Title: Squads, a question for you.
Post by: Brooke on November 09, 2011, 05:47:51 PM
I run the "This Day in WWII" events.

I am thinking of making them more like the registration of FSO's instead of the "anyone can show up" style that they are now (as I think that will make participation larger and more reliable).

Would any squads be interested in that?

They run once per month, commemorating (and themed on) the most-important battle of that month, running on the day of the battle.  (For example, December is of course Pearl Harbor.)

The battles run are:
January 25, 1945: Battle of the Bulge
February 2, 1943: Battle of Stalingrad
March 7, 1942: Siege of Malta
April 18, 1942: Doolittle Raid
May 8, 1942: Battle of the Coral Sea
June 6, 1944: D-Day
July 9, 1943: Operation Husky
August 13, 1940: Battle of Britain (Adlertag)
September 7, 1942: Battle of Milne Bay
October 14, 1943: Black Thursday
November 8, 1942: Operation Torch
December 7, 1941: Pearl Harbor

Details on each setup are here:

Sounds good.

Any other squads out there interested in such a thing?

Personally I say no, that wouldn't make me more likely to join in. It just doesn't appeal to me in the way that a snapshot might. It's the whole tying it to the date thing. I'd rather have a regular schedule, hypothetically speaking.

Just one man's opinion, and I don't speak for my entire squad.

I would be interested but the problem I run in to (and I think many will which is why I am putting it out there), the Special Events run at 10:00pm EST on that day.   If it is a work night, I cannot participate as I get up at 4:30 daily for work.  I am not sure I could put the same effort into warning orders for such an event.  I'd have to do it on the fly just prior to launch.

So, really for me, the only killer for me is the time of launch.  I think it is a good idea.  You would lose participation though as the walk-ons would have to have registered squads.  Many would walk away I think...

Good idea but hope to see more discussion on this topic first...

I also think that may be the case.  The variable night is what keeps me out of it.  I already commit to FSO 3 Fridays a month... as do many.  But, with open participation you can get anyone to come and join the scenario.  If you make it a squad only event, I'm not sure that many FSO squads would join due to their FSO commitments... and you would prevent the ones that are not in a squad from joining in.

I wish I could take part in them, but like Slip... if its on a weeknight... I cant stay up.  If its on a Friday.. I have FSO.

Actually, the point of making it squad based is to boost participation.

Open participation is dismal.  One big problem is that the day does vary.  I liked that "This Day in WWII" is on the day of the battle:  Dec. 7 for Pearl Harbor, etc.

However, I guess I could just move it to a particular Monday night on every month, as what I have now isn't working.  Not only is the day variable, but I also plan around every other special event, making the time I use sometimes bad.

Having squads helps a lot with recruiting vs. open.  When you have squads, they recruit their own players, so you need to market to a more-concentrated base, compared to marketing it to all players, which is harder and less effective.

I like the idea. It probably would make it easier to make a habit out of it than randomly walking on does.

So are you saying you have to be in a squad to play?  There's another event I can't take part in just as I found out it was fun in Coral Sea.

Oh well.

not necessarily -- I have ideas to include everyone.

But, just open registration isn't working at all.  I had 10 guys playing in Operation Torch.  At 10 people, it's not worth it to run it -- so I have to make some change.

Hey Brooke,

Try not to compete with FSO and weeknights are bad for some <except Friday>. Sunday is a week night. That leaves you with Sat. I'm sure Squads could just add SWWII <Saturday in World War II> to there regular FSO email once a month. Just make out the mail for the squad adjutant's to attach.  ;)
Run the event on the closest Sat

 :salute

Brooke, is there any way you can adjust the time? Say back it up to maybe 8pm EST? Might help a little.

I really wouldn't mind having 367th join to do it, but usually the low numbers are what has gotten me, last few times has been awful numbers.
