Title: A Beech 18 rudder for the Man Cave.
Post by: G0ALY on October 18, 2011, 07:05:38 PM
Howdy all!

I picked up this battered rudder from a Beech 18 to hang in my garage. The covering was really tattered on one side. My original plan was to strip the fabric off of the entire rudder, and just display the framework. But, I decided to try to save the (relatively) undamaged side, and hang it so that you can see the rudder as it would normally appear, and then you can walk under it and see the interior structure from the other side.

Here are before and after pictures. I got a little creative with the painting, trying to give it the look of the 1941-42 Army Air Corps.

I still have a little cleaning to do on the stripped side. It was unbelievably filthy. It even had a mouse nest between two of the ribs.

The painted side needs just a little touchup. And I plan to shoot it with a clear satin finish to remove some of the gloss. But I want the paint to dry for a few days before I do that.

I have a friend working on a mounting bracket for the prop. And there is still a wingtip from a T6 that I want to somehow display in the garage. It’s turning into a fun place to have a beer or two!

What happened?

I have no idea what happened to the original plane. I just bought the rudder online from a guy who was selling old plane and truck parts in Arizona.

Oddly, the cheapest way to get it to Ohio was to put it on a Greyhound bus. Less than half the cost of shipping it by any other means.

The prop I was referring to, was purchased from someone here in Ohio. I posted a thread about it earlier, asking for help identifying the manufacturer. When the guy who sold the prop to me heard I was just using the parts to display in my garage, he gave me a wingtip to a T6 Texan. I’m trying to find the navigational lights that fit into the wingtip, so I can have them light up once that part is displayed.

This is directly below where the rudder will be hanging:

Add the old Pepsi machine full of beer and the garage is turning into a fun place.
Cheers!

Be careful Bud! It can get out of control quickly… It all started with this piece, http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,319763.0.html
On it’s side, its 6 foot long and 4 foot tall. I brought it home from an estate auction, fully expecting my wife to complain. When I pulled it out of the van, she took one look at it and stated, “You would have always regretted NOT buying that.”

I'm thinking about seeing if i can get the whole side section of our L-21's Canvas to put up on my wall along with a roundel from the wing

We trucked it home yesterday from the airport it had its accident at and we discovered the guy that did the repairs from the last accident took shortcuts and never painted the silver base paint on the fabric. That silver base paint is what protects the fabric from the sun's UV rays and eventually it would have disintegrated. So now we also have to completely recover the entire plane in addition to doing all the repairs.
