Title: Sept 23 Operation Downfall

Operation Downfall. The Invasion of Japan.

This will be an multipart campaign. The results of part one will be tallied and saved, and the campaign will pick up from that point at a later date for part 2.

Part One: Operation Olympic

Nov 1st 1945

The failure of the Trinity test in July ensures that there will be no atomic bomb for at least another year.

X Day is a go.

An invasion armada dwarfing that at Normandy in 1944 is assembled off the Island of Kyushu.

Intelligence indicates that Japan has correctly guessed the location of the assault.

Japans navy is now combat ineffective. Her naval aircraft have been moved to land bases.

Weather conditions over the past three months have reduced the effectiveness of Allied bombing campaigns.

Japans infrastructure has been severely damaged but production of aircraft and pilot training is rated higher than expected. Some cadets are reported to be as young as 13. Rumours of female cadets cannot be substantiated.

Intelligence estimates that Japan still has over 10,000 aircraft of various type to deploy in the defense of the home islands.

While Stalin has declared war on Japan, Russia has made no moves to invade.

The US is prepared to go it alone.

The recent manufacture of 500,000 US Purple Heart medals is indicative of the casualty rates expected.

This will be an ongoing campaign. At the end of the week, the progress will be noted and saved and part 2 of the campaign will be continued at a later date.

Allied carriers will all have the TBM, SBD and landing craft. Navy fighters will be carrier specific, some will deploy the F6F, some the FM2, others various corsair models.

If the Axis would like to knock the F4U1-C or F4U1-4 out of the game they will need to identify which enemy carriers these are deployed on and target them.

Carriers that are sunk will not respawn for 6 hours and will then be so far out of position they will effectively be out of the game.

B-29's and P-51's will operate from airstarts on the southern part of the map.

Army and navy Japanese planes will all operate from land bases, twin engined bombers from airfields only.

As the allies capture land bases, army air corp aircraft will become available.

Crossing the horizontal yellow line is the objective.

The allies will have to bring LVT's ashore to capture a beach head. The coastal vehicle bases will only have the F4U-1D, TBM's and ground vehicles, the allies will have to push further inland to get USAAF planes including C-47's.

The Japanese will have their most capable plane the N1K2 deployed at the coastal v-bases and the center one V-43 If they lose those bases, the only other place they will have the Nikki is the circled airfield A124.

This airfield A124 will also be a major objective as the allies will have to capture it to bring the B-29 to the Japanese mainland.

Objectives:

Allies:
(Bishops)

Establish a beachhead on Kyushu and push inland, capturing bases with which to stage further operations.

Axis: (Knights

Resist the invasion and destroy Allied shipping off the coast.

Victory conditions

Allied: Push accross the Horizontal 7 line

Axis: Thwart the invasion and push the allies back into the sea.

Draw: Allies contained south of the horizontal 7 line

Question about vehicles:

Wouldnt the allies have better tanks than the 75mm during the invasion of japan?

I mean, the war in Eruope was over. Wouldnt they of shipped some of their sherman 76mm and Firefly's to the PTO to assist in the invasion?

It was brutal out there tonight.

I'm gonna turn in my logbook and grab a cold one while Juan here washes my windows and patches the holes.

Yeah they would have, and the Japs would have had much worse, but there was no way to simulate what a ground war would have been like historically, so I just decided to make that part even all around.

Darn sneaky Japanese guys, couldn't you see I was looking at my map :furious :lol  Ruined my 5:1 :old: Made me look foolish there Nr_Raven, nice attack :aok

Was fun, some very intense fights.

Wish I would have taped that fight with SIK1, I had his plane all shot up, just couldn't get that killing blow.  The fight got slow and he managed to get it above me at the edge of a stall, I'm full flapped waiting like a cat to pounce as he falls in front of me, but he hangs there, and I eventually eak out in front of him, despite my efforts, as his nose falls, looking straight at me and he takes my vert stabilizer clean off :lol.  Great fight SIK1, I don't often lose 1v1, but you definitly earned that kill  :salute

I had a great time, lots of fun fights with some great sticks.  :joystick:
First time I've really flown the Ki-84, and I must say that it is an impressive bird. Much more rugged than I expected from a Japanese plane. :airplane:
BigRat it was a great fight and I'm still not sure how I managed to prevail.  :salute

Had some fun in our Superforts tonight! Hit Tokyo killing much dispersed industry and a few civilians as well. Then we hit some airfields and vbases, but had rather poor bombing results though we did knock down some japs. We sadly lost one of our B-29s to a good ki84 pilot, (S! Jaeger) but claimed 4 fighters that were confirmed. A good trade financially for the nips I suppose.  :D We have been flying low to medium altitude missions due to prevailing weather conditions over the home islands and hope to up another sortie tomorrow night and Hit the Homeland!

S! from the 444th!

Some questions:

I believe someone here said that this scenario would be continued in october.

When it does, will Russian planes be added? since the Russians did join America in the fight against the Japanese.

And if they are, will the p39s be enabled to substitute the p63?

Idk why, but i really have the urge to fly the p39 in this scenario  :uhoh
