Title: Missions that still work: Updated for v2263 (Nov2011)
Post by: bbosen on November 02, 2011, 02:09:56 PM
It's time to update my "Missions that still work" thread. I'll be testing all of my offline missions to let you know how they perform with the current version of Aces High (v2263). This posting covers my "PacMix01" mission for my trusty old "SolomonC" terrain.

PacMix01: To start things off, I just tested "PacMix01". The previous version (compiled for V2.20.3) works pretty well with V2263. I ran it twice to test it. The first time I crashed into the ground after about 2 minutes of combat. The briefing and audio banter audio worked perfectly, and the mission timing is still OK. I didn't survive enough combat to assess whether the AI is improved or not. The second time I survived until my side (Bish) shot down ALL opposition (about 20 minutes). AI  might be slightly improved compared to recent versions, but still isn't very good (and not nearly as good as it was back in version 2124). After about 20 minutes I turned back toward my own base to land and Aces High crashed, going into an endless loop playing one of the "waypoint" audio snippets followed by "aceshigh.exe has stopped working". This is on my XP machine with 2GB RAM.

Next, I recompiled it with the current Mission Editor for V2263 and flew it again, to a successful completion after about half an hour, and there were no problems at all. The AI didn't crash into the ground much, so it seems to be somewhat improved. I'll upload that newly compiled version on my site soon. Conclusion: This one seems to work fine when recompiled.

Download this mission here:

From among the many offered versions, be sure to get the version that best matches your version of Aces High.

More testing (other missions) to come....

Mission: "EuroMix", from my website here:

http://techvideoreview.com/FlightSimMovies/AcesHigh/Ah2Missions/Ah2OfflineMissionsFullPage.htm

"EuroMix" won't run at all under V2263. I tried and tried, but Aces High always crashes. I even tried stripping out all of the audio snippets and recompiling, but it still crashes. I don't know why.  Sigh....

If you want to run this big, complex mission, you'll need to use trusty old version 2.12.4 of Aces High.

Midway:

You might want to hold off.

I've done more testing, and I'm having some problems with this version 2263, even with that mission that I THOUGHT was OK. I can't get the simulator to even recognize the presence of that mission unless I have a lot of extra files (the source code needed to build it) in place. I'm digging further into this, just to determine what's now REALLY necessary to install a mission. But it looks to me like something is definitely wrong....

....Sigh

....Did you try that PacMix01 mission? And did you see it as "available" from within the SolomonC terrain?

I have the SolomonC terrain by Peabody version 12 and it shows up fine.   I don't see the mission available though.  I have the pacmix2263.res file in the missres folder, even if I click show practice missions for all terrains, it won't show up.  I also tried copying it into the misstemp folder, but that didn't work either.

Thanks for looking at it.   :salute :)

Yeah. That's what I see too, when I try to drive things with just the .res file using the current version (2263) of Aces High.

It DID work for me a couple of days ago, but I had all of the source files present then, too. When I delete the source files I get the same as you: can't see the mission at all.

I need to modify my installation instructions. I'll let you know when I get this figgered out so you can try it again.

OK. I fixed it. The mission flies to completion without crashing, and all of the special audio banter, maps, and other frills work too. I had to change my installation instructions. Here's the updated link with fixed files and corrected instructions:

http://techvideoreview.com/FlightSimMovies/AcesHigh/Ah2Missions/PacMix01/Ah2PacMixMissionFullPage.htm

Version 2.26.3 Artificial Intelligence is....  well....  not so bright. The "bot" planes fly low, slow, uninspiring ACM, and they crash into the ground a lot. I KNOW the guys at HiTechCreations can do much better than this. They must have decided, for business reasons, to keep the bots dumbed way down. Can't blame them for taking whatever steps they need to make to stay in business.....

Oh noooo.....  That's what I wanted was bots that did something smarter than that.   I've seen them low and slow crashing into the ground before and stopped using offline missions for that reason.   :frown:

Hope it gets fixed and/or improved soon.  :pray

Thank you for getting it to work though.  :salute

"EuroMix" mission working now.

I just recompiled my big "EuroMix" mission for Aces High Version 2.26.3 (November 2011). Previously this one has only been available for the classic old version 2.12.4, so if you've been waiting to experience this one with its cacophony of storyline radio banter, NOW is the time to give it a try. I just got "MacDonald at Dobodura" working with AH V2263. I had to trim the audio narrative back quite a bit to prevent it running out of memory, but I was able to preserve enough of it to tell the storyline. Unfortunately, my site is down for maintenance right now and it may be a day or two before this is available. In the meantime, I'm working on "Hannah at Scarpantos".

"If your computer stores them as HTML files, they will not work."

Guess what. :bhead
Any help? Anything at all? I really want to play some offline missions before I get on the main server, any help would be appreciated unfathomably. Also, I downloaded "100+ planes furball", put it in the folders,  but it's not listed when I open Practice Missions in NDisles. I assume "100+" is too old?

Browsers differ in the way they handle downloaded files. In general, you will want to RIGHT-CLICK on the link and then carefully read the prompts from your browser. Most modern browsers will respond to your right-click with a new pop-up dialog box containing  a drop-down list with options from which you can choose. You will want to choose "Save As..." or "Save Target As..." or something very similar.

That will probably open a new dialog box with additional options. Tools within that dialog box will allow you to browse into your filesystem to specify the location where the file will be saved. LOOK CAREFULLY at that entire dialog box. There will probably be several little tool icons or buttons, each intended to help you with related tasks. Most browsers will offer an additional drop-down box (look for a little arrowhead pointing down) with options relating to the type of file to be created. Microsoft's "Internet Explorer" will probably offer two choices. One will be "HTML", and the other will be something like "ALL FILES".  Do not choose the "HTML" options. "ALL FILES" should work if your are using Microsoft's browser. Other browsers use similar terminology.

This is the standard, well-known, generally accepted method of downloading any arbitrary file from any web site. Use this method from ANY web site, any time you want to download anything. This method allows you to control the location and type of any downloaded file. Hundreds of millions of Internet users do this every single day. Be brave, experiment just a bit as you explore your options, and you'll succeed just like they do.

OK. I found that one of the sound files that I was using for the German flights within my "EuroMix" mission was triggering a bug in AH V2.26.3 so I eliminated that file, removing about 5 seconds of "crowd mumbling" sounds in the briefing room. Now you can fly on the German side. Thanks for identifying this little problem. Just download the 2 files for EuroMix V2.26.3 again, using the same process that was previously documented. You'll find them here:

With this addition, all of these missions are now compatible with Version 2.26.3:
