Title: Artists
Post by: titanic3 on October 28, 2011, 02:27:28 PM
Any artists in the house?

Got myself a few hand drawn pics I wanna share.

My scanner isn't the best, but I hope you at least make out the drawings.

30 views and no criticism at all?  :frown:

And yes, I know the RAF symbol is off in the third picture.  :o

those are all unfinished...now that you have the outline you need to shade them in.....outline lines should be much softer if you are looking for realism.

keep at it. :aok

Other than that, it's a lot better than what I can do.

Heh, I WAS going to draw the Battlefield 3 logo, but that flame on the soldier's chest was annoying me.

Hah, don't worry, when I first started out, all my drawings were a bunch of different length straight lines :D. Although I pride myself on learning to draw on my own, never had an art teacher until this year in school.

Dream job: Video Game Concept Artist or a Pilot. :D

Really nice work.

Keep it up!!!

Thanks! I'm currently working on the Fallout 3 box art and trying to look through the Films and Screenshots section for any good ones to duplicate. If anyone wants to me help me out, find a good one for me :aok. 355 pages is a lot to go through, hehe.

EDIT: hey, you could try looking at MODDB.com there is always lots of groups modding games out there and there is always people looking for artists, you could help a mod get done and i guess it would be pretty fun

People have asked me about drawing before and I tell them it's usually just a matter of practice, both in the muscle memory in the arm and hand and training your eye to see spacial relationships, learning how to really LOOK at what you're seeing.

I've thought about giving it another whirl, still have some of my old drawings/prints around here somewhere, it's been a long, long time.

if you want to get good

........practice ....practice.......practice

best advice i could give.

use your finger to shade........get a 6b pencil for your dark shadows.....3h for outline and soft sketching...... hb for softer shadows.

a couple pencil drawings, last one is in prisma color pencil

Real nice drawings Ink. But the thing about drawing, at least for me anyway, is that I CAN'T color. At all.  :joystick:

I HATE coloring, everytime I try to color, it just ruins the whole picture for me. I'm not saying black and white paintings/sketches are bettered than colored ones, I'm saying I can't color for the life of me. If I could, I would.

As for tools, like special pencils and brushes or things like that, I never use them. Give me a plain #2 pencil and I'll draw whatever you want me to draw. Give me a 6B or a 3H and I'll stand there going "duuhhhhh.... :headscratch:"

Maybe I should start learning how to use those things, but I've always liked drawing with #2 pencils, press on it and you have dark clean lines, lightly stroke it and you have gray shading, and I can do just about everything with it.

thanx bud......the reason you have a hard time with color, is because you don't have enough practice.

stop with the #2 pencil.....you will never get to the point you want, if you don't use the correct tools, the first drawing i posted was done in 01.....i was 22 years old.......my entire life has been a part of art in some form or other....i am completely self taught....i would not steer you in the wrong direction.......i would not have been able to get that shading with a #2 .....

not only the pencils do you need to upgrade, but the paper itself......get 100lb strathmore smooth surface......and finish the drawings :old: an outline with no shading is just some lines on paper......that anyone can trace :old:

not saying you are.....but that's exactly what a line drawing looks like.

:aok Thanks ink. I have the paper, Bristol Strathmore sketch pad.

I'll see if I can go and buy a pencil kit. Although personally, I'm 99% sure I'm getting a Wacom Tablet Intuos for Christmas and I'd like to do my future drawings on there. Straight into the computer and eventually, learn how to use PhotoShop and create something all on my own.

thanx guys :salute

Titanic, I cant say I have only used photoshop A small amount...but have used GIMP for years...long before I got a tablet....I would say they are very close, I think what ever you can do in GIMP you can do in Photoshop and vice versa...except Photoshop may have more options....but there is a mod that you can down load for GIMP that is quite cool...it gives you a new brush that actually works the way a paint brush works...as far as mixing color that is already laid down...so say you lay out some yellow....if you take purple and paint over it, it will change to brown.....

it works very similar to actual Paint.....

say if you want flesh tones...mixing green and red will give you a brown...adding white to that will give you a perfect flesh....

all complementary colors do that

red+green= brown

yellow+purple = brown

Blue+Orange= brown

yet all three browns are slightly different..this is more useful in actual painting..but something you should know, if ya wanna be an artist....

don't limit yourself to just one medium....A true "artist" should be able to work in any medium...

if you find yourself having a hard time getting proportions down right, A VERY good trick is using squares...get yourself a piece of clear plastic and score 1/4" squares on it in rows.....now take your paper and draw very light 1" squares on it, place your picture you want to draw under the clear plastic...and then just worry about drawing what is in one square at a time...you could go as far as take measurements and just times them by four on your drawings.....

another thing that is not so time consuming as drawing out all those squares...say you are drawing a face....but the nose is giving you issues, just take a piece of paper and mark on the Paper the length of the eye, from corner to corner...then compare it to the length of the nose...now on your drawing compare the length of the eye to the nose the same way you did on the pic you are drawing....

remember Practice practice practice :old:

I would say they are very close,

Nope.. nowhere near close.  If you're thinking current versions (CS4 and 5) vs off the shelf GIMP.  But GIMP is much more suited to drawing than Photoshop is IMO.  I gave GIMP a test run a little while back and can see it's utility but I much prefer CS4 for editing, retouching, etc of photo's.  Generally when I'm messing with an animation or avatar I'll tweak the image a bit in CS4 then save as jpeg and take over in Paintshop Pro.

That said Ink your work in GIMP is phenomenal.  I don't have the talent, the patience, or the minds eye, to create art like that.

i have one of the 3, it doesnt take much to just have fun with your art if your going to make something in GIMP/photoshop. meh, so what if i dont have talent or the "minds eye" to do it, if you have the patience then i guess you can just mess around until you get a result.

I have the Bamboo "pen and touch"  and it works great..it has up to 4 touch points, but I don't even use that aspect.I just use the pen, and shut off the touch.

Hey, I haven't been on the boards in a while, lots of real life has needed  priority for me for a while.  I've posted a few of my drawings here, though it's been a while.

This it's the one I'm working on right now. It's a portrait of my girlfriend's daughter, about half done at this point. Lots of shading and refining left to be done, but you can get the .  It's not scanned yet, just a phone camera pic, so not as lot of detail from the pic, but it is there, I promise. It's just a camera phone pic, so don't be too harsh.

Thanks man! Still a lot of work left to be done on it, but I'm pleased with the progress so far.

I actually caved in to your argument from a while back and went ahead and used a grid this time. Made out almost too easy.

When I get my scanner hooked back up I'll post a scan of it. Unfortunately I'm not back online yet worth anything but my phone, so it may be December before I can do any real posting of pics and stuff. Hopefully I can get back in game then as well.

When I get my scanner hooked back up I'll post a scan of it. Unfortunately I'm not back online yet worth anything but my phone, so it may be December before I can do any real posting of pics and stuff. Hopefully I can get back in game then as well.

very cool man...I remember that convo....it definitely takes a lot of guess work out of it.

that piece is looking real nice, I look forward to seeing the finished piece.

I'm sorry, but pressing a few buttons on GIMP or Photoshop doesn't count as art for me. Maybe for you, but not me.  ;)

Concur titanic...

The spirit of the thread is creating art from the ground up not creating it from an existing image although both could be considered art forms.  My opinion for the .01 it's worth is creating from scratch is a much more demanding field.

Oh and Madd... seriously cool sir

I used to sketch alot on into my early 30s.

Now if I want the effect I wash a picture through software. Like these on my phone. Not near as enjoyable but quick for the look. I can do that right on my phone.

well this is an artwork thread..so, heres my art.

oh and dicho-i did build it from the ground up. your not presented with the screenshot and told to edit it..it takes a good eye and some patience to get the right angle and all that other good stuff, not to mention the editing of the picture. so yes edited photography IS a form of art that is built from the ground up.  :D

Last time I posted this, I got accused of altering the photo with Photoshop rather than just drawing it freehand. It became a whole big nasty deal. All I'll say is that this was totally freehand, didn't even use as grid, and it took me an incredible amount of time.

I actually think that if you look at it, and look at the actual photograph, the arm odd lined up about right really. That is just a support hand, it's just resting on the pole, not lifting.

I will say though that I think I got some of the hands a bit too small.

I used a grid on that pic of Sydney I'm working on, it saved a lot of time and effort I think.  For some stuff, I'd just much rather free hand it, it's a much more interesting process

After looking at you guys' work, my own pales in comparison. But, never-the-less, here are a few random ones from my sketch book I used to draw in back in "the day." (look at the dates... they range between 1989 and 1994, when I was in school and had time. Someday I dream of having time for that again, someday.

Just like a lot of teens, I was a little into D&D in the early '80's and demons and goblins provided interesting subjects
