Kind of a vague question pard.

Is there an ice dam on the north side? If so, there is a serious insulation/ventilation problem.

If it's merely a pile of snow, use an aluminum scoop (grain) shovel. Be careful of the shingles and gutters (gutters should be cleaned or removed by now). Make sure there is no expensive shrubbery below.

Heat wraps are no match for mother nature.

A healthy layer of snow on top of a well built roof is only added insulation.

 :salute

EDIT: For crying out loud, never use salt on anything except sidewalks.

Depending on how heavy the snow is, you can use a sturdy push broom to remove the snow. Then at most wait an additional day to let the sun do it's work.

Agree with not putting salt on roof too.

You will have a tough time finding an heating method that will be strong enough to remove the snow without damaging the shakes though. The snow melt systems that are out there only do any good when the snow is falling and building somewhat slowly, not when it is already built up.

Good luck though, I too am dealing with falling behind on work due to weather.

Critical questions...

A) Where do you live.

B) How much snow/ice are we dealing with.

C) What type of roof is it? (Wood shingle/shake, asphalt shingle/shangle, rolled roof, steel, southern varieties)

D) Pitch of roof ( <S> Zoom )

http://www.heatersplus.com/roofs.html  (not sure if these work on shake roofs, heat and wood are a bad combo imho.)

I see a hundred ice dam claims every winter (Large loss property adjuster), Ive never seen one at a home that has the wire heaters at the roof edge and gutter line. Ice dams can be a really big deal and cause thousands in damages.

One other thing that helps, and im not sure if his roof has it, is ice and water sheild. Its usually installed 3 to 6 foot up from the gutter line underneath the shingles, shakes etc. Many northern and or snow prone regions now has it in the bldg code that it must be added.

Shake roofs are alot of fun to install, Ive done a few in my day, its really a dying art.

I was going to recommend a snow rake, but some putz posted it before I could.   :furious

Unless the roof is leaking, just leave the snow alone if it's really just an inch or 2.

LOL he's trying to finish a job so he can get paid. This is not a homeowner concerned about damage to his roof. Check back through the posts.

hmmmm i was under the impression that they are removing the old shakes and needed the snow off in a hurry so they could finish the job, if that was the case then the rock salt would not hurt the under laying roof structure, it might leave a residue on the shakes that are going to be torn off, maybe some on the under lament but that's always replaced when the new roofing system is put on, but to put rock salt on a newer roof just to melt the snow i would agree the with rest.  depending on your area's snow load usually determines the roof pitch and material used for the roof.

He never really did say what the job was just that the snow was in they way.

Depending on the amount of snow, there would be no need to remove the snow if the shakes still need to be removed. The snow will come off when you take the shakes off, was the way I looked at that. I was actually thinking there was some other job he had to do on the roof and was just looking for a safe manner to remove the snow without damaging the shakes.

I've installed the v cables before and they work pretty good. The secret is to also run them through the gutter and the down spout.

get a 20 gauge shotgun with target loads and get a good angle. blast the snow away. (only if you have hard tile roofing)

I just did a Mansord Roof not long ago with shakes. It was anything but fun. Of course the house is not in prime location either.

3-4 bucks high on scaffold and extremely uneven terrain. All that and my only partner was a 63 year old man.
