Title: World of Planes beta
Post by: prono on October 02, 2011, 06:04:22 PM
I never heard about this game before but today I saw interview with creators.
Looks like they are about to start beta next week.

The graphics do look nice, but just like everything else I expect this will be a lot closer to a game than an actual simulator.

Looks impressive.  However, we all know not to judge a book by its cover.   ;)

I see they have the Blenheim, Beaufighter, multiple 109's, the Oscar and Zeke, SBD's, early war Buffalos and F4F's, country specific fleets, and the screen shots show some good terrain graphics.  Oh, did I mention some functional clouds :D

Here is the $64,000 question- will the base line PC be able to handle it?  AH may not be as "sharp" in the graphics department, but A: more people can play AH than the newer "falsh-bang" games because the minimum requirements are less, and B: I think most people are willing to sacrifice a wee bit of eye candy for more accurate flight models, stable gaming experience, and some longevity.

Time will tell.

But what if they end up with several hundred thousand players?  That would tell me that the computer capability line in the sand could be pushed in Aces High.  In fact, I suspect that better graphics and some marketing of it would draw more players to Aces High then it would drive away because of computer capability issues.

I disagree here. If they make the game casual enough, they will attract casual player, which I guess represent the vast majority of todays gamer. Players want to be successful at the games they play. And they want to be successful now. Not in 5 years. Just look at the numbers of WOT. 15000 online on US server tonight. AH is and will stay a "niche" game and that's why we like it. No relaxed realism here.

I bet there will be all sorts of little wheels in WOP to help people fly and kill bad guys. And besides all that, the fact that it will be free to play, tells that they will have some financial system in game that will allow people to pay real cahs to buy upgrade for their planes, so that'll lead to a point where paying customer gets that little extra edge against the other players who dont spend money on it. I'll look at it when it finally comes out. But I dont think it'll play too much in AH garden though. I'm quite sure it'll be a fun enough game to play, but to much concession will be made for the sake of gameplay to call it a real simulator is my bet.

Did someone around here signed up for the beta? It's supposed to open this week. Maybe they could give us a heads up if there is no NDA.

Yeah I guessed that much. I did mention it just in case, so no one gets in trouble. We'll just have to wait. I will still not hold my breath though. I don't forsee a mass exodus of AH players for that game.

I agree with ya there, I even posted on their forums that Aces High would probably be their stiffest competition a lil while ago........

Oh, I agree.  Better graphics and some more marketing would thicken the AH ranks a bit.  If HTC lost 200 players because their system could not handle the graphics, they might add on another 1000+ because the terrain graphics were *that* good.  Losing anyone that would have to hang it up because they could not afford to spend the $50-$300 on system upgrades would be sad, but the line has to be drawn somewhere.

AH has plenty of "relaxed realisms".  ;)  Far too many, imo.

You are probably correct in saying the ToP will have lots of crutches and training wheel gadgets to help people shuffle on down the lane in the name of fun.  God help them though if they have a system in which a player can buy a Merlin engine and put it into an Oscar.  That is the first thing that made me wince about WoT: being able to "buy" a Matilda turret and put it on a Soviet BT7 (or T70?)  There was all kinds of "power ups" that screamed ARCADE GAME at me.  I dont think I spent an hour playing that travesty of a game. Lots of good things within the terrain and game engine, but too many glaring things wrong for me to take it serious.

I'll give WoP a go, no doubt.  I'm hoping HTC can use WoP to improve X, Y, and Z in their air game just as they used for WoT a a reference for their ground game (or so it seems, anyway).  AH's ground game is better now than it has ever been with regards to the gv's, the terrain and spawn points could use some tweaking.  :)

you fellas are thinking that WOP is made by the same people who make WOT................ these are "2" entirely different companys

WOT is wargaming.net  they also I think are coming out with World of War Planes  WOWP .....

WOP ( World of Planes ) is from the people who made Wings of Prey

WOP is more simulation type , similar along the lines of IL2 ........

hope that helps

TC, I did notice that WOP was made by Gaijin, the same dev that gave us titles like Apache air assault and wings of prey. What make me think it'll have a upgrade system similar to WOT is the fact that it'll be free to play. These guys are in the business to make money. No point in making a game if it doesn't pay does it? They'll rely on a similar upgrade and financial system as WOT, I think, to make it worth their while. Now while it may not look as arcadey as WOT may be, and judging from the screen shots we can't really tell, I do believe it will be an relaxed realism(more even than AH SmokinLoon  :aok) game to draw as much people as possible. Having played both Wings of prey and Apache: AA, their flight model did not compare to what we have in AH even on full realism. As for graphism, Lot's of eye candy in wings of prey but they also made the graphics very blurry. AH graphics are much sharper IMHO though they are lower res a bit. I'll take sharp over blurry any day, especially in a flight simulation where seeing what's going on around you is of utmost importance.

Anyway this is merely a opinion debate as we'll not be able to tell until we actually play the game. And that will be in a few months from here.

One last thing. I do believe that it'll be good for AH in the long term. As SmokinLoon said, it'll show how others do things and how things could be improved. Plus it'll rattle their cage. A little competition is good for business.

Business mans are a little like paint, if you don't shake them once in a while they become thick  :D

Well, I think competition being good for business is debatable, but competition is undoubtedly good for us!

It is good for business in that the market doesn't become stagant. TC's AH plug on the WOP board is one such example.

People will talk about online flight sims and search for them, inquire about them. Hopefully, that'll lead some to AH. It sure is some kind of very indirect benefit, but still one that is very real.

It's going to have an arcade flight model, in fact the same flight model as in their previous release "Wings of Prey" which was nothing more than a PC port of the console game "Birds of Prey".
