Title: Help with Drivers for Radeon X1650 and ATI Tray tools
Post by: gusman on September 15, 2011, 09:12:03 AM
Hey,

I'm running an older system (P4 2.4ghz, 1.2gb ram) on Windows XP Pro. Had a hd failure so reloaded XP on new hd. I'm having some teething problems but for the most part I've got it sorted out but I'm looking to overclock my ATI Radeon X1650.

ATI Driver 8.591.0.0 2/25/09
ATT v1.7.9.1571

My questions are is this the best X1650 driver and is there another version of ATT that is more compatible with my old AGP card?

Thanks,
gus

i use to be a ATI/AMD person, go to AMD and look in their (Legacy) for older hardware drivers.

If you still have the CD that came with your video card, you're probably better off just installing those drivers.  You can also try the old Omega ATI drivers, they haven't been updated in about 5 years so the the latest version of the Omega ATI drivers should be from the time your card was still around.

The latest version of ATI Tray Tools should work without any issues with an older ATI card.  When you install Tray Tools it prompt you to select some compatibility settings for older cards, make sure you check the one that is for your card.

Thank you Gentlemen!

I just need to figure out the best settings using the Tray tools and I'm good to go

This is what I use and I'd like your opinion if newer drivers would help or be better. Presently I don't have any video problems that would make me change.

 Card name: Radeon X1650 Series
Driver Name: ati2dvag.dll
   Driver Version: 6.14.0010.6925 (English)
      DDI Version: 9 (or higher)
Driver Attributes: Final Retail
 Driver Date/Size: 2/25/2009 17:41:10, 325120 bytes
      WHQL Logo'd: n/a
  WHQL Date Stamp: n/a

Hey Fuzeman,

This is what I get from DXDIAG so I think we are using the same driver:

  Card name: Radeon X1650 Series
     Manufacturer: ATI Technologies Inc.
Chip type: ATI Radeon Graphics Processor AGP (0x71C7)
                Monitor: SyncMaster 2494SW(Digital)
  Monitor Max Res: 1920,1080
      Driver Name: ati2dvag.dll
   Driver Version: 6.14.0010.6925 (English)
      DDI Version: 9 (or higher)
Driver Attributes: Final Retail
 Driver Date/Size: 2/25/2009 17:41:10, 325120 bytes
      WHQL Logo'd: Yes
  WHQL Date Stamp: n/a

But when I go to System>device manger>Display adapter

I have two X1650s listed

Radeon X1650 Series
Radeon X1650 series secondary (Why? I do not know)

The driver listed there is:
Date 2/25/2009
version: 8.591.0.0

So I'm wondering if I need the secondary driver installed and if it's affecting performance.

My frame rate usually is in the 22-47 range but it dips pretty badly when attacking a lot of buffs or a furball at low alt

Cheers,
gus

Looks same to me too. I was looking around for a bunch of drivers yesterday after I loaded and ran one of those driver checking programs, It said I had two old display adapter drivers. I'm thinking you just need to load that one.
I came across this one and may try it, Catalyst 9-7 version 8.632.0.0 , with description 9-7_xp32_dd_ccc_wdm_enu.
I don't want to jump too far ahead as that can in itself cause some headaches.

The second listing is from the second video port on your card.
