On a serious note, how do you fly an NDB on the north pole? I understand you can home into the NDB but how do you do everything else? On a basic aircraft with no modern avionics you would have a gyroscopic heading indicator which would still work but everynow and then it has to be adjusted to the compass and that does not work there.

Well the I'd image this is the true north pole, since the coordinates paint it as such. I think flying an NDB (or even finding precisely) the magnetic north pole could be quite frustrating and time consuming. I mean once your compass goes wonky unless you have a really current update on your GPS database of where it is it would be difficult.

I mean doesn't the compass not work around the area of the north pole in general, not just directly over it. Even the plate itself says the compass maybe be unreliable. So how are you going to get in there on instruments without a GPS?

I'm going to go ahead and assume this is why nobody has ever found Santa's workshop.
Anyone else find the holding pattern to be a bit odd? 180 true from the north pole is pretty much any direction you want, so there are an infinite number of holding patterns on this approach. Better be altitude deconflicted...

Well it does say "approach may intersect the runway at any angle", I assume it's the same with the holding pattern.

This approach plate is not real thus made in jest. However:
1.) There is RNAV. It says "Or GPS." Flying it in pink is legitimate. Probably preferred since firstly it's an NDB approach and who wants that? Secondly you'll have the lat/long of ELVES so you'll find yourself aligned with the runway.
2.) The needle will keep pointing at the NDB. You should be able to find it.
-in hypothetical land I'd suggest smashing your whisky compass as it doesn't matter. You have your ADF needle or RMI pointer. That's all you need.
3.) Slaved HSI/Heading Indicator. No input required other than making sure its slaved rather than free.
4.) Intangible benefit attributed to Rudolph to simply know where he's at while he's guiding the sleigh.
5.) Sleigh skids are actually direction find antennas.
6.) Your subscription apparently didn't show the 11-1 page. There's an ILS. Just fly that.
