Title: Wimpy
Post by: Dundas on October 23, 2011, 03:35:45 PM
I just watched "Target for Tonight" again and think we could do with a Wellington bomber. Good old "F" for Freddy!  :airplane:

A Wellington Mk III would be a nice addition for early war European settings.  It carries a useful warload, has defense that has a chance against things like the Bf109E and Bf110C, was renown for being touch and, most importantly, is slow enough for the aforementioned German fighters to actually catch it, unlike the Boston Mk III.

Wellinton B.Mk III:

~250mph
eight .303s, two in the nose, one in each beam and four in the tail.
4,500lb bomb load.

Plus you'd see me flying it in LWA now and again, even if it meant certain death. :D  The more bombers, the better! :x +1

It wouldn't rival the Lancaster.  It would rival the He111.

Lancaster Mk III:

~285mph
four .303s, two in the nose, two in the dorsal turret, two .50s in the tail
14,000lb bomb load

Wellington Mk III:

~250mph
eight .303s, two in the nose, one in each beam and four in the tail.
4,500lb bomb load

Hmm, how would it compare to a Stirling? IIRC, the Stirling only had a ceiling of 14,000ft but could carry a whole lot more than 4,500LB.

Hell, add it all.

Wellington, Stirling, Halifax, and update the Lancaster. :D

Stirling was expected to be the RAF's war winner, but it was a dog that couldn't climb above the worse of the flak.  It was withdrawn from operations in favor of the Lancaster and Halifax.

Halifax doesn't make sense to add as it is pretty much the same as the Lancaster, 13,500lbs of bombs, same speeds more or less, same guns more or less.  Maybe someday, but the bang for the buck of developer time would be very low.

Wellington was the most produced British bomber with over 11,000 built and formed the backbone of early war RAF Bomber Command.  It was the only competitive British bomber at the start of WWII.

The Stirling later in the war was used for Airborne operations.

That won't happen in AH as it would invalidate the C-47 (and Ju52 is ever added).
