Title: Why did you choose your squad name?
Post by: perdue3 on September 08, 2011, 04:37:26 PM
I thought it would be interesting to understand some of the squad names in game and why they were chosen. IF you are a historical squad, why that squad? If you made something clever up, how did it come about? Were you impaired when you thought of it? Out of spite? Let's hear it! (Long version necessary)

Our squad was initially The Instigators for our penchant to needle our former squadmates and the common goal of stopping base takers.  We're not a serious squad, so a stupid name works for us.  I was going to name the squad Pudding People, but not many would get the obscure Spinal Tap reference.  Muffintops is befitting because if I don't stop loafing, I may soon become one.   :uhoh

Kommando Nowonty was the first fighter Jet squadron.

VF-17 Jolly Rogers were a corsiar squadron in the Pacific.  I joined because I was interested in naval aviation, and the squad was pretty much everybody that I flew with when we had the 49th Fighter Group.

Semp if you had been quicker, we would have had to settle for our second choice: "69th P-51 ACEDOGGG KILLAZ"

edit due to over abundance of commas.

80th FS Headhunters were one of the premiere P38 squadrons in the PTO.   Back in Airwarrior the squad I helped start with mir was the Nomads.  They'd somewhat run their course when AH started.  During an Airwarrior Scenario I was GL for a PTO 38 group and chose the 80th Headhunters for that.  Del ended up GLing most of the scenario for the Headhunters as I had to bow out for some long forgotten reason.

That's where the interest in their history started.  When it came time to get an AH squad going, it made more sense to me to go with the 80th Headhunters then to try and revive the Nomads.  Because of the scenario connection from Airwarrior the 80th was still a tip of the cap to the Nomads, but allowed for a different 'identity' in AH.  Since we're still 38 dweebs it made perfect sense :)

I researched various bomb groups before coming across a name I liked. The 91st Bomb Group, "The Ragged Irregulars", is something that grew on me as I presented this idea to the community. I read up on the general history of this group and decided the name would fit for those dedicated bomber nerds like myself who have a love for the tough-as-nails B17 Flying Fortress. In Aces High, it's been a great thrill to pit a mass-formation of 91st B17's (preferably escorted :D ), against some of the most formidable opposition put forth from both the Rooks & Knights. I hope that soon I can get back in the saddle and revive that fun again.

If I was in a squad it would be 781st Heavens Krewsaders.

81st Krewsaders was my first squad and first squad I leaded.

777th was my 2nd biggest squad and 2nd squad I leaded through 30,000 feet, 3 hour long air raids.

The Claim Jumpers
Because we take bases and believe the world (map) is ours for the taking!
Most of us like the challenge of base captures by air or ground.

I started a small squad of equals to have someone to wing with.  The Wingmen seemed to fit perfectly.  We reached seven members at our peak and flew nothing but fighter sorties with an occasional attack sortie thrown in.  When we were online together and weren't off doing out own thing we rotated who would call and lead our missions and what and where we'd fly and we flew every type of fighter aircraft.  It's hard to have a historic context when you're switching between German, English, Japanese, Russian, Italian and American aircraft for each sortie but it's a lot of fun.

While we all had recruiting capabilites none of us were ever really recruiters so the squad eventually petered out but I still fly under the name to remember the good times we had and to keep from being invited into other squads.  I keep thinking about a revival but I'm on so little I don't think I could pull it off or keep it going so I'm now a one man wingman.

Growing up a miltary aviation history buff (like most of us here) I enjoyed reading about the exploits of Dick Bong in his P-38 in the south pacific. So when I finally decided to go out on my own ...the 49th seemed like a logical squad name

from the Urban dictionary, pretty much sums it up
Quote
From the traditional Australian expression: "Don't come the raw prawn!" or "Don't come the raw prawn with me!", meaning: "Don't try to put one over me!" or "Don't treat me like a fool!".
Particularly used to indicate that the listener is aware of the speaker's ingenuousness, for example where the person to whom it's directed feigns innocence or naivety.
Etymology:
Some sources say it is a WWII Australian Army expression. As to why it arose: one suggestion is that the reason lies in cooked prawn being more palatable than raw prawn. However, anyone from a fishing background who has handled raw prawn flesh, will know that it is limp, wet and slippery; like the sort of people at whom this phrase is directed.
Manager: "I'm sorry, Dave, management has reviewed our operational requirements and found that your position cannot be justified financially".
Employee: "Don't you bloody come the raw prawn with me. I know it's you who wanted me out. At least have the guts to tell me to my face".

I wanted "spanish inquisition" because nobody expects me to show up where I eventually show up.........like tanking the strats from 3 sectors out or driving GV's to fields that have no spawns nearby.

Sadly, longer names get truncated so I went with "twilight zone" which still explains the nature of my missions.

I'll eventually join a squad but I'm pretty new and still exploring the extreme corners of the sim which doesn't really help any squads.

I remember you drove a tank for 2 hours to get to the strats, it took me 5 minutes to kill ya :)

Well to expand a little on the VF-17 name...I started the squadron in September of 2002 here in AH after my previous squadron closed up shop. That one was LJK and we had moved over from FA in late 2000/early 2001. I have always been a Corsair nut and didn't want to get stuck in the VMF rut by starting another VMF squadron in AH. At that time in the early days it seemed like everywhere I looked there were VMF units but only one other VF unit was around back then.

So I started VF-17 based on the historical squadron and its been going since then. I ran it from inception until 2006 and then I retired and its been through the wringer with different CO's and guys stepping up to not let the squadron disappear from the rolls in AH. Although I can bet that someone would have revived it eventually. Anyway that is the brief history behind it from my perspective and honestly this group that currently flies in VF-17 is probably the best group I have been associated with aside from the first group that joined up in the first few months I had the doors open. <S> to all past and present members of VF-17; thanks for being a part of this squadron for 9 years now.

That's part of the risks involved with that kind of mission.

I sit outside the range for flashing the strats until high buffs attack them which causes the flashing and all enemy to be climbing after buffs.

I usually use all my rockets and most of my shells to destroy the buildings and then drive just outside of the city flash limit and kill the train that supplies the factories I just shelled/rocketed a few times after that.

Most of the time, the enemy never knows I had been there unless they notice that one of the strats is near below 30% and stays there for a long period of time.

I used to do those types of missions all the time.

Once on the old Pizza map (you've never seen it) I had several kills and damage I wanted to land but as I rolled to my nearest base a sector and a half away it was captured.  Then the next one then the next one and so forth.  After 5 hours of driving all he bases I could get to were captured and I was finally captured in enemy territory.

I also once went on an eight hour PT boat ride.  I had damage on several factories and three kills along the way before I finally connected with a friendly task force and landed successfully.

On my three sector trips to target peolpe would fly over and ask if I was nuts.  Nope.  Just taking the scenic route.
