Make a very lucky tater shot last night. Got a big salute form the opposing pilot. In the after discussion on 200 I recounted the luckiest shot I ever made. It happened like this about 2 years ago.....
I was in the first 6 months of playing AH and I was in a P-39. A 262 dove in on my six and fired at me. I banked hard left and he missed, then I swung it back right and tried to shoot him on the extend. I fired about 15 37mm rounds, all of which missed and his Icon read 1000+. Three zero and pulling away in a slight climb. I lined up the retical and fired one more desperation-frustration 37mm shot. A moment later there was a big flash, and the 262 exploded.
Turns out it was Grizz. He explained that he was trying to get 100 kills on a single sortie and was up to 40 when I got him. He asked me if it that was a 37mm from 1K. I told him yes, but lamented I didn't have it on film. I asked him if he'd send me the film. He replied....
"No!"
He would have a better chance of getting hit by a bolt of lighting, In AcesHigh, than ever getting hit by that shot again. Very lucky indeed.
Now when I recounted it last night, Sunsfan replied "Nice story bud."
Hmmm, was he implying I made that story up? I suddenly flet like a big fat liar telling a fish story. :o
So Grizz if your out there and want to help out, perhaps you could confirm? or finally post that film? ;) :aok :salute

It happens. I think he actually meant.... good story. Nothing false or anything.

He probably did. This post is meant to be friendly poking fun all around. :aok

I've plugged planes on their overshoot with my 37mm... lol great fun.
-
Frustration shots are funny as heck when they work. I remember one night I was in a P51 getting BnZed by a guy in a P51 with a ton of smash. On his third pass or so, I pulled nearly straight vertical under him, at which point he was 800 away, and let loose with a half second burst in his general direction.
Sparks aplenty on his plane, kill message immediately follows, immediate nearly-snarly question of how the hell I did that from half a mile out. All I could reply with was 'dumb luck'.
Wiley.

A 37mm shot from 3k out? I call BS, why would you even squeeze the trigger that far out? Film or it didn't happen.

So fake... I blame Will Ferrell's swearing toddler video for these kind of spinoffs. They annoy me more than entertain.

Read again. Icon turned from 1000 to 1.0 and he was speeding away at 300mph +... Not 3K+.
-
Vinkman should have bought a lottery ticket that day.
-
:o thx Krusty. I can believe 1000+ out. Sorry for the poor reading comprehension guys

I think the OP meant "three zero(s)", as in 1000, not three-zero=30=3.0.
Typos happen.
-
That's a hell of a shot, with the crappy ballistics of the P-39. I killed an La-7 from 1.5 out with a desperation shot, but that was a laser beam from a Yak-9T.

You know, that makes a bit more sense. I thought he meant 300mph lol!

i thought he was talking about 3 fighters Zeros a6m's

DAMN YOU FireDragon!!!!!!!!!!
I spent fifteen minutes stuck in a loop reading your avatar!!!!!! if my cat hadn't been hungry and swatted me i could have been trapped there for days!!!!!! maybe longer!!!!!!!

I was in a B-17 the other day and a Yak fired a 37mm from 3.0K away and killed my tail gunner. Before that happened I woulda never thought that a 37mm round would reach that far.

It doesn't.
-
Can you explain how the tail gunner got killed? He was firing from 3.0k and I'm thinkin' "ya , go ahead, waste that ammo". Then bam, my tail gunner is dead.
-
Lag? Are you sure there wasn't another plane? Film?
Could've been manned gun ack, which goes out to 4K IIRC.
Otherwise, there's no way a Yak-9T can reach out that far.
1.5K is where bullets disappears on airplanes.
Only exception is the B25H.
-
It was more like 600 yds.
-
I got killed by a guy that wasnt even shooting in my direction. will try to dig up the film, I know i got it somewhere.

Which would back his story up, you saw 600ish, he saw 1k-ish. Lag makes lucky shots all the more amazing sometimes

that would be joeblack most likely :D
I know you don't believe in the effects of lag on AH and all, but it doesn't matter what "you" see as far as tracers or your enemy's orientation, if he sees rounds hit, you take damage. Even if on your screen, he is facing the opposite direction of you, if his computer sees him having a solution, he has one.

Had this happening to me earlier with 4Fox. In my ride he had no shot but was hitting me while his nose was well away from having an angle.

try a knife fight with joeblack

try a knife fight with joeblack
"Now you see him... now you don't" :lol
-
I can confirm that this happened. I was online with Grizz at the time. I figured he'd whine about it. He just said, "Oh well, that sucks" or something along those lines...
-

Ain't that the truth. I saw him warp so bad onetime he actually changed countries...

I was at 18k and there were no other aircraft around. I wish I had been rolling film but was not. Manned ack is 37mm IIRC.

It was more like 600 yds.
Lol this is me just messing with vinkman
In all honesty it was between 1050 and 1100 yds on my end. It happened just as vinkman described it.
Vinkman if you can check PMs or if you remember what date it happened I can check to see if I saved the film and will post it.
-
I thought we were confirming something else about Grizz.
-
It doesn't.
yes it does. the 37mm has a very long range actually. hence the reason 37mm AA guns on the bases can reach and kill planes at 10,000ft in the vertical. 40mm's can reach even farther ive layed down fire from quad 40s on CVs out to kill planes at 5-6k while theyre dogfighting over beachheads. theyre more of the spray and pray shots with the quads but shoot enough down range it'll hit something

Yes, the 37MM on field guns can go out far. But not on the Yak-T. They disappear like any other airplane guns at around 1.5K.

LMAO!! funniest one liner of the year. :rofl

Thanks for the confirmation. :salute
I thought we shared PMs from the boards, but I have nothing in the inbox. Perhaps we just PM'd in the arena. :frown: Not sure I can remember the date within several months. Started playing in May of 09, it was at least 6 months in but not later than a year. If you're looking, my best guess is dec 1, 09-feb 1, '10 But I realize that must be a ton of film for you. I think we exchanged some board post around that time too. I'll try to find 'em

I have my head position set so I can hit the target dead center at 1700 yards in the yak9t.

Id bet money he was on a satilite connection.. Ive seen this from a couple people. Not possible to judge correctly if they have a shot or not till they start tinking you with their nose lagging 20degs behind..
-
I tried the same maneuver in a jeep once when he dove on me in his 262. Even in the thin air of the high mountains I was not as lucky as you were.
-
I rammed you only on your front end with my 500mph jet and watched your jeep roll down the mountain. That's my rotten toon fantasy.
-
Yes, the 37MM on field guns can go out far. But not on the Yak-T. They disappear like any other airplane guns at around 1.5K.
The field guns are their own modelling. Just because it shares a caliber doesn't make them the same gun, so the Yak has a totally different round.
Although I think it goes out further than the 20mm/30mm rounds. Due to their nature, some rounds have a longer "lifespan" or duration in which they fly forward. I think this includes all rounds of 37mm or higher caliber. The distance the round can fly will also change depending on the air density. Firing on the deck makes it slow down all that much faster. Firing at 15k or even 20k makes it go a lot longer. Aiming is still a problem, but I sat behind some higher-alt B-17Gs in a Yak9T once and plinked them from over 1.5K (closer to 2.0, but not quite there). I pinged the lead about 4 times, but due to dispersion and distance and guess work none landed in the same place. I never got a critical hit. Now, I was smart enough to know this was due to the high alt. I could never have done it lower down. The guy I was shooting wasn't smart enough to know if I can hit HIM, then HE could hit ME... so he never fired back lol.
:devil

Grizz I can't find a date. I appreciate the offer to post it :aok but digging through dated film files would take a lot of time.
Keep it in mind, and if you come across it, maybe you can post it then. :salute

Rolled but not on its wheels. More like thump thump... thumpity thump.

Slash, i don't know which thought is sadder.....that i had the same twisted thought you had when you read that, thus showing that we are both despicable low browed human-beings.........or that out of the two of us "I" of all people had the self restraint required not to comment on it and throw a poke into Grizzipoooooohhhhhh and you completely UBER FAILED, thus showing that of the two of us......I AM THE BETTER MAN!!!!!!!!!
by the way killing yourself in shameful desperation is not an option, i need to know there is one person out there in the world who is more pathetic than i am!!!!
-
Couldn't find, it must have been deleted by accident. :/ I might have rage deleted it right off the bat tbh, I can't remember.
Slash...

I just got that. :rofl
walked into that one.

Oh? You were there, right? Calling someone I liar when you don't have ANY evidence in a friendly chat is cowardly at best. :ahand

Chill dude, it's common sense. He was thinking 3K distance. You'd no sooner believe a guy got a 3K kill with .50cals, right?
We've shown he simply misread the post, that it wasn't a 3K shot.
-
My Bad. I hate the liar thing...the world is full of opinions and few prove anyone a liar. ...just sayin' :old:
-
no man I wasn't saying you were lying. First thing came to my mind was lag. I orginally thought you said you hit a 262 going 3 or 400 mph from a distance of 3 thousand yds. with a 37mm round. :salute
