Title: A basic puffy ack question

I did a search on puffy ack and I also did a google search for aces high puffy ack.   Just to many lines returned in both searches to be of any real use.  I started back in the AW days, so you would think I'd know this.   My question is how does puffy ack work in AH.  I understand how it worked in WWII for real.  Does it work that way in the game?   I've been shot down by it in AH many times and have never really thought about it. 

When the real puffy ack was deployed there was the initial explosion and the flack was distributed out at high speed to form the puffy dark cloud of flack.   If the initial explosion didn’t damage nearby aircraft, the theory was that aircraft might be forced to fly through the puffy flack cloud and be damaged by the flack debris in the air. 

My Father flew P47’s and later P51’s to escort B17’s out of England and on two different flights sustained damage not from bursting flack but from debris left in the air that was still floating down to earth.  I don’t  know if that is how it works in AH, some how I doubt it.  Does anyone know?

AH "spawns" puffy explosions around you in a box, randomly positioned.  The explosions' spawn density is inversely proportional to your speed and acceleration.

As far as I know there is no post-explosion residual debris to damage you.  The nearest thing to that in the game is flying thru shrapnel from bullet impacts on an aircraft or GV that you just hit.  That causes no damage.  Just esthetic sound effects and maybe some force feedback shake.

In Ah ack tracks you from 3k altitude and up.....How far out and away from the ship before it 1st starts shooting at you I am uncertain of.

From there anytime you dip below 3k it automatically stops shooting BUT, no matter how long your flight  (as long as the Group is still floating) As soon as you come back toward it it will start shooting at you again and never forgets.

I have been many miles away from the CV (18k perhaps with no CV in sight) and it will still shoot at me above 3k. It only forgets your tracking ID until you either  re-plane or it re-spawns.


Not answer to your question exactly but how it works or used to work in 09 AH


There is no falling debris that can kill you

I actually almost never get damaged/killed by ack.  I do get the "hit" sound quite often (that sound you hear when something hits your plane.. not the explosion sound) and I do see damage every once in a while but probably about 75% of the time there is no damage to go along with the sound.

Maybe I'm just extremely lucky in this regard.  Is is possible to get hit by flak but suffer no damage?

For sure you can get hit but not lose any parts.  Dunno if that means no damage, or damage below parts-breaking threshold.

16K, 47m cruising along. 1st shot of ack = Pilot wound.   Happens on a regular basis for me. I guess it is what it is...

Jed: not enough info to draw any conclusions, but in case you did not know.
I use to think distance had no affect and flew accordingly. After a while I realized that the ack was less severe up high and did not jink so much. Started catching it in the cockpit a lot. I just had to find the right balance. It is still accurate up high if you do not jink some and even then I will sometimes jink into it.
Also, 16K is 5.33K to a gunner. Fly stright for 10 seconds and you are well within the kill skills of several players including myself.

You don't notice the little holes so much unless they're in the pilot.

I think the way it corresponds to the game is that AH either by design or perhaps just by chance, uses the third method described in the training film to concentrate  the puffy ack into a box of dense fire in the path of the bombers target.

Fly straight and level at 33,000 feet and puffy ack will definately damage your plane in short order.
