Will play it a few times today in memory of the ship and crew.
I always think of the ship at the bottom of a deep, ice-cold lake - but if you stood her on end, she'd stick up 200' above the surface of the water where she lays.
Even a huge lake like Superior is shallow compared to the length of the ships that ply her waters. The Fitz's bow could have struck bottom and the stern could've still been on the surface.

The Fitz's bow could have struck bottom and the stern could've still been on the surface.
According to current theory this is exactly what happened. The ship dove under a wave, powered down until the bow hit bottom and the weight of the unsupported aft part of the ship snapped her in two.

ya know?
way back when i first heard this song, i loved it. i still do to be honest. way back when i first heard it, i had no clue what it was about, or that it was true.
even realizing that it is in honor to those men, knowing the meaning still makes the song a little less enjoyable though. :salute

my uncle was friends with one of the men on the Big Fitz. as far as i know, he still doesn't like to talk about it, and while he says he likes the song, he won't listen to it. i like the song too, but it has always made feel really sad. terrible tragedy :frown: R.I.P. crew of the Edmund Fitzgerald

Now thats a rare find. Being a Mariner I have alot of respect for that ship that went back out. I worked towboats in Alabama,Florida, and Tennessee.
I've been caught in many storms, and its not alot of fun on a work boat when you start breaking apart tow in rough weather. I knew some of Mariners who never came back or got Seriously injured. Unfortuanatly the worst one is when our sister ship bring'n empties back, ran a trawler over. The crew was Veitmeese, and didnt speak english. No survivors on the trawler. Sad state of affairs to say the least. Was an entire family. :salute
