I think one of the L birds would be a good addition to AH. We could let them take off from V bases (perhaps even ports) and scout for enemy tanks. As they did not have weapons they would be unable to strafe tanks or destroy M3s. It would be helpful for those V bases that are separated from the rest of the map by high mountains or water (not by spawn points).
Maybe even have them cost vehicle perks as their job is spotting tanks.
Options:
Taylorcraft L-2
Aeronca L-3
Piper L-4 (J-3 Cub)
Stinson L-5 Sentinel
I think this idea was brought up a few years ago in a thread (don't remember by who), but it never really had a thread of it's own.
-
They were usually "armed" with white phosphorous rockets attatched to the wing struts to mark positions.

Would be nice to see some sort of scouting aircraft in the game that only Ports and V-bases had!

I've asked for this several times, but you're right, I don't think it has ever had its own thread. I brought up the idea most recently in the artillery thread.

I'd love to be able to spawn one of these from the large hanger on a Vbase to scout out GVs.....

The L-4 would be a hoot if we would be able to launch them from a V-base. If not, then their usefulness would be very very limited, as in not at all when there are 80+ combat able aircraft to up from an airfield.

and are faster. . .

I was liking it, till i read that. I dont think its a good idea to make you pay perk points for something that has no way to earn perk points itself.
Instead, Maybe Shorten its Range of sight, Meaning the bird has to Fly low. (between 800-600ft) Before it can see tank icons? It'll have the birds within Pintle range Incase people decide to up multiple Birds, yet it would keep it unperked.
I just have this picture in my mind of a defending country upping like 12 of these and the attackers get pushed back to their spawn point and spawn camped because there was so many birds in the sky finding them, And i def dont like that idea.

wonder how many 20mm or 37mm flak rounds it would take to knock one of those little slow moving things out of the air :headscratch:
in a gv battle, especially between two gv bases, there are going to be enough wirbels, ostis and m3s that a low slow spotter like that wouldn't stay up in the air for long. and the fact that there is no real incentive other than "cool factor" to even fly a slow unarmed airplane around hostile ground, it would end up being a hangar queen.
maybe if there was some system similar to the keyboard check6 call. say the pilot spots an enemy gv, hits a key that marks it and sends message to the room channel (purple channel) that anyone who spawned from the same base as the spotter plane, would be able to see and if the enemy gv gets destroyed by friendly ground vehicles the pilot gets an assist and a percentage of the kill points? :headscratch: :joystick:

In my most humble opinion, as cool as it would be and as far as realism goes, they would serve no real purpose. I can already scout with a fast fighter. Would it add a little something in the realm of realism? Definitely. Would I use them? No. There are better options game wise. Talking about slow, when is the last time you saw a VAL in LW? I dont play that much but my answer to that is never. It's my opinion it would be much the same for those cesna wannabe. Would fly them a couple time then go back to something I can hope to survive in.

Good point, but you are missing the target with your shot. ;) You cant up any aircraft from a V-base, the proposal is to be able to up an unarmed L-9 "eye in the sky" from a v-base. In my first reply, I said if it is only available at airfields then not to bother since even the lowly B5N would be better than the L9.

No miss, just a few pings that smoked the engine :D. I'm sure I could get to a far spawn in not much more time doing 300 in my hog from a close airfield than a L9 doing 120 from the vbase itself.
-
An L-9 doing 120??? :O. Any of the L birds wouldn't do 120 unless it was aimed straight down, with a tailwind, and a few manhole covers tied to the struts. Instead let's just make the RV available from the V base it is bright yellow, so the GVers would be able to spot it easy and they could use their pintle guns on it. Oh and what is an L-9?
-
One of those Cesna kind of planes in the OP I think.
-
but then the ac most commonly used for gv recon (from a Vehicle Field) was the Polikarpov PO-2 (U2).
-
More easy planes to kill

I'll be honest with you, I did not see that post.

Well the perk thing is just an option.
I'm not a big fan of reducing icon range because there is no reason why a pilot flying an L-4 should see less than a Spitfire.

What about the V bases that have the closest airfield at 100 miles? Or the ones that have 30K mountains in the way?
I understand that if you have an airbase 25 miles away you can take something faster and even bring bombs, but you don't always have the luxury of that.

Point taken. I wouldn't fly it either way so I will leave it at that.
Have a nice day sir :salute

I probably wouldn't either (I don't even GV), but there are people who would.

Our L bird can do 120 easily and redlines at 140... well when it flew that is, it ran off the runway two weeks ago and was damaged...

Now granted... it is a L-21...
If anything, i think the L birds should be able to see GVs at 6k and possibly even restrict the GV's from seeing it until maybe 3k.
In the RW, the L birds were the greatest feared aircraft. When they flew over a position, the enemy didnt fire at it like they would in this game. They instead went and hid.

L4s never carried any rockets ever, armed only with a radio.
All L-4s were equipped with a map table, but only a select few models carried radios (see below). One crew did get credited with a kill, after firing their .45 at a Storch and making it crash land.
As for the rockets, you obviously haven't read "The Fighting Grasshoppers". Not only did the carry white phosphorus, but a few have been credited to carrying bazookas, and scoring a few tank kills. Here is an excerpt:
"L-4s were also sometimes equipped with lashed-on infantry bazookas for ground attack. These proved to be most useful during Operation Overlord, in the hedgerowed bocage country south of the invasion beaches, for spotting hidden German tanks waiting in ambush for American and British tanks of the invasion forces. Major Charles Carpenter used the first bazooka model produced for the war. It fired its round by means of a battery igniter. The unit itself was a solid, one-piece metal tube 54 ½ inches long. It weighed slightly more than 13 pounds. Its projectile had a range of 500 yards, but the sights were calibrated for 100 and 300 yards. Carpenter had to launch his rocket rounds carefully, so the back-blast wouldn’t ignite his flimsy craft’s wings of doped fabric… The plane relied upon a fixed-pitch wooden prop and a 65-horsepower 0-170 Continental engine for power. Within a few weeks, Carpenter was credited with knocking out a German armored vehicle and four tanks. Often diving within 75 yards of his targets, he was credited with knocking out six enemy tanks by the end of the war. "
L-4: 140 manufactured
L-4A: 948 manufactured (upgraded engine over standard L-4)
L-4B: 980 manufactured (L-4A minus radio equipment)
L-4H: 1801 manufactured (improved fixed-pitch climb prop and improved radio)****
L-4J: 1680 manufactured (featured constant-speed prop)
****= my personal suggestion for AH2 model.

I say if the L9 or other such spotter aircraft gets added for purposes of marking gv's attacking a V-base, let it have the ability to see icons at the SAME range as other aircraft, carry no destructive ordnance (the bazookas were a field mod besides), but maybe a few colored smoke bombs for marking purposes. Heck, even perk the dang thing a few points since the value of having them will INSTANTLY be felt.

I totally agree about leaving the bazookas off. However, it does need marking rockets such as white phosphorus or smoke. I think an ENY of 40 would be great, no perks. But its up to HTC to decide how scoring is made, etc etc. I'm just +1 the idea. I love bringing a -25H into a GV battle and spotting. I rarely fire my 75mm unless they need the help.

That's a nice airplane. What kind of engine do you guys have?

thanks... that's the way it looked when it flew for the Italian Army

Its the original 135 HP Lycoming 0-290-D2 that it was delivered with. Something about this engine though is rare. I dint know if it will be the engine that will be on it when we get it flying again because this is the second forced stopping of the engine in two years. If it passes the inspection, then it will be.
-
That looks like a fin hangar to be in. I see a C172 simulator and B58 wing.
flight, any interior shots? I'm curious if its any different from the J-3 I flew a while ago. (except for the engine of course)

That would be a fuselage of a 1956 C172 that is on a trailer. The local EAA chapter towed it in parades and such. Then they donated it to us. Behind that, is a Beechcraft T-34. Both wings are there on the cart.
There isnt much on that side, but on the other side is our two projects that will fly next, a Fairchild 24 which is all wood and a T-28B Trojan
