Title: Car guys I have a 710 question.
Post by: Beefcake on October 17, 2011, 05:09:22 PM
Ok guys I'm a poor excuse for a car man and I need to see how bad I've screwed things up. Basically because of my stupidity I ended up overfilling the oil on my truck by about half a quart and I know having to much oil increases the pressure and can cause the oil to froth up and trap the heat.

My question is I need to have the oil changed on my truck anyway but is it safe for me to drive it to the shop? And before you ask I don't have the proper equipment to pop plug and drain it myself.

Just change the filter, easy to do.

Half a quart probably isnt a big deal any way, but if you feel that you need to drain it down first, remove the filter. The oil filter holds about half a quart. If the filter isnt mounted open end up, you should run the engine for 15 seconds to pump oil into the filter.

many years ago me and some mates went down to the coast for a road trip, about 30miles in the oil light went on so we pulled in to a service station. it was my mate's first car and he didnt have a clue about mechanics so asked me to sort the oil. I topped it up and rechecked the level - all good.

then I remembered all the times I'd been the taxi driver when no one else had a car and how much they'd wound me up on road trips. so I poured in an extra litre, closed the bonnet with a thumbs up, hopped into the back and cracked open a beer. after about 2mins back on the motorway we made smoke like HMS Exeter retreating from the battle of the river plate. revenge is a dish best served oily, in a massive black cloud, covering all 3 lanes, about 40 miles long.

If it's just half a quart (one pint) I wouldn't even worry about it.  You're usually good to about a quart or so but anything more than that can be a problem.

On a related note when I was first starting out as a mechanic I worked at a shop where we had "guns" that pumped the oil from hoses up in the ceiling.  This one guy I worked with had turned his on to refill a car when the boss yelled out, "Ray you've got a phone call!" so he set the lock on it and got the phone.

A few minutes later I just happened to walk by and I see the dial reading (in quarts) 20... 20.1... 20.2... 20.3... and I yelled out "Ray!  I didn't know this car held 20 quarts of oil!"  He threw phone down and quickly dove to the car and kicked off the oil!  We raised the car back up and upon removing the drain plug it shot out about five feet and about NEVER stopped draining out!

He finally properly filled it back up and then made the mistake of starting it up with the bay door closed.  That thing smoked LIKE CRAZY!  Ended up having to let it run outside for about half an hour before if finally stopped smoking!  Good thing the customer wasn't waiting!
