Obviously knew he was in ill health for the past decade and apparently he played it close to his chest.

Great man.
Great man.

well, is apple going to fall and crumble, or is someone else going to save it somehow?
R.I.P. Steve Jobs.
He gave up his position in August, because of his health issues.

Apple doesnt need saving.
Sad to see such an innovator pass. As co founder of Pixar, he brought smiles to the faces of tens of million of children everywhere. A life lived well, the world is a much lesser place without him. RIP Mr Jobs
-
RIP Steve.
Apple is in trouble in my opinion. It floundered when Steve stepped down with his health issues the first time. It's new phone coming out is being pummeled.......... only time will tell.

Yep. I am not a fan of Apple anymore (had a IIe growing up). But I always respected what Jobs and Wozniak were about.
RIP Steve Jobs.
-
wow, can't say i'm really surprised but i thought he might have a few years left.
the heart of apple success has always been the computers, not phones or mp3 devices. the company may not grow like it was but it will survive.

Paved the way for every bit of technology we have now
-
Paved the way for every bit of technology we have now
...sorry but not really.
-
Paved the way for marketers everywhere.
Wozniak is who got things moving.
If either Jobs or Wozniak were replaced with another person, I doubt Apple would exist.

WOW! It's not that we are hating on him it's that we don't quite see him as being the GOD that Apple fanbois make him out to be. He was a visionary and a heck of a businessman that's for sure. Did he revolutionize the computer era? I don't think so. He just took pre-existing ideas and marketed the heck out of them until they because associated with apple. Computers were around long before the Mac. MP3 players were around long before the iPod. Smart phones were along long before the iPhone. Tablets were around long before the iPad.
with out him we would have no aces or some BBS, gosh some people have no lifes, hating on dead people. thats all i have to say.
WOW! I won't even bother to start on that one.. I really hope you're being sarcastic there!
-
:rofl makes me scared seeing how stupid some people are
Hate to say it, but should I be bothered by the feeling that I don't care that he's gone? I mean, i have 2 iPads, 2 iPhones and a MacBook - they are tools that I use. Tools, like a Stanley hammer. It's no miracle what was produced - fact they didn't produce any tech that I'm aware of - it was just packaged in an appealing way to the consumer. I'm no fan of the closed phone iPad architecture, drm and iTunes.
Not everything that came from his organization was Jesus worthy. Spoken as a user, not a fan by any stretch.
-
:salute
-
I think he really pushed the industry in the direction it has taken. I don't doubt that many of the things we use and take for granted would have come about anyhow but he certainly had an impact on getting them into the market and profitability for his company. The use of competition from his company spurred quite a bit of developments into the market place.
Was he a "god", heck no but he did make an impact.
IMO, and I am NOT an apple / iphone / i anything fan, he did a lot of good. The big question now, what path will his company take?
-
Steve Jobs was the driver.
Wozniak was the crewchief.
In most star driver careers, the crewchief get's replaced by a collective (team) for the driver to reach his success zenith.
That said, I think apple has let the opposition in smart phones gain far too much market share by being way too tight on connectivity to thier products in that apple usually asks for huge licensing sums for a third party hardware supplier's product to work with iphone/ipad/ipod touch.

Not surprising, basically same thing happened when they were in the personal PC market.

Next time do your research. It can in fact run on a Mac if you run windows on it. And yes modern macs can dual boot to windows.

a mac can only run AH if it has windows installed on it, and when you but it directly from the store, it doesnt usually have windows installed on it already. wouldnt most people buy a PC instead of a mac due to the fact that mac's are typically made to be buisiness suited?

That's never been my impression of macs at all. In fact, I would argue that PCs dominate the business world while macs have been targeting the individual consumer much more.

YES i do no that apples cant play aces high 2 thats not my point, if you know STEAVE was a god, with out him a PC would be a work computer and no gaming possable because no one thought about making them so a normal person could buy one for there home, again no steave jobs= we would have nothing no aces high no any other stupid game no any BBS NOTHING why because he was the one who thought "i wounder if these computers could be used by a average joe' BTW i have not one apple product and think they are horb compared to a PC but STEAVE really did make it so a average joe could buy a computer.
you guys amaze me how mean you can be by hating on one of the people that MADE THE PC revolution as i call it. you are people who what things handed to them and dont think about how it happened. think about it skorp, if not for him i dont think we would be doing this BBS or gaming anytime soon.... same for bill gates and Wozniak.

uhh...how did you manage to spell steve's name wrong when its right in your face? also, PC was the compitition, if apple didnt happen, well PC still would have and we would still have our aces high today because someone wanted to play a game on the computer, and thus, the gaming PC was born. BTW and moron with half a brain cell could work a computer, because the directions for a computer are written for someone with half a brain cell.
and nobody here is "hating" on the apple corp.

Computers were coming along fine.
Do you think there would be no laptops if Compaq had not started? It was all a matter of time.
-

wrong. my MacBook Pro runs AH at 60fps in HD.
AH is only good on windows computers, and those are PC's.
wrong. there is no such thing as a "windows computer." windows is an OS.
the "PC Fanboys" dont exist.
wrong. just sniff around the net, you'll find plenty of em.

olds442, your mistake is thinking Apple started the whole consumer computer market. They did not. There were several successful computer companies around before Apple started shipping their first computer.
As a matter of fact, Radio Shack beat Apple to the market. I know as I was there when it happened.
Apple really is more of a marketing company than anything else. They have wonderful technology, but most of the technology is a contemporary spin on older technology. I am not saying they have not created any technology, they have.
What Apple does better than anyone is marketing. The company's marketing is simply brilliant. They can take older technology, wrap it in a new wrapper, and everyone will believe Apple created it all. That says a lot about how good their marketing is. That is also a credit to Steve Jobs.
Steve Jobs was one of the early players in the personal computer era and the industry lost a valuable friend, partner, and supporter. It is sad.

<snip>As a matter of fact, Radio Shack beat Apple to the market.
i thought radio shack was just a store that sold the stuff? or did they actually make some of their own stuff as well?
-
their marketing is fantastic, but their real strength is their core culture. in common with what I consider the best companies out there, their focus is on making great products, which tend to sell themselves anyway. they make stuff which makes their lives easier or more fun. which generally means that it will make some consumers' lives easier or more fun.
xerox had some doodles of interesting ideas which I really dont think they would have ever developed on their own. apple ran with them and obsessed over the details to produce something useable. considering what a bodge MS have made of even copying apples interface stuff over the years, I very much doubt they would have ended up with anything as usable as Win7 had it not been for apple.
even if you hate everything about apple and love using your MS OS, you have to concede that what you are using now would not have been anywhere as good without the lead from and (vague threat of) competition from apple.
Jobs, Wozniak, Markula (breadhead with vision) and a bunch of other talent like Raskin did something special which has made everybodys' lives just a little richer, whether you've ever used an apple product or not.
-
Their only real failure I can remember is donating apples to the schools. The actual donation was great for the name and advertising. The failure was in the premise that those students would buy allples when they moved on.
Jobs was definitely a mover and shaker.

The spelling is atrocious.

yes, im no fan of apple pfft its really what you stated above a spin off of old tech, but steve you have to admit, did alot for all computers in gen.

i thought radio shack was just a store that sold the stuff? or did they actually make some of their own stuff as well?
Back in the day, Tandy manufactured all their own computers in Ft. Worth, they also made all the furniture they sold and many speakers as well. At that time Tandy was Radio Shacks parent company.
All the printers Radio Shack sold were manufactured specifically for Radio Shack, by TEC and Ricoh.
their marketing is fantastic, but their real strength is their core culture. in common with what I consider the best companies out there, their focus is on making great products, which tend to sell themselves anyway. they make stuff which makes their lives easier or more fun. which generally means that it will make some consumers' lives easier or more fun.
<snip>
I highlighted the part which Apples marketing has done for them. The fact you believe it is what great marketing is about. I know for a fact Apple does not make anything that would make my life easier or more fun. I picked up an iPhone once and stood there for 15 minutes trying to figure out how to make a phone call. Not fun at all. The keyboards on an Apple computer are the worst keyboards I have ever put my hands on. The operating system is the most convoluted system I have ever tried to use. Not easy at all. That is not the point though.
Apples success lies at creating a need for something that no one considered they needed. I was successful at creating a market for a product no one ever asked for and it was a huge hit. I know what it takes to get this done. It is not easy. When done correctly the result is much of what you claim. However, in order for the marketing to sustain itself, the products do need to be good products.
The best marketing alters perception without the user being aware they are being manipulated. You only need a small percentage of people to be effected, as they tend to be very aggressive about supporting the product and thus creating a desire for the product through various emotional hints (i.e. ego, pride...).
I was always envious of Apples ability to do this consistently, as it takes an enormous about of work to create the strategy which accomplishes this.
Did Apple push Microsoft? Not so much. Xerox did more than Apple did. Microsoft's first version of Windows (Windows 1.0 never shipped. I still have a copy of it) was based on a next generation CP/M OS which Microsoft bought. They have never really created anything. They buy technology and put their name on it. In a lot of ways though, Microsoft and Apple are the same.
As far as Apple goes, Microsoft had always considered Apple to be a niche product. So much so, that when Apple was in serious financial trouble, several years ago, Microsoft bailed them out. Yet, they are both very similar companies, in many ways. They both have derived the current technology from older technology or from other companies. As an example. Apple used to have their own OS. Now they have wrapped their GUI around another OS. That saves them a ton of development dollars. They are getting it. Get the OS out the door for as cheap as possible is the fastest way to create a profitable computer system. The marketing is so well done no one gets upset that they have exited OS development.
Microsoft started with the UNIX core, striped it down to basic components, (and DOS was born) and wrapped CP/M code around it. Market all this technology as their own and here we are.
At the end of the day, Apple has done a much better job of marketing than Microsoft has. Even so, both companies have needed each other from time to time. It is a strange, yet somewhat symbiotic, relationship.
Heck, I could write a book about this topic. I was fortunate to be right smack dab in the middle of most of it. Apple would probably sue, or get an injunction, to keep it from being produced. They are very aggressive about attacking anything which would upset the marketing machine.
-
I highlighted the part which Apples marketing has done for them. The fact you believe it is what great marketing is about. I know for a fact Apple does not make anything that would make my life easier or more fun.
bear in mind that until the iPod, apples marketing budget in the UK was roughly £0, so my experience is all first hand using macs and PCs to pay my bills. trust me, I'm the last person who believes the hype, whatever it may be. for the kind of things I do, macs have usually made my life easier and my costs lower. for you they apparently havent. that is why I said:
... it will make some consumers' lives easier or more fun.
-
You are talking about the advertising budget. Marketing encompasses much. much more than just advertising. Product placement, the look, feel, shapes, textures, colors, are all marketing tools. Even the Apple stores are marketing driven tools.
Apples marketing is involved in every step, from inception to production and there is no company better at it than Apple. Steve Jobs drove that. He understood how it could make or break a company.
-
I guess an Apple a day doesn't keep the Doctor away......................... ..................... :bolt:
sorry j/k

If your cost was less using a Mac then you must have stolen it. :)

I even had a TRS 80...
Very informative Skuzzy.. gracias

nope I was talking about marketing budget. thats why I chose to type marketing instead of advertising.
I know its inconceivable to some, but there are people out here who are able to evaluate different products and make up their own mind which suits them best.

Because Jobs was responsible for many great innovations, doesn't mean he wasn't one of the biggest aholes who ever lived. Common trait amongst I/T people...their genius makes them even LESS able to relate to others
