Title: WOW nice work with all the new stuff!!! M-26 Please
Post by: WWhiskey on October 07, 2011, 04:36:09 PM
M26 Pershing

Production

Regardless of how it came about, production finally began in November 1944. Ten T26E3 tanks were produced that month at the Fisher Tank Arsenal, 30 in December, 70 in January 1945, and 132 in February. The Detroit Tank Arsenal also started production in March 1945, and the combined output was 194 tanks for that month. Production continued through the end of the war, and over 2,000 were produced by the end of 1945.

Following its introduction into combat in Europe, the T26E3 tanks were redesignated as the M26 in March 1945.

You guys are pumping out new stuff so fast,, I wanted to make sure you had an idea for the next ground vehicle!   nice job BTW  !!! :aok

it meets requirements, so it can technically be in game.

From what ive seen typed up, the Firefly was a BRITISH TD,therefore the british have a tank to take the tigerII on.

The russians have the t34/85.

But the American Branch lacks a Heavy tank. Bring in the M26.

No the Firefly is an M4(which psst. is American) with a British gun

the firefly is the british variant of the M4. Ment to act as a stopgap till the british could design their own tank. It is more than simply "a m4 with a british gun"

it really was just the M4 chassis with a British 17 pdr gun. so it was 75% american, 25% british technically speaking.

IIRC it was only meant to be fighting only against tanks-thats the reason it didnt come with a hull gun?

you stopped looking once you got to wikipedia again didn't you? the british had their own tanks before the firefly, and they were capable of putting up a fight. if you looked further into it you would find that your ideas about the firefly are wrong.

Though the British expected to have their own new tank models developed soon, British Major George Brighty championed the already-rejected idea of mounting the 17 pounder in the existing Sherman. With the help of Lieutenant Colonel Witheridge and despite official disapproval, he managed to get the concept accepted. This proved fortuitous, as both the Challenger and Cromwell tank designs experienced difficulties and delays.

After the problem of getting the gun to fit in the Sherman's turret was solved, the Firefly was put into production in early 1944, in time to equip Field Marshal Montgomery's forces for the Normandy landings. It soon became highly valued as the only British tank capable of defeating the Panther and Tiger tanks it faced in Normandy at standard combat ranges. In recognition of this, German tank and anti-tank gun crews were instructed to attack Fireflies first. Between 2100 and 2200 were manufactured before production wound down in 1945.

first thing you missed is the british had combat tanks in operation long before the challenger and cromwell, therefore it was not a "stopgap".
second, the firefly is categorized as a "tank destroyer".
http://www.militaryfactory.com/armor/ww2-tank-destroyers.asp (http://www.militaryfactory.com/armor/ww2-tank-destroyers.asp)

third it is not fully a "british variant" as is actually an american built m4a sherman tank with a british modified turret and main gun, part of the u.s. lend/lease program.

when i mentioned the firefly, i said that the brits had their tank to fight the TigerII. and when i said the American branch lacked a heavy tank, i ment that it lacked a tank to take the TigerII on with.which is why the m26 would be nice to have.

This whole time ive been talking about the Firefly being the brits answer to the  Tiger/tiger II, in which the link i posted stated that both the Firefly was a Stopgap during its time, and also during its time it was the only british tank to be able to take on both panthers and tigers, as the link i posted states.
