Waxed nostalgic and did some google searches...
Gotta say this gave me alittle lump in the throat...

So how may of you actually played on this map???
-
I did. Back when planes looked like coffins. :-)
-
I played on it only a few times, that was back before the big AOL influx of a 1,000 ( or was it 10,000 ) dweebs, if I am remember ing correctly.. somewhere like 92 through 94 ??? ( don't hold me to these years, but it seems like it )
and me and the wife back then had heated debates ( arguements ) over how much money I was asking to spend on AW

My imitation of a plane on fire......
*********
-
I do have those graphics even one with bases that were named. Those days are not missed.
-
yep that was back in DOS like 1.0 up un to 1.5? perhaps ( was my first taste of WWII planes online and was around 91 or 92 I think, finally no more modem to modem 1 on 1 with friends playing WWI / Red Barron or toronado, etc.... )
those lakes moved later and had a central lake ( pond ) in the middle with rivers running between the countrys to split them around 94/95 when I finally got to play full time , playing AirWarriorSVGA moving to AW4W ( for windows )
and joining AOL in late 94....... AW came to AOL in beta in 95

I thought we were the first wave of the 10,000 dweebs TC? The PC guys long before the AOL crowd :D
I sure don't miss the accidental logging in at 17:59 on GEnie for the $12 an hour whoopsie :lol
I do miss the people from time to time, although a couple of old fossils still here :aok
-
Those pyramids were sweet.
-
fun times
-
Hey boss, glad to see your still alive. I played that map for $6 an hr.
-
It feels strange to think it was more then 20 years ago when I started to play.

I don't know, I am getting old, and all the ones before me and you, are older than dirt lol
the wifey even thought, sure you can play it on AOL since it is cheaper now, until she saw those bills too...... even at $2 ( or whatver AOL charged ) I still had bills $600 to $800 dollars some higher
if only people knew how it was back then.........

I was one of the 10,000 dweebs that came on in AOL. Looking at that map, though a little different than the one on AOL, it really brought back memories.

I know right....all these names and fights came to mind....amazing at how such a simple map worked for us back then.
TC, i played aol when it was free...rre4 was my arena and i joined a squad called Birds of prey when I graduated form the practice arena....
I remember tons of fights with a dweeb called Vati on the Bz/cz border.....and I remember another dweeb called Hajo who was such an enthusiast he would fly his 190 over...BnZ and then run back home.....drove me nuts! When we finally met at an AW con I got to appreciate his simmer point of view....
-
Yup the terrains have really changed.....

I also believe thats when Hitech was a cheater. shooting people down from the other side of the map. Also was the time of the philadelphia experiment, wish we had that now.
-
I missed the DOS days, and I'm glad I did with the stories I've heard about outrageous bills. :O
I'm one of those 10,000 dweebs that joined when it was free on AOL.
RRPac2 was my arena think that was '95, or '96. I stuck with it until EA closed the doors. I then came over to AH and I've been here ever since. :airplane:
-
Map looks familiar, but I didn't come on until '95...... AOL-Hell

TC, i played aol when it was free...rre4 was my arena and i joined a squad called Birds of prey when I graduated form the practice arena....
yep I was so happy when they decided to go free, it really took a load off of wife ack, but then they came back and went back to some type of pay
the map posted above is older than what AOL had, in AOL Cz Land was to the west while Bz Land was south with Az east
and they only had one relaxed realism arena & one full realism arena, which switched up every other month ...one month be ETO following month would be PTO then back to ETO, etc then they added extra rr arenas until it was up to 4 or 6 and Training if I remember correctly was on a completely different server in the beginning of AW on AOL, the first time I came across the infidel LOL ...... I left and went to Gamestorm during AW2 beta which ended up becoming big Week then eventually AW3
edit: I forgot, AOL also had AW-MAC and the MAC users had their own individual server as well, which the regular windows crowd ( well most of them ) hardly even knew the MAC side was there or existed .........

AW had negative land map too. Fly south long enough and you'd find the bases had water and land transposed, and you'd get mega points for even shooting a hangar. Like a 2 hour ride though, so no one believed it until they actually found it. Not sure if it was a glitch or an Easter egg.

Long ago, far away.

It's stranger to think that I had barely been born, and that I've been playing Aces High for 1/3 of my life.
-
I used to up a T34...point it at enemy city/hq-whatever it was....go to mall, mow yard-whatever, come back, blast the crap outta everything....they couldn't figure out what was happening...(spit factory?) A gv could drive for hours and not hit anything

Crap Falc! AW SVGA boxed version and some free time on Genei and I got a number not a name. I only played it until it ran out as I couldn't afford the phone bills as I was a single parent with two youngsters, and now I feel really old as my youngest is 31. I started back into AW when it went AW4Winblows on AOHELL and stayed until it was killed by Electronic Farts. I still refuse to buy any game from EA! :aok Man the graphics were worse than some of the games for the Commodore 64/128 in the SVGA version of AW, but you were flying against REAL people! Thanks Falc for impressing upon me just how frigging old dirt is and now I know that I'm older than it. What an old friend you turned out to be. roflol

Think it was Mage who got a call late one night...
Myself and three other Bz's took the arena over, Owned Az land and was vulching the guys as they tried to up at their last base.
Someone who was Az called and complained, and Mage was not a happy camper and booted all of us. Or was it Moggy? Don't recall all the details, but we all four heard about it.
Good times at the Spit Factory, and those Death Star rides were always fun, except the night I was riding with someone who had put unlimited JATO on his bomber and seemed to have an unlimited bomb supply. As I recalled, I bailed once I realized what was going on. Stayed in hiding under my bed for three weeks expecting someone to knock on my door. :rofl

Heh my first taste of WW2 aerial combat. Have the V 1.5 disk and case here on my desk lol. Never played online but remember it asking me to log onto GEnie. First player to player combat was me vs Thndregg on a null modem connection with my IMB PS-1 SX 50 Mgz when I was 18 lol :)

I have AW3 in my PC.......and films I made in ........mmmm.....1998??? :old:

1996-97 aol had a 4 sided map...green, red, gold, purple....4 bases per team....reset the map and you got back the same map...that is one of the reasons I never ever complain about any of our maps today. Also, they charged $1.99 hr which usually = to a minimum of $300 a month. Tiggerr, Ebola, Dkfi, Pacerr, Hammer were the main sticks back in the day...ended up joining 367th(pacerrs squad) been there ever since. :rock
-
Hay, Falconwing is that you FALCON23? Alchemist right?
NEGATORY! Falc was the longest Commanding Officer of the "Birds of Prey", otherwise known as "BOPS". In AirWarrior I once was a BOP in RRETO4 but I also played in RRETO2 as an "INTRUDER", "Confederate Knight", and ended as a "Flying Skillet". After AirWarrior was killed off by ElectronicFarts, I came here as a member of "Manx" 4-wing and then went to the Hornets (Busher's squad), after Manx left or a different game and then Busher took a vacation from AH and we merged with the BOPS and I stayed there for years and finally went to the "Flying Circus", which is a bunch of us old farts from AW that knew and flew with each other back then. Falconwing was a great tactition and has a great strategic mind and was a GREAT Commanding Officer and a good friend. Falc created the Birds of Prey here in AcesHigh after the demise of AirWarrior, at the hands of Electronic Arts aka... Electronic Farts. AW was great and thrived when it was owned by old Ruppert Murdock.

Hmmm... I was on AOHell from back in 95 and we did have a 4-sided map but it was A,B,C, and D (which was a neutral country and could be captured but not populated on it's own...you couldn't join D country). There were a whole slew more than 4 bases per country and was no hourly charge back then. I know I'm old and my memory is failing but that's my story and I'm sticking to it. hehehhe What you are describing is pre 1995 and most likely pre airwarrior 4 winblows debut on aoHell.

I remember back in the mid 90's when some piles mentioned that he was gonna get a thing called dsl. we all asked him what it was, he said it was to connect to the internet at a much faster rate that aol. we all laughed at him told him he was crazy. there was nothing faster or better than aol.

Doc/Jay,
yes sir,
there was an hourly charge starting out, then it went FREE for AOL subscribers for a little while, then it came back again with a fee to play AW ..... I believe the 2nd time around it may have went to a monthly fee perhaps ( ya know, we all forget crap as we get older, ROFL)......... but that was when I was in the middle of still having AOL but also was playing more over on BigWeek as Gamestorm was starting up / ramping up
cheers

LOL TC, I still can't remember paying while on aoHELL. I do seem to remember that when Gamestorm opened it's doors and the majority of us migrated there that those left on aohell did have to pay like 1.99 per hour of so. My memory at the end is fragmented due to a massive skull fracture that I suffered on 2/22/99 or somewhere around there. Perhaps I'm just not remembering that I had to pay and I'm not saying that you are wrong on your recollection of events back then. I hope you are still keeping up your upgrading less fortunate folks equipment here and you have always done a bang up job in that respect! <S>

Hey Jay. :)
Good to hear from ya.
I began flying again last night. Well ..sort of. I wallowed around and pretty much missed everything I managed to shoot at. lol
For a while I lived so far out in the stix that the only internet was cellular.... really. Bought a house in Tomahawk and ordered the fastest cable they had(withdrawal related).
The kids are 5 years old... hard to believe.

VOD = Valley of Dweebs! And I was there in Az land with the 56th FG.

few hours of borrowed time on that map.
Certainly was a long time ago...
