Same thing happened in Parsippany NJ about 3-4 years ago.  Dolt claimed he was pointing it at the moon or such rubbish.
Last time I checked the moon didn't have anti-collision beacons, a rotor blade or say NJ State Police on it's side  :D

Its a pretty serious penalty if your cought lasing a aircraft in flight. Below is some examples, taken from wiki, but at least gives you a idea on what you can expect if anyone wants to try it.

In Utah it is a class C misdemeanor to point a laser pointer at a law enforcement officer and is an infraction to point a laser pointer at a moving vehicle.

In Arizona it is a Class 1 misdemeanor if a person "aims a laser pointer at a police officer if the person intentionally or knowingly directs the beam of light from an operating laser pointer at another person and the person knows or reasonably should know that the other person is a police officer." (Arizona Revised Statutes §13-1213)

On April 30, 2010, Clint Jason Brenner, 36, of Prescott, AZ was found guilty of two counts of endangerment, each a class 6 felony, and it was also found that each was a dangerous offense, for shining a handheld laser pointer at an Arizona Department of Public Safety helicopter in December 2009. He was given a sentence of two years in prison for each count, to run concurrently

On November 2, 2009, Dana Christian Welch of Southern California was sentenced to 2.5 years in a federal prison after being found guilty of shining a hand-held laser light into the eyes of two pilots landing Boeing jets at John Wayne Airport.

A couple of months ago a buddy of mine and I got lazed.  We were cruising at about 2500 over town, all of a sudden the inside of the plane turns green.  We were both on the intercom going WTF, we looked out the left window and sure as he// some one had us lazed from a neighborhood.  We called the tower, the tower called PD and within a few moments they were on site, thru the tower the PD had asked us to stay in the area, we did and identified the house, the tower had given us permission to descend to 800 and when they got to the house that lazed us we turned off our lights, 3 cop cars reacted, and we went back to our home airport, about 10 a ten minute flight.  Once we got there we let the bird cool down and were sticking it back in the hangar when the PD showed up and asked us to fill out a report.  We did as asked and they said they already had the guy in custody.  I have never heard boo since but I suppose they didn't need my buddy or myself to go to court.  I never did find out what happened.

Spikes would be offended if you thought he lived on Long Island.  He is a country bumpkin.  Now Fungus lives on that dirty island.
