WOW i'm surprised they didn't foam the runway down before hand. Kudos to the pilot.

Live television footage showed the Boeing craft landing on its belly, with a few sparks flying as it hit the runway covered with flame retardant foam. There was no blaze but firefighters hosed the plane with water and foam as a precautionary measure.

I remember reading an article in Pilot Magazine that was critical of using foam on a runway.

Boeing manages to be noncommital and says a big NO at some applications.

I'd tip my hat to the pilots who managed this, but i have neither hat or a way to contact these fine people.  :salute  :aok

The best part of the video is watching the crash/rescue crews playing with the foam sprays :)  They're just waving them around in some cases, trying not to knock the passengers off of the exit slides and stairs.  Right at the end, one just shoots almost straight up, just splattering foam on everyone in the vicinity but not doing anything else really.  They firefighters probably get to shoot the foam maybe 1-2 times a year, so they sure didn't waste this chance

They probably will charge the airline for the cost of all the foam too, so why not use it.
