Well, I received one of these from a relative for my B-day a couple weeks ago, and just got around to messing with it last week.
My entire life I've HATED Apple and their supporters. All through High School having a C64/C128 we made fun of Apple people and the lack of good flight sims like F19 Stealth Fighter and Airborne Ranger etc for the Apple, or at least how they were crappy compared to ours. Then the mighty 286 came along, and the gap of gaming grew ever wider. Then fast forward to the Pentium years, games like Rainbow6, all the Microprose and Janes Simulators, and then Warbirds and Air warrior...the laughs on Apple were really on then. Silly geese and their "application only" computers. So limp wrist-ed, and who the eff is this Steve Jobs guy anyhow.
Well, after a week of using this Ipod Touch, color me converted. What a truly amazing and powerful little gadget. All I wanted was a decent MP3 player - I was expecting the 100$ Sony Walkman - but the Ipod Touch completely blows it out of the water. SO MANY apps, WiFi wireless internet connection, video player that plays back every movie I've tried to convert so far, YouTube app that's as simple as it is fast. A touchscreen that is actually easy to use and actually WORKS, even the tiniest little dots for dragging the time lapse bar for movies and mp3 tracks is a one shot deal 99% of the time. I'm still a little skittish being out in public - one glimpse of "those" obvious loudly white colored earphone cables, and you've been outed like Liberace. But after day 5 or so of running on the indoor track here, I started holding my head high and proud...yes!, I'm one of "those" guys, and proud of it dammit! Let's see your crappy little walkman store 15 of the latest eBooks, and let you read them with the same functionality of my 2 dedicated e-readers sitting on the desk. HAH!
The only weak point I've found so far is the battery doesn't last nearly as long as advertised, they claim that you should get 40 hours of mp3 and 7 hours of video. With brightness turned up to a level that you can actually see clearly, I've found these numbers to be about 200% embellishments. But, with a car charger/fm trans costing only 15 bucks, who cares. For long plane and train trips (we're going to Europe after Xmas to tour around on the rail system and see all the WW2 places I've read about for the last 30 years), I purchased a little backup universal power unit for 75$ that 'll charge phones, Ipods, laptops, etc.
As a review, I'd score this little unit 9.5/10, I'm that impressed with it. I also got the latest version that came out in Oct 2011 with the "new" IOS 5 operating system apparently. Not having anything apple previous to this, I cannot comment on how much better this OS is, but from all reports I've read, it's supposedly not a leap forward, but a couple of good long steps. If you're considering a new Mp3 unit, and already have a phone you like and don't need the Iphone, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Ipod Touch.

I have the 4G, 32gb Ipod Touch. You're right, it is very fun to use and very useful. :aok
I do want one of these for Christmas though... http://store.sony.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&identifier=S_Tablet_S_Series
If you don't want to use the apple headphones, buy some Beats headphones. :)

Buy a case, dropped mine once and now it looks like its been through a dang hurricane. :(

:rofl
I've got a Blackerry... have used the iPod Touch before... The blackberry is good. Ipod is better. :D

never owned an iPod apart from one I bought for work. our PBX system music on hold CD player died so I bought a nano from the apple refurb store for ~£30. wired up a charging cable and modded the PBX MOH board to charge it, loaded it up with music, plugged it in and hit shuffle then play. I havent touched it for over 4 years and its still churning out music for our telephone system ...

I do have to say, the iPod/iPhone are great, but they are the only Apple product that I will prefer over other competitors.
-
Got myself the Ipod Touch 1G and 2G. Never really wondered why people upgraded or tossed away their old ones.
It's a music player, that's all I need it to do. :aok
All those apps and Wi-Fi is just a bonus. ;)

Be sure to update IOS5.. the first issue is a battery eater.

Yes, OS upgrade is an absolute must.
We bought an Ipad when they first came out and I have to say it's a marvel. Just a giant Ipod really but it's very helpful with young children in the house learning to read and write.

I can counter all of your Apple groveling with one word: iTunes.
They can make as revolutionary a device as they want but as long as I am required to install and use a program as intrusive as itunes I will not own it.

I couldn't agree more. iTunes is great for Macs but absolutely HORRIBLE for PC's. Just ask Skuzzy!
Personally I have nothing against Apple's products. They all seem to be (for the most part) well built and work as intended. And you have to tip your hat to Apple as a company (RIP Steve) as their marketing machine is nothing short of incredible. My problem is with most Apple owners.
I know there are exceptions to every rule but Apple "fanboys" seem to have it engraved into their heads that nothing else exists. Period. No matter what nothing will ever be as good as Apple products and they will badmouth other products without even ever bothering to try them out! Also cost doesn't seem to be a factor in their equations. Apple products in their minds are well worth the added expense, and you have to pay money for good quality - even if you're paying extra for more than you'll ever truly need! It's all rather silly if you ask me.
Take my situation for example. Now I'll admit that I'm a bit of a cheapskate but still - I have no use whatsoever for an iPod or an iPhone. My cellphone needs are rather light and I like to tinker on top of that! I make very few phone calls. I text more but still nothing excessive. I like to have data available for basic "time killing" tasks but all in all my phone is not my main connection to the internet. I paid $120 for my Virgin Mobile cell phone (LG Optimus V Droid) and I pay $35/month for unlimited 3G data, unlimited texts, and 300 voice minutes per month without a contract. On top of all that this phone does everything I'd ever want it to (and more) and I've even hacked into it, installing a custom operating system that I have a lot of fun with! That's a GREAT DEAL if you ask me! (For the record Target will be selling these phones for $50 on Black Friday)
My uncle on the other hand just HAD TO HAVE an iPhone. He paid several hundred dollars for the phone. He pays $90/month for his plan. Every time he wants to play on his phone he has to make sure he's on a wi-fi network as he doesn't have unlimited data. Just last week I went with my dad and him to take him to an doctor's appointment. His doctor had just moved to a new building and he had no idea where it was. His iPhone was rendered useless as I had to look up the address on my puny Droid. Then since he didn't pay extra for GPS on his plan while he was digging out his clunky old GPS unit from his glove box I loaded it on my phone in a fraction of the time! In the waiting room I played with his iPhone some and yes it was a bit faster.. and yes the screen was a tiny bit bigger and brighter (but to be fair I keep my brightness turned down low) but all in all it didn't really bring anything to the table that impressed me. Even touchpad precision was similar to my phone (but maybe not for some less expensive options). I could buy a bigger and faster droid phone and still come in WAY CHEAPER than the iPhone. But still he swears by it!
It's good fun to show off apps that I install that he can't because they aren't approved by apple's iStore. He defends his phone by claiming that since Apple controls what apps can be installed, that makes his phone safer!
On the other side of the fence I bought my sister a refurbished iPod touch from Apple's website about six months ago for her birthday. It was convenient because I had it shipped directly to her and she lives across the country. Her two small daughters (2 and 4) have pretty much taken control of the device and despite being used and abused by two small children nonstop it still functions like new. When she was visiting a few weeks ago I watched it get dropped about 30 times! It is well built I'll give it that!
My girlfriend works with a woman who complains all of the time because they struggle to make ends meet every month - like many families these days. She has three kids and her husband is starting to get his business off of the ground and they are dead broke as a result. She actually told my girlfriend that Santa won't be able to visit the kids this year because her and her husband just HAVE TO HAVE the new iPhone 4S. Keep in mind they both have the iPhone 3 now! This is the kind of mentality I'm talking about!
I firmly believe that price should be a factor with any purchase. It just doesn't make sense to me to buy a several hundred dollar device if you don't need it!

I didn't rad all the rest but I accidentally installed iTunes once when I instilled Quicktime. Oh sweet jesus could that suck up memory and slow my computer down.

Always hated that Apple wanted to manage all my music. What's so difficult about having an MP3 folder in the first place that you need an application to manage it for you?
There is a way around it. First thing to do in iTunes is to turn on manual mode, and never rip in iTunes. Then all you need iTunes for is to add and remove data from the player.
Shut off all Apple processes in Startup too. If you need to manage the player it's easy enough to start Bonjour manually.
Tried a few third party apps to try and replace iTunes for accessing the player; never could find one that worked reliably.
Their MP3 players are OK, although I liked the Zen better for real OTG playlists. And the old iRiver was just a USB device - no software needed. Now that is good, clean design.

When I was growing up and computers were just coming out, the commodor 64, I told a friend of mine that computers were never going to be anything more than a game, never do anything with them. What an prettythang I feel like now. My desktop is windows, but I do have both iPod touch, and an iPad, since I have gotten my iPad I haven't used my desktop for anything more than gaming. I can do just about everything I need to on my iPad. I have an HP laptop that is top o the line, don't use it, all I need is my iPad. And it surfs porn just great. :D

I personally stay away from apple but my wife and daughter both have touch ipods. My Daughter also has an ipad.
I do read up on most electronics though.

Must agree with this, my wifes Iphone was always using charge way to fast until I updated it to IOS5 for her.
