American and Japanese carrier forces battle for control of Guadalcanal!

Overview
Anyone looking for historically based flying is welcome to join the fun.  There is no registration, but if you are interested, a reply here would be help us to better plan the missions.

The goal of each team is to control more bases than the other team by the end of the campaign. Whichever team scores the most points will advance one base towards the enemy as shown on the map.

For complete setup details, click here (http://www.78th.org/assets/aceshigh/sso/1109-Guadalcanal.pdf) (pdf).

When & Where
Frames will be run on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday in the Custom Arenas, starting at 7:30 Eastern and running for one hour.

A Sunday morning Avenger head count indicates we will have five pilots for the SSO, we would prefer to fly Allied as a squad but will split up as necessary to help achieve a good balance.

No problem if all you can fly is Sunday.  Would moving it back 1/2 hour make any difference?  Or do those days just not work for you?

That's gread OldBull.  Since your squad would be the core of the Allied team, would your squad be willing to lead the Allied effort as well?

Allied AAR Guadalcanal 09-15

Kudos to Lt. Shadowfox for finding and setting fire to the Japanese CV, then later upping in a CV anti aircraft gun in time to down three enemy aircraft attacking our CV; great work!  Capt. Raptor and Myself escorted Maj. OldBull and Lt. Chemdawg to enemy base A9, where they managed to do damage to some structures, with their B-25's. We then decided to take the bombers with their remaining ordnance to find and finish sinking the enemy CV that Lt. Shadowfox had damaged earlier; we encountered a lone Zero near the CV, which Lt. Raptor and I quickly dispatched to clear the way in for the bombers.  Maj. OldBull made a run on it first but was shot down, by anti-aircraft fire, short of the target and Lt. Chemdawg made a direct hit on the CV, but it stubbornly refused to go down.  Lt. Chemdawg was unable to RTB due to severe damage to his aircraft, leaving Lt. Raptor and myself the only Allied pilots to successfully return to base.  Job well done, see you guys on Sunday Night for round four.

May I suggest adding a hydraulic assist elevator system to your aircraft?  When my F4F started to shake in that dive and you were still on my tail, I knew it was too late for you.  <S>

Allied SSO - Guadalcanal AAR 09-18

Our strike package split into two separate groups tonight, with Maj. OldBull running a flight path to the west and then up around the main island searching for the enemy CV, in a B-25, while Lt. Oceans and Lt, Xray flew two B-25's around to the east end of the island, then turning to the northwest, up the slot searching for the enemy cv on that end.  The fighters, Capt. Raptor, Lt Chemdawg and Myself climbed directly over the main island in search of any enemy strike package that might of been inbound our fleet.

Due to our limited range, we had drop tanks and had to climb out with the engine trimmed way back to conserve fuel; this put us well below our target alt as we crossed the north shore of the island, as well as below the enemy fighter sweep we found patrolling the area.    We turned away from our initial heading in an attempt to drag them away from either strike package, but they only followed us for a few minutes and turned away, back to the west, forcing us to turn back towards them.  To our dismay, the aircraft we encountered were of a new type, that seemed to have much more speed than the Zero and we were not able to close on them again.

About this time we heard a report on the radio that Maj. OldBull had been attacked and shot down during his initial bomb run on A-9.  A few minutes later we sighted them again and all four were co-alt when we turned for a merge; up until now, we had been encountering Zero's, flying co-alt or below us and mainly alone, but these aircraft were winged up and had a major speed advantage, forcing us to disengage and dive out of the fight.  Unfortunately, Capt. Raptor's aircraft was badly damaged in the engagement, but he was able to get it back to A-7 and ditch it at the airfield safely.

The short engagement did manage to buy Capt. Oceans and Capt. Xray enough time to make a bomb run on the enemy CV; they did get some bombs on the cv, causing some damage, but lost both B-25's in the process.  Lt. Chemdawg and Myself, took the opportunity to make a strafing run on the Ammo Bunker at A-9, destroying it, before we started for home; both of us made it home safely to A-7.  While we were on approach we heard a report of a high altitude bomber hitting A-12, but the only damage reported was an anti-aircraft gun position destroyed.

That was the end of the flying for the night, I believe the round went to the enemy this evening, largely due to the new aircraft type they seem to have introduced into the campaign; that said, we have requested some new F4U aircraft from HQ and should have them soon.

Report from Imperial Japanese Forces:  The arrival of the Ki-61 Tony greatly boosted our moral; finally we had an aircraft with some speed and strength. We lifted with a four ship defensive patrol from A12 and headed down to A9 to fly CAP.  At the same time Hawk took a lone G4M Betty bomber and headed south to attack the American base at A12, relying on his speed and skill to avoid any enemy CAP and get hits on the airfield.

We had flown a couple of circuts of our BARCAP line, when radar picked up bandits ESE of A9.  We pointed our Tonys east and moved to intercept but when spotted it was clear that the bandits were fighters and they seemed to be trying to draw us to the SE.  Figuring this was a deliberate feint, we broke off from the enemy fighters and headed due west at full speed as we expected the main attacking force to come from that direction.

At the same time our carrier had been send to the SW to act as a radar picket.  This also put it at risk but the hope was that the Americans wouldn't expect it to be there.  Sure enough the carrier radar picked up a lone bandit coming up from the south.

We nosed our Tonys down to pick up maximum speed as surly the bandit was going for the carrier.  Imagine our surprise as we approached a lone B-25 who was blissfully flying right by our carrier!  The pilot must have been drunk on the rice beer the Americans captured at Henderson Field!  He made no effort to evade and was quickly shot down by our fighters.

Meanwhile Hawk was approaching the enemy airfield which apparently had no fighter cover, so he proceeded to make several bombing runs hitting many installations on the field.

Once the first B-25 was down and no more showed up, we figured this too must have been a decoy attack so we headed back to A9 and sure enough radar picked up contacts coming in from the east.  Enemy fighters, co-alt, the fight starts and Tango got a good burst of gunfire on one of them, but just as quick the Wildcats dove away and were lost over the jungle terrain.

Just as we were reforming, A9's radar picked up bandits to the NW heading SW towards our carrier!  Back we went and we were able to get to the trailing B-25 before he could drop but the second had too much of a lead.  He dropped but the carrier stayed afloat!  The B-25 started what looked like a loop, but it was too late for him, a burst of fire into the right wing tore it off and down he went.

After that enemy forces retreat south and we landed at A9 in our much loved Tonys.

Ate my eggrolls just before the mission and brought 2 wingmen with me this time.

When you banked back and I was behind you I just pulled the nose over and waited for you to fly through the tracers. We were all surprised we did that well with the Tony against your Hellcats. We were figuring we would get ripped apart.

Until Thursday.  :aok

<S> Raptor. Those Hellcats are tough little birds. I think I emptied 75% of my remaining ammo on you at fairly short range and still you flew on. I didn't see many pieces flying off either, so maybe I wasn't even hitting you much?
To you and who ever your wingman was tonight (didn't catch the name) that was a great little fight, had my adrenaline going more than I thought it would... :salute
Trukk, thanks for saving my butt as well.
