Title: Flying below the radar
Post by: fwav8or on October 13, 2011, 08:13:01 AM
Hi, I just wanted to confirm the altitude for flying below the radar.  I read on the training site that it was below 500 ft AGL.  However, I asked the question in the MA and got a couple of different answers, both below 100 AGL.  The reason I asked is because I was just flying along fat, dumb, and happy on the edge of the map, over water, in the middle of nowhere, and somehow got shot down!  :O  Perhaps, this guy was just lucky to be at the right place at the right time, but I was at about 400 AGL and thought maybe I was on the BarDar.  Thanks for your help!

The current radar setting for dot dar is 65 ft. It used to be 500 ft but it's more challenging now.

Is that Icon radar, Map Radar, or both? I have heard Map radar is 500 ft, icon is 65 ft.

My understanding is that dot dar on the map is 65 ft. You can see the settings in the arena setup on the clipboard. Offhand I don't remember exactly what they're called but you'll see different entries for icon range and radar altitude.

Under 500 no Dar bar, under 65 no dot.

Darbar is 250ft.

You can check all settings in any arena by options/arena setup/envronment/Arena settings.
The setting you are looking for is "SectorCounterAlt", to be found under the tab "ranages". "RadarAlt" is referring to the dot dar.

At the edges of the map, there will be a red arrow seen by enemies on their map.  That indicates what grid you are flying in.  By the lack of a dar bar, your opponent knew you were under 500' and outside of any dar circles.  He probably just guessed what your objective was and followed your likely flight path from the grid your red arrow appeared in.  Anyway, that's what I do.

  When did this happen?

Long time ago, sometime during last year.
