Title: Slow Firefly
Post by: Yarbles on September 19, 2011, 03:36:24 AM
I don't really understand why the Sherman Firefly seems to be slower than the other 2 shermans and the Tiger!

Everything I have read suggests the firefly slightly heavier than the regular sherman  but no as much a 6mph slower and certainly not slower than a Tiger.

About 2 months ago i posted a topic asking this very question. The websites i had found claimed it could reach 25mph just like the other shermans.

I was told tho that those websites were wrong and the slow speed was due to extra weight put on by a new turret to house the 17pnder plus armor.

Edit: Plus i think someone said the firefly didnt have the same type of engine the other 2 shermans had. the engine it had, had less horsepower.

Thanks Tyrannis and on this basis given it costs perks we should get our 2 or 3 mph to 22 or 23mph which is what the evidence shows. :frown:

I will never ever ever use this tank again it's a disgrace  :old:

Is the extra MPH going to affect the outcome of a battle?

I thought there was enough evidence that showed that the Firefly lost a few MPH due to both the extra weight and a different engine compared to the US versions of the M4???

Besides, the Firefly does not need any more speed.  Everyone knows the British are not in a rush to do anything or go anywhere.   ;)

Ah yea they didn't throw the tea into the harbor because of the stamp act like we were taught In school. Because of the stamp act the tea was more expensive than what john  handcock was bootlegging in from holland. So in naturally built up in the harbor because no one would buy it. So through several acts of parliament they reduced tariffs and tax's, it still would not sell. So though an act of parliament they just priced they tea cheaper than john handbowling balls tea.  Now you pissed off the local economy that is when they dumped the tea into the harbor.

Don't mess with the local free masons. In Boston anyway

James Dick was branded a Tory in Annapolis over their  whole deal, still had more to do with local economy/politics than stamp act.

Lol you gotta love auto correct stupid iPad

I researched for days to why the Firefly is so slow, and the only answer I could find was the Governor, which was quite common on British tanks which were typically much faster. I couldn't find exactly why they were slowed down so much, I assume its because of the Governor.

Now that book that shows 22.75 mph was under british specifications, from what I read it clearly said a never "exceed" speed on the Firefly was 25mph, I still have no clue other then I again assume its over the Governor or Suspension.

I too remember reading about an engine limiter/govenor, but do not remember where I read it.  Do you have a source for that by chance?  Anyone with any printed source on the M4 series and in particular the Firefy???  If anything, perhaps HTC would consider raising the top speed of the Firefly to 22mph if there is enough data to suggest it???  One could hope.   :pray    :)

Problem is every source I have lists a different speed, some say 25MPH, others say 25 is never exceeded speed, most say 20mph-22.75, problem is nothing specifically is pointed out.

I give Osprey's specifications because they have the highest tendency to be correct of all the research i've done.
