Title: Aces High with Fraps 3.4.7
Post by: 11Kenzy on December 27, 2011, 06:32:11 AM
Hey guys,
I am planning to record my gameplay of Aces High with 100Coogn's mission "Endurance" with Fraps. Will it record with 60 FPS?

fraps records at a much lower fps depending on your computer.  but you wont be able to tell the difference.

there maybe stutters in the film depending on your system,  make sure you start fraps before you start ah.

Nothing wrong with 30fps, this is fraps @ 30fps: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VsUnNADVC90

Keep in mind even HDTV standards are at 24FPS so 30 is overkill as far as movies go...

The Hobbit is being filmed at 48 FPS because they found out that, gee, computer people are right, higher FPS looks better. (http://insidemovies.ew.com/2011/04/12/the-hobbit-48-frames-peter-jackson)

So Frapsing at 30fps is fine.  A demonstration of the difference: http://www.boallen.com/fps-compare.html

But can you tell the difference in an actual Aces High video?

15 FPS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-vTioD9Ejw
30 FPS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9pyp_U6r3yw

The main difference is video quality vs. file size (or in the case of YouTube, how long it takes people to download the stream).  If you want to reduce file size, I would rather lower FPS to as low as 15 before lowering most other video quality settings.  Also if you Fraps in film viewer at half-speed with the intention of doubling it back again in your video editing software, it makes sense to Fraps at half the intended final FPS.

Actually the USAF did a study way back in the 70's (I think) about visual perception, perception of motion kicks in around 17fps and perception of frames stops at around 115fps.

Those studies were most likely on 60 ISO film, which blurs and streaks, and when played forward captures motion a lot more reliably and smoothly (and note the playback is constant, not halting or stuttering, so it is easier to gloss things over when you don't notice it change).

Computer monitors and PC gaming is an entirely different ball of wax (if I may mix my metaphors).

By the way, will it record at 30 fps under these settings:
1GB RAM
Aces High gameplay set at 1280x800 (my maximum laptop resolution)
Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit wither Service Pack 2
