Post by: Tank-Ace on November 23, 2011, 11:21:16 PM
Not sure where to put this, but figured the Aircraft and Vehciles was most relevent.

Well I just finished reading Zaloga's Armored Thunderbolt, and I'm looking for some new reference/light reading matierial. Any suggestions?

The best source for (free) reference material relative to US armored action in WWII is located on an Army server.

Here's a link to WWII reference documents, including studies and after action reports.

Here's a link to the general server, with many other categories of material. This is an invaluable website, bookmark it. Everything is PDF format and you can download all of it and build your own library. There are also Army Air Corps documents in this library, and some Naval documents as well. It's a true treasure trove for those who want read casually or do a serious study.

One of the best series of reports is that accounting the Battle of St.Vith, during the early days of the German Bulge offensive.

Have fun!

I'm currently reading "Fire In The Sky: The Air War In The South Pacific" by Eric Bergerud, pretty interesting read so far, although
things get repeated once or twice, you get a better understanding of the War in the Pacific.

I recommend this before Touched with Fire (ground war in the pacific)

I really have a unique and new understanding of what the troops went through especially pilots (who he routinely interviews)

Thanks for the link Widewing, time to do a little digging. :)

Butcher, that is a great book the challenges the theater of operations presented were pretty unique.  These are further highlighted in Touched with Fire, I've also read the Ghost Mountain Boys by James Campbell.  Members of the 32nd Guards Division were tasked with hiking 130 miles over the Owen Stanley mountains during the battle for Buna.  They weren't properly trained or equipped for either the terrain, or what the Japanese had in store for them when they reached the east coast of New Guinea.

Thanks widewing and Butcher.

BTW, I've been thinking about reading Touched with Fire, but if you think I should read Fire in the Sky first, then I  might reconsider  :aok.

One of the interesting parts of that report is the detailing of the M8 killing a Tiger tank in an ambush.

Are you wanting armor specific?  German armor?  General WW2?

armor by choice, preferably German armor, but soviet is fine too. Not that I'll turn down a good book about aircraft.

Back in 2005 I had a chance to visit Normandy with some old Airwarrior types.  We had about a week in a rented place near Cauvicourt France, less then a mile from where Michael Wittmann was killed in his Tiger I by a Firefly gunner.  Needless to say being in such a historic area made for a need to learn more about it.

So my shelf has the following on it that are all good books on the battle in Normandy to Falaise Gap.

"Sons of the Reich-II SS Panzer Corps"  by Michael Reynolds
"Steel Inferno-1 SS Panzer Corps in Normandy" by Michael Reynolds
"A Fine Night for Tanks-The Road to Falaise" by Ken Tout
"The Bloody Battle for Tilly-Normandy 1944" by Ken Tout
"Tiger Ace-The Life Story of Panzer Commander Michael Wittmann" by Gary L Simpson
"Michael Wittmann and the Waffen SS Tiger Commanders of the Leibstandarte in WW2 Volume II" by Patrick Agte  (Covers the Normandy time and beyond)
"No Holding Back-Operation Totalize, Normandy August 1944" by Brian Reid

All these covered the actions near where we stayed and we were able to find spots mentioned along with the occasional Sherman tank, and the only Tiger I still sitting in France where it died in the Gap.  It was amazing stuff and any one of these books would keep ya busy :)

If not that, then Panzer Colors volume I, II, III would do the trick too :)
