Daughter comes to me complaining her laptop keeps freezing and then the screen starts gradually changing color to near whiteout..
when she brought it in I see she had a regestry mechanic popup on her screen that I know I didnt install and she claims she didnt.
thinking she might have some sort of bug or maleware I tried restarting in safe mode but with the same results. and couldnt even get safe mode to start before locking up and the screen changing
Im thinking maybe heat related? As while we got her a chill mat she admitted she doesnt often use it yet over the summer she is constantly on it. And I do mean constantly.
Opened up the inside and saw no dust or other nasties I would normally relate to heat and found nothing
thoughts? before I run this thing to best buy.
I dont know for laptops

Sounds like its dying. Laptops can overheat nastily if they're not ventilated well and typically with some vibration added, this leads to solderings breaking off. Most components are surface soldered so you don't even see anything is wrong. Some people have rescued busted motherboards like this by cooking it in the oven for some time.
The solder used in the surface solder joints melts enough to reconnect the components. But this method is a hit and miss, some people overcooked and had their components drop off instead of reattached ;)
I have a busted macbook pro with almost similar problem (display died totally) which I'm going to try to rescue using a hot air gun.

I know a guy who fixes dead motherboards with a hot air gun. He preheats the mobo to about 100 to 150 degrees centigrade to avoid cracking due to too large temperature differences.

Dropped it off as Best buy where we got it. Fortunately its still under manufacturer warranty which runs out in Dec. Soo if it was gonna cr@p out. Nows about the best time to do it.
Told me it will be back in about 3 weeks.
Daughters learning a hard lesson from this. I've been trying to tell her to use the chill mat cause these things werent meant to run continuously for as long as she runs them.
Damn kids always have to learn the hard way

Got the laptop back already.
They replaced both the monitor and the keyboard (D key was missing)
Turned out it was still under warranty and free of charge
