Title: King Tiger AP Damage vs OBJ
Post by: SmokinLoon on October 29, 2011, 04:38:16 PM
Not a bug per say, but perhaps an oversight.

I was reviewing my charts showing the different damage values assigned to the different main tank guns and I see where I found that the King Tiger can take destroy a standard OBJ (ord bunker, fuel tank, barracks, etc) with 2 rounds.  I did not actually check the damage values as I ran out time, but if the HE round of the King Tiger is valued at 234 like the Tiger and T34/85, I would hope that the AP round will be assigned a similar value and not be as effective as the bulk of the other main tank gun's HE (156).  Having an AP round doing that much damage defeats the purpose of split ammo load outs, imo.

Perhaps double check the damage value assigned to the King Tiger's 88mm KwK 43 L/71 AP round???

Thanks.   :salute

Sorry for the self quote, it would not let me edit.  Edit part is in RED in the first sentence.

Might be intentional, so as to make the gun have more 'oomph' at long range.

I mean if they use an HP system for tanks (which would be the only way I could see working other than a "any penetration = kill" method), it would fall into line with what I've seen (one-shotting T-34/85's at 3100yds with the KwK 43, when a close range hit from the KwK 36 isn't a guaranteed one-shot kill on the T-34/85), based on my limited expierence with the KT.

Damage done to player controlled objects (planes, gv's) is calculated completely different than damage to OBJ such as buildings and ammo bunkers.  As it stands now, the AP round does the exact same damage as the HE round from the Pzr IV, Panther, LVT-4, and T34/76.  The AP round from the Tiger I and T34/85 do 114 lbs of damage (3 shots to bring down a building), so one would figure the King Tiger would be right in line.

EDIT:  HOLD THE PRESS!!!  I was just digging around for some further information on the HE rounds for the King Tiger and it appears that the AP rounds of the King Tiger were mainly the PzGr. 39/43 APCBC, those had a small charge of HE that needed about 30mm of armor penetration for ignition.  I'm not sure of the TNT charge weight but if HTC modeled that in to their ammunition it would make sense as to why they have the King Tiger's AP rounds as effective vs OBJ as the HE round of the Panther, Panzer IV, etc etc.
