Title: VIDEOCARD
Post by: olds442 on December 03, 2011, 11:01:37 AM
hello, i have a HD radon 5670 vid card in my system. i was running max textures today and got a solid 30 FR but when i look down at seat it drops to around 20 FR. so i started over clocking and max it out at 850 mhz and 1050 memory clock. i went back in game. i got around 40 FR when in cockpit and solid 60 when in f3 but agian when i look down at the seat it drops to low 20s. and when i remove "shadows on others" and "smooth shadows" i get back to soild 60-59 FR even when looking down at seat. any advice? i would lvoe to run max textures in aces high with a hi 50 FR even when looking at gauges/ seat.

other info: i can play call of duty black ops with a soild 60 FR on max textures and i can play battlefeild bad company 2 with high 50 frame rate on max settings. also i have a AMD CPU and it uses only two cores when in aces high even tho its quad core all AMD CPU's do this i belive. i got a 500 watt PSU.

Smooth shadows especially is gpu intensive, not sure on shadows on others. Tweak your settings to give you the best frame rate you can get (you might be limited to 60fps by your monitor refresh rate). Or you could just stop looking down in the cockpit  :D

The "shadow on others" options makes my 5830 take a huge dump.  I can run up to 2048 shadow textures (with smooth shadows) just fine but 4096 or higher also makes it take a huge dump.  Personally I find the shadows in AH to be a bit annoying so I just leave them turned off anyway.

The 5670 isn't the best card out there so trying to run shadows at all is in my opinion a bit much let alone trying to run them at full textures.  This requires a LOT of memory.  My advice?  Just don't run shadows in AH.

You tend to forget that AH is a LOT more CPU intensive than BF2 and COD due to the 3D calculations involved.  Sure if everyone had a modern i7 system and a 6970 video card they could put some killer graphics in it as well but since many (if not most) AH players are still using "dated" systems something has to suffer - either graphics or physics.  HTC (in making the correct choice in my opinion) opted to focus on more realistic physics than pretty 'eye candy'.  Simply put AH does a LOT more stuff in the background than BF2 and COD which is why you can't run your graphics settings nearly as high.

Just accept the fact that your 5670 card isn't the best card out there and leave shadows turned off and move on.

The AMD issue has been discussed here before.  There is a CTD bug in the processor and AMD fixes it by disabling cores under certain conditions.

I agree with Tigger this time. I can run shadows at full throttle and my system slows down to 58fps (a loss of 2fps with dual GTX 590s) but when I attack aircraft the shadows cause visual anomalies that make it difficult to discern what my target is doing so I turn shadows off.

Building shadows dont cause any issues as far as I have seen.
