Please turn them back off. It was the last thing that made this arena different from the others.
-
3k for both sides... was discussed upon very recently.
alt-i will also toggle your icon settings, including no icons. the choice is yours. you can be different. :aok
-
I know i can change what i see but i cant change what they see. Oh well, guess FSO is my last chance. They still leave Icons off right? I live on the east coast now so time shouldnt be an issue anymore.
-
FSO never had "no icons". It's always been "short" 3k icons for both sides.
Icons came back to AvA when HTC introduced player-spawned custom arenas and altered the minimum icon range to 1k or something. I thought they since changed back to minimum of 0 because of the flood of complaints.
-
Hmmm ok well im still gonna give FSO a shot, always been interested in it.

It was the last thing that made this arena different from the others.
Hello Grumpy,
Do you mean the last thing besides the historical plane match-ups, battle reenactments, the awesome unique maps, Axis planes not fighting against Axis planes/vehicles, Allied planes not fighting against Allied planes/vehicles, not to mention the highly involved CM's and Admins? I could go on. Point is that it is a minor thing in a potentially great arena that I hope to see grow in popularity. The icons at a reduced range are a great matchup for those that participate in scenarios and in the mains and is more benefit than detriment to the health of the AVA. I hope you hang in there for the ride Sir.

I see your points but still feel the no Icon was what set the AvA totally apart from all other arenas. It calls upon a greater skill in my opinion to fight not knowing till just before the merge what your up against exactly. Creates the need for split second decisions on how to engage the enemy, not watching the little red number tick down to 0 and all the time to formulate your actions. Just my opinion. Love the maps, plane sets and all but with icons to me its just another arena. Maybe numbers started to decline the short time i was gone but i remember many many nights of 30+ in the arena or more. Maybe i speak for myself but I dont want another arena with 200+ guys playing capture the flag at all costs, we already have 4 arenas for that. This was something different on many levels from any other arena and I just dont want to see it become just another arena. Granted just my point of view but i also know im not alone. Ive always given the staff for this arena high marks for what they have done but I also feel as a player and regular of the arena I should voice my opinions as feedback for future changes. AvA to be honest was the sole reason i didnt cancel my account 9 months ago and Ive been playing this game for almost 10 years.
-
well, declining numbers might just be the sole reason icons are back on. Maybe after the pop rises again they will go no icon after more have had a chance to experience the AVA and realize its usually a better fight in there.

if they're on, this is just a reason for not coming in.........oh well. it was good while it lasted. :(

The only constant thing in life is change Cap. I sincerely hope that you fellers will reconsider your positions. If you do not, then you will be missed.

If you're using icons on/off as justification for quitting, you quit long ago and just needed to have an excuse show up.
-
Its a little deeper then that Dot. I guess my point is that with the icons turned back on when it boils down to it the arena itself, not the players per say, is not much different then the others. I liked the "elite" type players the no icons attracted. Ive been over the MA type play style for a long time. The only reason ive hung on this long is the friends ive made playing the game. Im not saying im going to quit the arena or the game. Ill ride it out and see what happens. I just wanted my voice heard, weather or not its listened to :salute all

i'll possibly give it a try when i get to a point where i can log into the arenas again, but to be honest, i liked the fact that ava was different than the other arenas. now, if they're on, it's just another mw or lw arena.

i think you know me better than that dot.

Hello Cap,
I have already shown this to be untrue. Take a look at my whole above post Sir. The AVA is like no other arena and will never be like the unpopulated EW arena, low populated MW arena, and the big sandbox LW arena. I know it is nothing like the LW arena. How do I know? I fly the LW arena pretty exclusively to the tune of 60+ hours a month, and it ain't nothing like the AVA. For comparison purposes I would liken the AVA more to Scenarios and Special Events arenas--but with something that they do not have: the possibility of action 24/7, not just on a a specific date and time.<----There is another thing that is different by the way! Now hop off that downer attitude, throw on your vintage pilot skullcap (come on we all got one right? :D) and get yourself into the air at your earliest convenience.

Nope. No reason to come back to AvA with the icons on. Same fight can be found in any of the other arenas much easier so why would one bother with the AvA?

Let me ask you this way, which setting do you personally prefer and why?

Icons on or off, the AvA is a fun arena imho for most of the reasons listed above by waystin. Sure you could probably find a fight in any of the MAs that is an axis bird vs an allied bird, but the big difference I see between AvA and MAs is caused by the lack of score in the AvA. People are so worried about score and perks in the MA that they are willing to sacrifice a potential good fight by HO'in, picking, ganging, vulching, etc; and even though some of that does happen in the AvA, for the most part the fights are good clean fights between pilots working to out fly each other. That is the biggest reason I keep coming back to the AvA, the average quality of the fights in Axis vs Allies is leaps and bounds beyond the average quality of the fights in the MAs. Grumpy talked of the "elite" players from the AvA gone past, today's AvA may not be the same as half a year ago; but the majority of the current AvA players are still "elite" when compaired to the hordes running loose in the LW.
All that said, I would like to see the icons off occasionally so I can have an easier time of sneaking a stuka run in and out.

The icon argument is like chasing your tail. Or better pissing into the wind... it makes a mess of the arena.... We all have our perspective:WE HAVE ALL BEEN OVER IT TIME AND AGAIN...
Bottom line The AVA has more elements than not that make it DIFERENT... NOT BETTER than other arenas...
1.The AC: are more equally matched.... making for awesome dog fights.
2. The maps: are closer base to base proximity..making for allot of action even if the population is small on a given night.
3. Icon settings: The AVA offers a variety of icon settings... VERY MUCH DIFFERENT than the MA....The standard is generally 3k never more...Its is often requested by the members of the room to change them to 800k or no icons depending on the requests in the room or the crowed.... Its up to the set up operator.
Each group draws its own crowed. But from what I have seen the numbers are about equal with either setting. Obviously the amount of "ganging" is generally diminished the shorter the Icons are set combined with more stringent dar.. All depending on the base proximity etc..Over all The icons in the AVA are still VERY MUCH DIFFERENT than the MA. The action is much more intense and exiting because of that.
4. The Pepole: .. Very rarely is there allot of "Trash Talk" sometimes there is some friendly banter for fun. Over all the guys that fly the AVA are a fun and pleasant group. There is allot of camaraderie and mutual respect ~S~.. Trash talk and disrespect are not tolerated in the AVA.. The level quality of pilots are very high I see some great sticks in there very often...
5. The Set ups: . They are historic for the most part they have some type of objective in many cases. The CM tend to be very creative with the use of adapting existing terrains to suit the audience and develop an environment of intense action.. Just look at whats going on and what coming on the 23rd..
This week..Operation Husky::: http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,320390.0.html
The 23rd(This Friday)...Operation DownFall: http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,320463.0.html
I think that we can all agree that the AVA is different... Its not like other arenas its no better or worse but one thing is for sure its a blast to fly!
It seems that once folks give it a try they become very loyal.. We do our best to please as many players as we can with the tools we have...
Can we please everybody?? No. No arena can do that..
Personally I'm very grateful to have the opportunity to host in the AVA... I'm meeting allot of great sticks and heaving a ball making new friends in there.. I'm A picky old school flight simmer...
if It keeps a guy like me coming back and interested then standards are pretty high.. :aok
Lets All just look at the positives :). The icon debate is beat... 3k is a standard we are trying.. but often you will see very short icons in the AVA or none. The AVA is a versatile arena..
We do listen to you the players. We do hear you. We do what we can to keep most of you happy..
Most of all we appreciate your participation and faith in us!

Hello Grumpy,
Fair question! I prefer the short icons settings for two reasons:
1) I believe short icons have more likelihood of attracting new pilots to the AVA, as opposed to no icons.
2) I like the short icons because they match to the same icon range of the Scenarios which I absolutely enjoy. My hope is that someday you will see more AVA regulars participating in Scenarios, and more Scenario Pilots visiting the AVA. Ideally those same pilots enjoying both venues at the same time. Perhaps even having setups in the AVA match to an upcoming or in-progress Scenario. It really would be a win-win situation.
The current short icons are not so long that you have an overwhelming awareness of enemy or friendly movements, and not so short or nonexistent that they hide the enemy or friendlies in our favorite pixelized world.

Like I said last night Metal if ya dont want me to ho ya Dont look at me when IM shooting ya :bolt: In all seriousness I find the fights in the AVA are much better than the MA. I would like to see more people in and if that means leaving the icons on short for a little while I dont see the problem. Having no icons is not what kept me out of AVA before it was the fact I go in and cant find anything to kill cept AI guns.

Ok ham, but how else are you going to see me do this :P. I tried it your way a few times, but you refused to run into the parts falling off of my plane when you where on my six and I had to resort to throwing my shoes when I ran out of extra parts.

Hmm I dont remember that I remember you kicking my butt in a FM2 took a while a long, long while but you finally sawed a wing off lol

Separate from personal preferences, there are times that icons have a desired effect.
In the upcoming setup, there will be different models of certain planes enabled at different fields/carriers.
The Axis may want to target the CV that deploys the C-Hog for example.
Full icon will be set at 3k.
By scouting which model Corsair is operating in a CV's vicinity, the Axis may be able to identify the carrier it is deployed on.
Knowing this, the Allies may want to defend that particular carrier more.

BUT doesn't anyone enjoy the thrill of trying to figure out what it is that you're about to merge with, knowing that the enemy's doing the same? or if you don't quite catch which version of a 109 you just merged on the first pass, you have to try to get a good look at it as you decide your next move?
THAT is what made the "no icons" so friggin great. it doesn't give anyone any advantage, or disadvantage (as long as we're all the same setting). people like shane are proof of this. he'll kick any of our tulips with or without the icons. people like me are proof too. i suck in the regular arenas, where i have them, and i suck in this arena. but in this arena, it was more fun. the fights got my heart pounding. fights against puma, jaeger, runney(yes, he was a GREAT fight),grumpy(who always kicks my bellybutton somehow), and a host of others would have me literally sweating when the fight was done. and it didn't matter if i won or lost, 'cause it was the same result.
now is about the time someone's thinking "well, turn off YOUR icons, and you can have that thrill.". this is wrong though. with me running no icons, and you running them, you'll know what i'm in at 3k out. you'll already know exactly what you want to do against me, whereas i'm setting up only a general merge, hoping to get a good look at you and see what you're in, so i can decide what to do. so turning mine off will only provide you with an easier kill. (as if i'm that hard to kill anyway)
as i've said, as soon as time presents itself, i'll still give it a try, just to be fair....and because there's still great guys in there. and now there's some pigs too. :neener:
anyway......that's just my opinion on it. i doubt anyone really cares to hear it. so it's good that you're reading this instead. :devil

Cap I have a hard enouugh time hitting let alone telling the diff between a 109f and a 1092 Even If I Did know the difference my computer doesnt display all that great, a plane is a plane to it. It will show the diff between a Spit 9 and a spixteen but most differences arent that obvious.

The fights will be no less intense, this I am confident of. Second I plan on inviting more than just Pigs as time goes by. So you gents please be welcoming to potential new regulars!
