Howdy all! I picked up this three blade constant speed propeller to hang in my garage. Anyone have an idea as to the manufacturer? I want to clean it up and put new decals on it. They sell replacement decals on ebay, and I would like to get the correct ones for the prop. The blades are 40” long from the center of the hub.

I could pull my propeller textbook and tell you for sure, But off the top of my head my best guess (based on the counterweights) is that's a Hartzell.
-
I'm no expert, but at first glance, I would agree with Saggs. Looks like an Hartzell.
-
Hartzell was my first guess too. The shape of the decal seems to fit. But I couldn’t find any pictures to match it online.

Not seeing that many old constant speed props, my guess wass actually Hamilton Standard based on the logo... but it could be either based on just the logo so i dont think we can really go off that... :lol

Hamilton Standards don't use counterweights

like i said, i couldnt tell you anything about either for old props... was strictly going off of the logo...

How about the 12D40? 22D40? 3D40? Those all have counterweights. There are a large amount more as well.

Goaly, Post a full length picture of the blades please.
-
Yep that is a Hartzel. The hub, counterweights and blade collars look similar to the 2 blade prop that I took off of my Comanche many years back. I replaced it with a scimitar triple blade prop. Took care of a recurring inspection that the old prop got hit with after a few older corroded ones in Florida let blades go their own way.
-
What counterweights?
This prop uses external lever actuation of pitch instead of internal gearing so what we are seeing are high strength "blocks" that the levers act upon.

I thought thats what i was looking at.

I hope this helps.

Right now I am thinking about polishing, or painting the hub area silver, the blades gloss black with yellow tips, and applying new Hartzell decals.
I am also looking into suspending it by the axle-hub-bearings assembly from a small trailer, and turning it into a ceiling fan for the garage… We are brainstorming that option.
CHEERS! goaly

Hartzel. I have a wood prop off a 1946 J3, 65HP. if anyone is interested .
-
Definitely looks like a Hartzel to me Goaly. As for spinning it as a fan, make sure you mount it well. Not sure I have a prop shaft for that hub, but get the numbers and send them to me and I might have an old splined shaft lying around you can use.

What do you want for it? PM me details.

Looks like an old Hartzell to me. We just fitted a a brand new three blade Hartzell to our skydive aircraft. The boss took the tip off the old two blader while taxying :ahand: LOL, glad it wasn't me! :bolt:

But does he know (or has anoyne been brave enough to tell him) what he did wrong?

This prop is up on Ebay.

It seems that there are enough similarities to confirm that mine is a Hartzell. (although apparently, an older model.)
-
It's a very cool prop and better illustrates pitch change mechanics than one with internal gearing.
It would be cool to have a servo control the pitch wherever it might end up.....fan or wall.

Hartzell is still around, right? Shoot them an email with your pics, tell them what you've figured out so far and that you want more information and intend to fully restore it for displaying purposes.
