I see you have windows 7 so it should not be difficult.
Right click on the desktop, than click "Gadgets"

After that the following window should appear:

You can either use the ones that are already there or you can download more by clicking "Get more gadgets online".

These are the ones that I have:
CPU Usage, shows how much each of the 4 cores are used and ram
Network Traffic: ethernet cable
Network Traffic: Wifi
Turbo Boost (one core helping another to do a task therefore completing it faster)
Clock (set to zulu)

You don't wanna see my desktop's desktop. It's flooded with all sorts of works in progress and things waiting to be printed. 1024x768 resolution and I think it has 2 lines on the grid that don't have any icons/files/folders.
EDIT2: I'd like to note that I had all of my icons in perfect order by use, then logged in about a week ago to find Windows rearranged them for me. :furious

The gadgets feature that comes with 7/vista is a good start, but I use rainmeter, as well as hiding all my desktop icons and using desktop as a main directory folder. If I showed icons, the screen would easily be full. Rainmeter is a separate (also VERY low resource) program and almost all of it is community made. Here are some other examples of rainmeter desktops. This one gives you a bigger but nowhere near complete picture of what Rainmeter can do. Like I said, mine is a complete work in progress.

Also, a great thing about 7, is the ability to have your desktop automatically change after a certain amount of time (I have mine set to 30-45 min) Just set it to a folder, and you are good to go. (Make sure you check and clean up the folder first :uhoh)

I used to have mine shifting through a few thousand pictures like the one I have now, but decided to settle on this one. One, because I discovered my computer was lagging every time it made a transition, and two because she's my favorite anyway. :P

Holy icons batman! Really! That's nuts!

I have to admit my desktop isn't much to look at. I never did see much of a point to having a bunch of gadgets, icons, pictures, etc laying around and using resources when I have my browser or my game up 99.9% of the time anyway! When I'm not on my computer I shut it down. I don't see much point to leaving it running and I don't consider having to press the power button and wait 45 seconds to be a hindrance. I just have a dark gray background and a handful of shortcuts on my desktop and that's it.

I guess that's why I'm not impressed with any of the WIN8 previews I'm seeing either. <shrug>

I've never seen a point to the gadgets either, however the icons are there to get to things faster, since the Start Menu these days is nearly worthless with all the crap that gets thrown in it. I tend to turn my laptop off only because I usually end up sleeping near it, but otherwise I leave my computers on to reduce wear on the hard drive spindle and power supply. That, and my computers run health and science researching tasks while idle (http://boinc.berkeley.edu/).

same, I use mid grey (old habit from DTP work) and as little clutter as possible - its less stress on the eye/brain. sometimes a small pic in the middle so its covered by windows when I'm working, currently:

The gadgets feature that comes with 7/vista is a good start, but I use rainmeter, as well as hiding all my desktop icons and using desktop as a main directory folder. If I showed icons, the screen would easily be full. Rainmeter is a separate (also VERY low resource) program and almost all of it is community made. There are no apps in rainmeter, they are all called skins. I suggest looking for good skins here. http://rainmeter.deviantart.com/ (http://rainmeter.deviantart.com/) Just be wary of which ones you download. In otherwords, don't download any that have comments disabled. Also, one of the great things about rainmeter is that you get the basic code of each skin so you can alter it to your likings if you know how (a lot of skins have how-to's in the note sections of their codes). Speaking of, never got around to adding my other HDD's to my system monitors.

Yea, I've got gobs of them. My wife is a photo-bug, and I fly my birds daily so that adds up after a while... I'll see if I have any others to post.

Ive had backgrounds of my favorite game moments, titles, screenshots, and charectors before.

The NCR ranger top pic is my current background. Replaced the FEAR3 one.

I don't mean picture specific to that game, I mean games in general. I know a lot of people here put aces high pictures on their wallpaper. I don't understand that either.

I miss my Aces High splash screen background that had the My Little P51s, LGay-7s, and all sorts of other meme-ish plane skins flying together. One of HTC's "lol let's force overwrite your cool stuff" patches nuked it before I thought to make a backup...though I'd had it since AH1.
