunate enough to serve as President of the Ft. Riley Chapter of the Sergeant Audie Murphy Club. It was an honor to be a part of a great organization of NCO's and the opportunity to honor such a great American. Sadly a plane crash ended the life of this hero way too early in his life, Salute.
-
He ended his military time as an officer in the 141Inf Texas National Guard.

just watched "To Hell and back"
had to have been hard to relive that.

Audie Murphy demanded that "To Hell and Back" be toned down considerably, and many of his exploits were either minimized, or removed all together. The reason for this was that Audie Murphy himself believed that no one would believe everything that actually happened, the way it happened. Rather than be accused of exaggeration or self aggrandizing, he chose to water down his own story in the movie, lest it be considered over hyped fiction, instead of the truth. He wanted the story told and believed, as much for those who fought beside him and fell as for anything else.

No thanks.
Columbia Pictures was going to remake "The War Lover" that starred Steve McQueen....glad they didn't. Should be required viewing for all bomber pilots in game, lol

No thanks.

:salute Audie Murphy
:pray for the other families involved in the crash.

Have you seen anything "Hollywood" has done lately?
Have you seen the quality of their "remakes"?
Is that the sort of thing you want to see done to the Audie Murphy story?

-
I really like the one starring Audie Murphy. Not sure what more technology could add.
