Hi all!
I'm going to start building my first model airplane, it's a B-17F Flying Fortress. Was just wondering if anyone could give any tips to a beginner. Like what kind of paint to use?
Thanks!

Buy some future floor polish immediately. Use it to get a good finish on all of your clear parts, , particularly canopies.

I also recomend the use of Future. It's a must for clear parts, also a great clear glosscoat.
Its mow sold under the name Pledge: with Future Shine

Thanks Devil, Great looking model. Good job! :aok

Get yourself a nice Binks air gun (airbrush) :aok

talk to Jherne if you can. His work is AMAZING :O

Depends of the scale of your B-17 - but if its 1/72 or above and if its your very first kit, I'd suggest getting something smaller to try first - something simple like a 1/72 spitfire or mustang so you can get a bit of an idea

i dont really build model airplanes that much, but i do build lots of model cars/tanks. my favorite model would be my M26 Pershing tank model ive made. (my favorite model planes) one airplane model ive made is a F4-Phantom out of metal only. the current one im working on right now is a 1971 dodge charger. :rock

:rofl I did that to my poor corsair

When gluing canopy and clear parts *after dipping/drying in future for the clarity) use elmer's white glue and a toothpick to glue the clear parts on. The glue will dry clear, but not gunk it on thick. If you use otehr glues, the clear parts will craze and get futz'd up.
I'd start with something easier than a b17 for your first attempt, because even if it's 1/72nd scale it's a decent size and brush painting for large areas is... meh... consider getting a few cans of testor's spray (they do make them in military colors.) You can get away with brush painting 1/72 fighters... depending. 1/48 and up only spray (can or airbrush) can do it justice. You will still do a lot of brush painting of cockpits, interiors, engines, fiddly bits...
There are a ton of modeling sites out there... I like these:
http://www.modelingmadness.com/
http://www.hyperscale.com/
http://www.scalemodelindex.com/
http://www.aircraftresourcecenter.com/
not to mention all the actual warbird sites to use as reference/research.
have fun.

Thanks for all the tips guys, All I have to do is go out and get the paint. Also, do you all think that spray-paint would be OK for painting it?
-
Spray paint will do just fine for the exterior of the aircraft. Testors makes small spray cans in military colors under their Model Master line. Note that spray paint goes on fairly heavy, so do light coats to build up color to preserve detail. Also, make sure you use primer. Another tip, submerge the can in warm water for 5 min before painting. This will make the paint flow easier and more consistant from the can.

Get yourself some real fine sandpaper to clean up your glue seems and small painting problems.
I built an eduard 190a5 awhile ago but the fit wasnt great and I think I was rushing it which didnt help. So there it sits <G> This was the last thing I finished and it was probably over a year ago now. I really oughta pick something off the shelf and get busy.

hey pipz....something that just hit me...........where you've got that on a dowel,,,,,,,,go to a hobby shop, and pick up a clear rod. would blend a bit better for ya. :aok

Well I've just back to it so nearly a beginner again. Right now I'm building this: It's a Bristol Fighter made by Wingnuts Wings of New Zealand, 1/32 scale.

Not my model, I should add. I'm still waiting for the right paints to arrive from England. No model shops around here.
It's beautifully made and detailed. I hope I can do it justice.

Thats not a bad idea for future projects. That one there is actually suppose to be like that. I wanted it to look like a gate guard scene. Thats why I have the JG26 emblem at the bottom, the grass and the Obrst standing there. Henchman had given me the kit as a Christmas gift. I needed to find a way of using the figure that came with the kit and thats what I came up with.

http://www.ipmsusa.org/ is another fine modellers site.

We built a Bismark and then sank it via fireworks in our pool :D :rock

Hi guys, Jeff here IPMS #31180. It is cool to see all the model pics. I just got done with a superbug in a real mans scale 1/72nd. Here is a great pics website airliners.net . Anyway, have been building since I was 13, ran shows, went to the nationals and have a great club here in Kansas City. Just google my name if you want to see some of my stuff. Jeff Bobela. Getting ready to work a me-109 late war. :airplane:

My eyesight has gone downhill so I haven't done models in about 6 years. Here's two of the last ones I built and the quality was so poor compared to what I could once do because of my eyesight I gave it up. A 78th FG P-51D and Heinz Bär's FW-190 while he was with JG-1. The photos are not very good I took them with and old Dollar store disposable camera.

lol, I have blown some stuff up when I was a kid that I wish I never did now.
-
Loved building the kits as a kid, but never got the hang of good paint jobs. Doing camo work for one thing. I might get back into it, but really, I need to get back into AH first. :)

I started on the model, I painted most of the fuselage with some olive spray paint. So far so good. It's amazing how much detail goes into these models. Also, I would like to thanks everyone who put pictures of their models, they look great and thanks again for the tips! :aok
