Tonight I was flying a spit over an airbase. I was about 7.5K above the ground and flew level over the town at about 410mph and one hit from the ack took a wing off. I can't remember the last time I flew near ack and didn't get a 1 ping death. Really puts a damper on the flight part of the game and is what keeps me in GV's. Anyone else experience this kind of crap with planes?

don't fly in ack.... there problem solved

you probably got nailed right in the kisser by one of the auto 37mm's. those things are mean sonsofmotherducks.
-
The square pits in town are auto 37mm just like the manned soft guns. To the best of my knowledge :headscratch:.
They fire very slowly compared to a regular soft gun, that aside one ping from that & yeah your toast.

Spits=big wide wing easy to hit

Chaser this belongs in the training arena, but let me give you some advice, don't fly a spit period - don't fly over town ack / field ack or cv ack period.
Biggest thing to learn is not to whine after you break the above rules in which causes a whine on the BBS because you died for being an idiot for flying over the above ^ ack and die.
Ack is bad, AKAK is even worse, being the village idiot means you are a potato.

He said his WING came off, NOT instant tower. NOT only do you NOT play the game, you do NOT have basic reading comprehension skills..................
To the OP: Yea, it sux :airplane: :salute

Every now and then....... it happens to all of us. You don't have to fly ya know. You would of liked the Ltar squad. Hardcore GVers and damned good at it. Wonder what happened to them? My advise to you is just do what ya want and try to be good at it. I enjoy taking a plane with alot of rockets, like a P47 or 38 and hitting the town ack. To me, that's way more exciting then driving around trees in a truck. :joystick: Play your own game and everything will be good to go :salute

They wandered over to knight land...

Wow Chaser, you got killed by the ack once then came here?
I cant count how many times the first ping got me (radiator, wing, engine, pw, oil...) when was trying to kill huggies, even in the last couple weeks. Same with the first puffy pops at 3000.1 feet.
Damn annoying after a while tho, but still...
-
yesterday I was flying a TA152 at over 27k chasing something fast and high (probably a b-29) and was flying over an enemy CV when puffy ack light me up like a candle. . . lesson is - nothing, just dumb luck and you deal with it.

You should quit AH

So what you're saying is that you flew into "the stuff designed to shoot down planes" and that the "stuff designed to shoot down planes"
shot you down?
I agree, thats just unbelievable, this injustice must be stopped!

I think he forgot to add field elevation to maximum ack altitude at the field in question.

and the amount of alcohol them gunners been drinkin too

Entirely possibly, thats a good point.
Although I've noticed that complainers tend to exaggerate a bit, I would not be surprised if he posted the vid and he was flying at 5k at 300mph ;)

LOL!!! That's nothing. ACK is suppose to shoot you down. How about this story....
I was chasing a set of buffs at about 5K over OUR CV. In my first pass I lit one of the buffs engine on fire and as I climbed out an ACK burst popped in front of me and took out my engine. MY OWN ACK!
I got in another plane and went looking for another fight.
-
If it were auto-puffy ack, I could see your complaint. But flying near a town or field and getting shot down is your own fault.
ACK is supposed to shoot you down
Stop cherry picking and ack will never touch you. :aok

:huh
-
Rule of thumb: Be at least 8K over base level (if the base is 4K base, then you need to be at least 12K) and you should be safe from the majority of autoack. The slow shooters might get a round or two up to you, and there might be someone in a manned gun who could still reach out and touch you... but that's the best advice I have.

The OP said he was flying over an airbase at 7k in a Spitfire. Does that not sound like someone waiting to cherry pick some hapless sucker willing to try and lift from the field?

I can cherry pick all day without ever getting near any ack or even a base...

I'm sure you do, but hovering over a field looking to pounce on someone who just cleared the field is a cherry pick in my book. It is a vulch when they are on the runway or landing/taking off. A "pick" as commonly used, is when you take out an opponent fighting with one of your friendlies.
Call it what you will.
-
I call it being an ambush predator. It's why I love maps with good GV spawns and lots of hills... you can hide your plane, be low enough to not show dar but still have a bit of alt to look down on the field and hopefully attract jabbos up to bomb what they think are GV's attacking. Then flying down the side of the hill, or around the corner and timing a pass to hit em from the side when they're not looking is the best.
-
I'm a little curious if anyone read more than 1 sentence of my post. So far only 2 or 3 people have actually understood what I posted. Try again guys.
-
I have similar stories with CV ack while I'm at 50k feet or so. Seriously though, not even in visual range and first puff takes out oil. This has happened half a dozen times in last 2 months. Now I just stay away from CVs.

Chaser, without exception, I suspect everyone in game has had that happen at some time or other - I certainly have. The best advice I can give you, if you want to fly a plane, is get with a trainer - they are freely available, work to get together with you when times coincide, and make the flying part much easier to a. understand, and b. be more enjoyable.
Yes, it sucks when you get hit by flak, but it happens, it happened in the war too. This game will give you many lumps and bumps, best plan is to learn from them and not make the same mistake again.
For the rest of you, quit giving him grief and try giving him advice to help him out - this is how people are driven away from the game, and how we lose potential pilots.

Very true, Chaser is not a pilot and more of a tanker, i've been slowly working with him on staying in the air for a tour and learning the basics of staying alive, he found that out on his first sortie the other day when he survived 15 angry bishops chasing us down.
He had no experience and survived his first real sortie, I just gotta work with him on staying alive and out of the spitfire.
-
ya just some tough luck we've all been there. I've got the 1 ping deaths too, everyone has. I gotten my own cv puffy ack to shoot me down too as everyone complains about. It just one of those things that happens, you can either go NW, W, SW, S, SE, E, NE, or N. Thats the only thing I do for the most part, your going to complain from time to time but don't let it overwhelm you, get upping.

You also forgot they are wooden. :ahand

If they were wooden they would be tougher. They are aluminum and very fragile.

Either way Spit wings are not the strongest.

it was a figure of speech...i know his wing came off, i clearly read it. if you could read tone on this forum, then you would have gotten it. you obviously do NOT have any idea how stupid that remark was.

Someone is a nitpicker. ;)

The faster you go, the more likely you are to get hit
I made a 400+ mph dive through the old vh base with only 2 auto acks and 1 manned ack before and took an engine hit and pilot wound...
Soon after, witnessed a guy glide dead stick doing about 100mph through from one end of a large airfield to the other at an alt of 1k. I just sat on the runway like a deer in the headlights waiting to see what would happen as he got closer and closer until he was able to launch a tater at me before finally being taken down by the ack.
-
Ack only fires at cons within 6K of field, no? So getting hit at 7.5 pretty good trick.

just below 8k will set the auto ack off.

Either way Spit wings are not the strongest.
Wooden winged aircraft in AH, so far as I know, are:
La-5FN
Mosquito Mk VI
Mosquito Mk XVI
Yak-9T
Yak-9U
La-7 might, but I recall reading that by the time the La-7 came around the wings were being made of aluminum.

i would think that your harder to hit the faster your going, when your going slower you give the ack more time to aim.
BTW, there are no "wooden" or "metal" planes in the GAME. I will let you all figure it out yourselves.

Ah, thanks.

If ack is your major frustration with Aces High, you're well behind the curve.
-

What an intelligent solution!
-
Aces High lacks playability it takes to long to get to the good part and there are too many things that can and do go wrong while trying to get to the good part of the game, the longer you play the more irritating and predictable it becomes.
Its a stretch asking a gamer to fly 10-15 minutes to get to his action add in the quite common things that could ruin your day and its no surprise it gets old quick.

I had similiar incident happen to me as it did to Ruah. I was in a 152 chasing set of B17s roughly about 30K. I chased them down for about 6-8 sectors and I could tell they were heading to our HQ. I finally caught up with him and the puffy ack started popping all around us. Couple of guys in 163s showed up and I heard a ping, and heard of the friendlies say "You are on fire". I turned around and sure enough, I was trailing flames and pop, died. I was recording it and sure enough, one hit from "friendly" puff ack killed me. It is just one of those things that happens and leaves you :headscratch: your head.

Happens...... happened in real life too. Law of averages. Doesn't take away from the game in any case. :)
Just think though..... if you were playing on xbox you could just hit the code for unkillable. :D

I had my son and his buddy (big xbox live fans) watching me play AH the other night for about half an hour. Then my kids buddy says, "wow, that looks like a hard game to play". I looked at him and grinned.....i was playing offline at the time. :D

Funny I had one of my tenants watch me fly a little before an FSO (was in the training arena) and he was saying it looked to easy and not realistic to fly.
I gave him a spin in the TA and watched him crash over and over, needless to say I didn't have to say anything otherwise.

When firing 5" on CV at enemy con in close proximity to friendly..or even when friendly was close to line of fire to enemy con further out..the proximity fuse on AA round set it off hitting or killing friendly. Now I only do that when Butcher is the friendly.. :)
-
If that's all it takes to become frustrated with the game, it's time to step away to some other hobby & give AH a break. (I should be back early next year. ;))

3 more times tonight... All three times at the egde of the ack hieght and all three 1 ping and I lose a whole wing. Idk how people fly through it all the time when I can't even come close to it. I want to fight someone not fly for 20 minutes to have some idiot automated gun shoot me dow with 1 shot everytime.

Anyway. Back on topic.
Are you sure it's the auto-ack getting you and not a skilled shooter in a manned gun.
Many a time I've flown through the ack multiple times de-acking only to get whacked, going away, 2K off the base, by the final manned gun.

I guess it possible.. that would be a lot of lucky shots though. Every time I've been hit by ack some else has got what I've assumed to be the proxy and I've never PM'd them to see.
I think what gets me about this is it happens every time I get anywhere remotely close to ack. I can't make a single pass near it without getting 1 pinged by it. Just doesn't seem right to get get hit so consistently by it. I don't intentionally fly through the middle of it expecting to come out. It almost always happens when I'm hanging out high over a base and accidentally drift over the field while barely within ack range. I usually see 2 or three bullets fly by me and then the wing is gone. And for what's its worth I've lost the right wing every single time.

Don't fly over the field its suicide, fly the outskirts and you'll be fine.

Show the film. i want to see you fly.i'm thinkin u just dont know how to fly. this is what driving around in those trucks in the VH will do for ya. join a squad and follow them. Either that, or fly to 10000 feet and wait. We'll find you.

Last night I was killed by friendly puffy.
But I have no problems with that. That's what I got to follow an enemy bomber into my carrier's ack zone. I knew the risk, it was my choice. :airplane:

Spit would not be my first choice to de ack town. Love the 190d for that with plenty of cannons to take it down. Stay low on exit and manuver. Though I have been downed with one shot by town ack recently with no kill message just "you have crashed". Has HTC changed the damage level of wings lately? My Lanc stukas lose parts more rapidly now it seems. :noid
