I heard up north next to Canada temps are already below freezing in some places :rock Here I sleep with my windows open to let in the cold air, its the time of the year where we don't have to run our air conditioning or heating at all and its more comfortable then it would be if it was running
-
Ah, the fresh, bracing air. Bring a sleeping bag, it sounds cold!
-Penguin
-
its freaking cold up here. (me being a desert boy and being used to 100+ degree temps. during the day) it sucks. freaking 44 degrees in fall when i ride my bike to school?!?!!? that is cold!!!! and i hear that in winter it gets as cold as -25 here! :bhead
-
You don't have snow, it's just cold dry air.
Us North Easterners have to deal with 6"+ snow every year. Annoying as heck. I'd rather be in class or working than shoveling snow.

I walked to school one time with a friend when temp was at 11 degree's and it was iced up, it was miserable but I love the cold weather, As long as I have a Jacket, I hate hot weather.

NYC. 6"+ means at least 6 inches. Doesn't mean it's exactly 6 inches. I've seen my fair share of 3ft snow. And that's in the 5 boroughs, I don't want to go upstate and see what happens there.

Well im moving next week. packing up the stuff and now were heading to the midwest. going to live out in Indiana. i like it here in vegas! i dont wanna leave!
im used to the heat but i dont want to freeze in snow out in indiana where they get all that "lake effect" snow crap. ugh...its completely unfair and i want a second opinion! im gonna be leaving all my friends, all the fun casino's and hotels and most of all...all the fun times when i can go out on the dirtbike or the dunebuggy whenever i god dang please!
RANT OVER :devil
Ok im now in indiana. boy is it akward being outside with 2 sweatshirts, 3 coats and 2 pairs of socks. ive gotten wierd looks all around the neighborhood, also no other kids live around me...other than the good lookin' girl across the street...:D (lucky me!)
I also saw REAL snow for the first time today and i must say that i HATE it! its freezing cold, it gets wet and dribbly if it goes down the back of your shirt and it hurts like hell if someone throws a snowball that is really tightly packed. I guess im stuck here for a few years now :uhoh but i guess its better than random street crime in las vegas.

Im probably gonna be off for a few months or so because im moving, i gotta unpack my stuff, get it all set and then we have to go out and do some more boring stuff...ehh its probably better if u keep your 15 bux and use it for yourself. but thx anyways <S>
and i finally got to the hotel in illinois so i can type this. i swear if i have to travel for another 7 hours in the car with my butt stuck to the leather im gonna jump out and walk...
ROFL! nah i wouldnt do that...or would i? Paranoia!

i find you funny. you havent even noticed that i moved to oshkosh over the summer, hence the reason i didnt have much activity here from late june- mid august. if you wanna come to my house and personally tell me i dont live in indiana, your more than welcome to do so.

I'm from Canada. Just outside of Toronto, actually. We get about 1' of snow... it's pathetic. :( But it's already hitting about 8-10 degrees C out here at night... sitting here with now shirt... I can barely type :D

No, you don't. Maybe like 6+ feet of cumulative snowfall.
-
Eeks, I remember one particular snowstorm we had (2004? 2005?) that had 6-7 ft of snow. The front door was blocked and we had to go out using a ladder from the 2nd floor to clean the snow. That's always fun.

I dont know why, but i never seem to get cold. Im usually outside in shorts&muscle shirt during a snow storm while everyone else is huddled in 4 diff sets of hoodies. I tend to love winter. The silence the snow causes, its just a peaceful environment. Especially since im the only one who walks around in the cold :lol

I live in lower Ohio, Weve had some bad ones aswell. think it was around 06-07 we had some heavy snow that nocked power out for the whole week before christmas (came back on christmas day)
We had a lot of canned food stocked for such an occasion, I ended up putting them in the sink, then running the water as hot as possible and then just let the water heat the soup as best it could. was just warm enough.
In 09 Mother Nature trolled us. She didnt snow for 3 weeks straight, but at the end of winter she went out hard. Snowed about 8-9 inches for 3 days. I remember my mother sending me outside to shovel the driveway so she could get to work in the morning, only to have the driveway completely covered again in the morning. Power flickered, Roads were shut down. Took about 2 weeks for all the snow to finally melt away.

I already explained it, so look up and see my answer. When I say 6"+, I don't mean just 6 inches. I mean AT LEAST 6 inches. So again....for the "other" folks....I've seen 3-4ft of snow in one storm (not mentioning snow that was previously there or snow that comes in after), so I know what it's probably like upstate every year. NYC just doesn't get as much, but we will SOMETIMES do.
I don't get what you're trying to show with that picture. That I'm right and snow IS annoying? Or do you prefer to sit there and shovel out snow under your car?

I'm getting spoiled rotten down here in Charlotte. These guys just let the snow melt, don't even bother plowing
it :D I go to dialysis 3 times a week <not something you can just blow off>, and we had a hard freeze after a minor
snow storm.
I was driving to the center thinking no big deal, couple inches and some ice...whoop de doo. But it took me 4 days
to get my new eyeglasses because the optical people couldn't make it in to work :lol

so I take el stupido out this morning and it's cool. I didn't break a sweat the minute I went outside then I noticed that the yard was wet and I wasn't calculating how much that cost me. I love this.

There isn't enough snow to justify it, but there is so much snow that it becomes torturous. It would be pretty awesome, though. However, I need the excercise.

While not up to upstate NY standards.

was being a little sarcastic... but they have ones that go outdoors that some people use to heat their entire house with. That includes air heat, floor heat and water...
Google and yahoo have changed their image areas so that was the only pic i could get to actually post...

Seems like it would be more efficient to have that heater inside your house.
-
Perhaps all the wood is outside the house. It would be back-breaking labor to carry it through the house just to get it to the heater.

They are insulated good, so they probably dont lose too much heat outside. I also always see them covered by a roof of some sort. But thats not to say these big ones arent in peoples houses... i ahve obviously only seen the ones that are outside.
But i wouldnt be suprised if insurance companies prevented them from being in the house.
-

thats very true as well, though im sure some might have wood shutes.
There is a house a couple down from mine and his woodpile is literally about 12ft wide, 8ft tall and about 60ft long and thats just the stacked portion. He has a pile in front of it thats about 20ft across and about 12ft high as well. He works for a company that is contracted by the local communities to removed trees that have fallen or whatever and thats where he gets all his wood from. And he goes through about half that each year to heat his massive log cabin and his 4 stall garage.
-
But i wouldnt be suprised if insurance companies prevented them from being in the house.
There are people local to me, in a "city" in New Hampshire, that still heat indoors with woodstoves exclusively. Not me, no thanks. But my neighbor does. Smells damn good outside in the fall.
I love the snow. No pics of my Jeep climbing snowbanks though. Early Fall is the best. No hunters in the woods yet so we can still use the roads for Jeepin' and not have to be mistaken for a "bear" by "hunters".

You had no power but you had hot water ...
Yes.
idk why that confuses you (But then again i dont know much about the connection between power, and water heatage)
But if it helps clear your mind, My towns split between 2 power grids of diff companys. Basically the Beginning of town (My half) is power by duke. While the rest of the town is powered by the town itself.
The town got its power back on about 4 days before us on the Duke grid did.
-
i dont think the water heater and the power supply are connected. you can have no power but your water will still run because the water heater isnt nesissarily connected to the power itself.

we have an electric water heater... no electric... no new hot water being made. Now we also have a well so we loose water altogether because the pump is electric.

Not too good actually.
Back during Alicia, several years back, we had 41 inches in 3 days.
-
I love the chilly nights and mild days.
We have a gas range and water tank so if power goes out we are all good. I've looked into getting a wood burner to heat the house, but since I don't plan on being in this one for more than 5-6 years, I'll wait till we move.
Perhaps all the wood is outside the house. It would be back-breaking labor to carry it through the house just to get it to the heater.

You seriously need work out some more if shoveling snow and carrying wood qualify as anything more than minor labor.

Here in Norway its rain, rain, and nothing but rain nowadays.. And I am tired sick of it! :bhead
The rivers are flooding over, the hillside along the road I have to drive each day for work had several slides of dirt and trees down on the road, and is under a constant threat of new slides as the rain continues.. :uhoh
Next thing I know I'm gonna be sweeped into the flooded river by one of them one of these days if the rain does not calm down.. I keep one hand on the safetybelt release as I drive through that valley now. :noid

My complaints here seemed to help. Today we had alot of sun. :aok It was just perfect the whole day, even if we got thunder and heavy rain again later tonight.. :(
It seemed to have stopped now, so I cross my fingers for another sunny day tomorrow. :rock
