Still can't believe it myself.  It happening so suddenly and to him, of all people.
They actually showed, live, a very brief clip of his girlfriend in his box already face in hands and torn up looking at the race feed.  A really gutting sight.
...
Maybe this'll be more incentive for reversing some of the stupider rules.  Like the fuel limit.  That's in the same vein as was going to 800cc.  Kenny Roberts put it as well as ever: riding this year's M1 he had less fun than on his old beater from decades ago.  Said on the M1 you're either riding it perfectly, or crashing.

An unusual crash in that the bike seemed to regain some grip.
In a  low side accident the bike and rider normally just continue to slide away from the turn.
He may have tried to knee the bike back up.
Marco had no escape once the bike found grip and drove him into the path of Edwards.

Sincere condolences to his family and friends.

That's the thing, he hung onto it so well that it recovered grip instead of sliding & spinning away into the kitty litter like they usually do.

It's got to be hell for Rossi and Edwards.  Reportedly Rossi was with Sic near the end.  Must've been near the end, cause Rossi was still in his box on TV, something like 20-30min after the crash.  And the docs called it right around that time - about 30-45 min after the crash.

Not into bike road racing. Was into dirt racing years back.

Devastating crash. Hard to watch.

The fella on the other bike had no out. He tried his best but at that speed he was mostly along for the ride. When he hit Marco, who was on the ground, Marco's helmet came off. Marco did not move after that. He was sprawled on the track face down.

Both Edwards and Rossi trampled him.  Edwards maybe could've had some divine insight and swerved to the outside in time, but Rossi?

Poetic injustice is that one Marco's best qualities is what did him in - enthusiasm.

I missed the race and just saw the clip. Horrific accident. 99.9% of lowsides throw you out of the corner, very very weird accident. Can't blame Edwards for choosing that side it was the right thing to do, given the rate of his turn already it's incredible how much he tightened it up. Never had a chance. Also never ever, in years of motorcycle riding and uncountable races watched seen a helmet come off.

Very sad. Ciao Marco  :salute

Simoncelli apparently was asked if he was ever afraid of dying in a racing accident, and he responded: "No. You live more for five minutes going fast on a bike like that than other people do in all of their life."
