My CPU fan went bad so I went to the store and purchased a new fan but it has a 3 pin connector and my cpu_fan connection on the MB is a 4 pin. Can I connect that to the system fan pin? Any advice is appreciated.
-
You can hook it up to the four pin. The fourth pin is for variable speed.
EDIT: If there is no fan hooked up to the CPU fan header then the MB wont boot.
-
i dont have a single fan hooked to my mb at all and my comp boots up.

Thanks Challenge! I tested the connection and the 3 pin fit right into. I thought the 4th pin was for variable but I just had to be sure.

I can't seem to secure the cpu cooler to the mainboard. Those plastic pins do not want to go in. Any suggestions?

Don't buy a push pin fan. But if you do push harder and pray.

Sorry you are correct. If the fan fails the MB should sense it and refuse to boot.
@Getback: What socket are you using?
