Title: True Grit:Then and Now.
Post by: Tyrannis on September 17, 2011, 08:26:17 AM
Just got done watching the 2010 remake of it, and  enjoyed it.

Planning on renting and re-watching the original soon off PSN.

Does anyone think the remake does the original Justice or that it flopped?

No disrespect to John Wayne but the remake smoked the original. In part cause it showed proper respect to the original.

The Cohen brothers hit a home run with this remake.

It's hard to call it a remake because the intention was not a remake. The bros wanted to go back and make a new movie out of the novel which is good and an easy read by the way.

If this one wasnt a "remake" then there has never been a "remake" of any movie. I never read the book but the remake was certainly true to the original. Of course a few details were changed.

The difference being unlike most "remakes" this one was a better movie. I love the scene of Little Mattie scamming the horse trader.

each film is an individual 'remake' of the book.

the newer film has been acclaimed for being 'truer' to the novel.

The book strongly plays off Mattie's hardness and general lack of insight to herself - so the reader paying attention can get some laugh out loud guffaws at her unintended ironies. The newer movie gets that feel across better.

And there is no comparison between the way LeBouf was played - I mean, c'mon, Matt Damon against GLEN CAMPBELL????

I like both movies - even though I was skeptical when hearing about the remake - but they are so different in tone that they somehow seem to almost be telling different stories. John Wayne so dominates the first one that it seems to be about Cogburn, while the second one (and the book) seem to be about Mattie.

+1 on the book. Fun read.

Enjoyed both films. The first was a John Wayne spectacle. Put any other actor in that role and it's a completely forgettable film.

The second one is better writing, editing, cinematography and directing with an overall better cast.

The best of both worlds would have John Wayne in the Cohen Bros film.

The language of this film was spot on as was everything else in this movie.

I told my wife 15 years ago that they would run out of movie idea's and start re-making old ones.

Now we need Christine re-made..............

They've been doing it since the 1930s Nostradamus.  :D

I loved both versions of True Grit.  :aok

Saw the new version for the first time a few weeks ago.
the original movie must not have been too far off from the book because there is very little difference between the two movies cept for style of speaking which the second is probably more accurate to the actual time period then the original and some other pretty minor details.

If you saw the original. You arent going to see much different in the remake.

I found both movies enjoyable

the new version told more of the complete story from the girls point of view, where the john wayne version was more focused on the rooster cogburn character. imo, if the original john wayne version had been more like the remake, it couldn't have been topped. jeff bridges just didn't do it for me with his portrayal of rooster cogburn but the movie was overall well done.

i hope no one tries to remake john wayne's the shootist, that was one of the duke's greatest movies.

Go and read the book. The book is about the girl. The Coen bros movie is much more true to the book. It was required reading in high school lit class back in like 1980. I remember having felt cheated when I saw the original movie. When we saw the new version I was pleasantly surprised.

I've seen this dicussed in a lot of places comparing new to old for this movie. It all tends to revolve around Rooster. What's funny is the story is supposed to be about Mattie.

There's a lot of subtle detail in the new movie that is correct for the place and time period. The older movie was shot like some kind of western.

Again. I didnt see a whole lot in the second movie that wasnt in the first. And what was different was fairly minor other then the subtle detail.
