Title: AOE vs total war
Post by: dkff49 on October 09, 2011, 11:58:51 PM
Saturday night I tried to install AOE2 onto my new Windows 7 computer and ended up disappointed since it would not run at all.

I realize that the game was never made for that system but with that I decided to look for a game very similar to the AOE series that my computer will play.

I looked around some online and found AOE online but I am not really looking to play online. I usually only used that game to give me something different to play and it is definitely good for changing things up. I have read in several places that AOE 3 will play on 7 and read of other people having problems getting it to run. WIth that in mind I decided to see if I could find a reasonably priced ($20 to $30 max) game that was intended to be run on 7 but have been having some difficulty.

With all the searching I have done in the last couple of nights it seems that the closest I can come is with something from the Total War series.

Any suggestions.

Only play total war if you want to lose sleep and possibly loved ones.

Lots of good RTSs out there.

Company of Heroes
Red Alert 2 (The best IMO)
Civilization IV/V

Company of Heroes is my favorite. Great graphics and gameplay. After a couple of skirmishes, you realize the AI isn't that great. But it's not retarded either. Online is where it's at.

ahem, the civ titles are turn based not real time. just pointing that out, not that the game play sucks or anything. civ 4 & 5 will play on win7 though.

Willitplay.com (http://Willitplay.com)

analyzes your system  and lets you know if you can run it.  Id'd go with the toatal war series they are addictive you can lose many hours  on thsoe games. I still play Rome:Total war

Sadly this tells me I've been on the computer too long.   I saw AOE and thought "Aces over Europe".

Ahh those were the days :)

Actually AOE2 will run fine on Windows 7. Did you have an issue with the color not looking right? If so you just need to alt-tab out of the game, kill explorer, and then alt-tab back in and everything will be fine.

I also would reccommend the total war series, you can get them on steam for pennies.
